Today's flea finds (Lugz 2020_25) are in the strange/interesting category.

Pic 1

An antique era swiveling screwdriver. The unused end swings inside the handle and you tighten into position with the wingnut. Both ends are broken, but one was a slot tip and the other I can't tell. Older than Phillips or any other cross-recess tip, I think. Maybe just a chisel or awl. I don't know.

I think the other thing is a mechanics' stethoscope, but I am just guessing. The tip is just a fine point. It extends through the rubber body and terminates into a sort of simple resonator inside the softer green rubber earpiece.

You guys will remember the Coronet B photographer's light meter I found in a toolbox last week. Look to the left of the tray in Pic 2. Another one. Different brand. But still. In a toolbox. Is there some old mechanics' trick with a photographers' light meter we are missing here? Testing sealed beam headlamp bulb strength? Or just a very strange koinkydink?

I towed a robins egg blue Datsun 2000 from Runemede, NJ to Palmerton, PA with a rope - I sh*t you not, in 1976. When I left for boot camp in 1982 I sold it to my girlfriend for $1 so she could legally transfer the paperwork to her name. We broke up 2 years later. She kept the car. Ranks maybe #3 or maybe #4 on my Top 10 youthful boneheaded decisions.

Yep, a robins egg blue '68 2000. 5-speed, dual carbs, and I sold it to pay for a trip hitchhiking around England and Ireland in '89. Not quite as boneheaded as selling my Yamaha SRX600 after my divorce...

Here's a quick Garage Sale Thread Time-Delayed Cause-and-Effect Story, in two panels...

Some of you may remember the vintage bocce balls I found and reported here last June (hey, they're stored in the garage, so it counts...), post linked here. See Pic 1.

I had to do something with them - so I finally put in a bocce court! Adjacent to the ping pong table. A little shorter than I would've liked at 36', but the CINCHOUSE wouldn't let me go full yard. See Pic 2.

That is some serious yard commitment! Looks great!!

Those Hudson Bay hatchets look old, especially with those unshaped handles. I'll be curious to see any markings once you get them de-rusted. Good finds.

Is the “n” just a formatting typo artifact from selecting and italicizing “[sic]”?
Or is that the sound-effect for X-men’s Wolverine/Logan extending his claws - “SNIK”? As in, “HYBRAND!!!” (SNIK) “More on this later, Bub!
Haha! But neither. It was my bad attempt at a neologism for the erroneous but common misreading of 'sic' = 'spelling incorrect' as 'spelling not incorrect' (I know, it's actually the 'sic' from the Latin 'sic erat scriptum'), so, didn't make much sense. :)

That is some serious yard commitment!
Thanks. I hope the next owners like ping pong and bocce!

Agreed. I don’t know much about them but that type feels good in the hand. My brother has a modern reproduction so I would imagine the actual old version is even better

Boring yard sale day. $10 assortment.

That doesn’t look boring. I see snap on, proto and even dual marked plomb. I wish I was at a boring yard sale right now. I am jonesing so bad for any type of sale! The last swap meet or sale I went to was in November of 2019 [emoji15] I still make the usual eBay purchase but that is not the same

I’ve seen a few of those in single ended, folding up to be pocket safe. Never a double. Need to poke around a bit.

It's marked. I just disassembled and cleaned it, and found markings under the grime inside the handle and a patent date on the slot screwdriver. I'm going to post more photos and the information in an appropriate thread later. Just trying to save you some time. Thanks.

RTM, Anyone else interested,
I started a thread on that rotating screwdriver - called the "Jiffy" and dating to 1918. Linked here.

Picked up a set of Wright Grips off of eBay for $65. Not pennies, but I felt that it was a decent deal. What wasn't a decent was that the denim roll got dropped in oil and left there for a while. A greasy, oily mess, ugh.

Also nice of him to grind the engraved initials off, probably be better if he left them there, alas.

Here's my submission for the week. $8 for the lot.

A set of 1/2dr 12pt Indestro sockets from 1/2" to 1-1/8" missing the 1-1/16"
Indestro 3217 Universal
Indestro 3206 Sliding 'T'
Indestro 1/2" Hex Ell with script logo
Proto 9686 #3 Plillips
Ford open end wrench Forged 'M' on reverse. (5/8 & 9/16)
1ea Penens, STW & ChromeXQuality sockets.
--I've never heard of STW. Can anyone school me??

The group shots of the sockets are before and after a few hours in vinegar and a dose of Blue Magic.

The sockets appear not to be of a set. Most are Indestro Super but the smallest, largest and one other are Indestro, while the 1" is DI--which also seems to have thinner chrome--war time?

Climatecreator, you will love those Kant-twist clamps!

I do indeed. I have two smaller ones and when I saw those I had to grab them.

Nice finds. I am keeping an eye out for some hatchets like you found. I know they are out there :)

Thanks, yeah I see hatchets quite a bit here in New England, my favorite is with hammer head and round cheeks usually used for shingling.

Those Hudson Bay hatchets look old, especially with those unshaped handles. I'll be curious to see any markings once you get them de-rusted. Good finds.

Only marks I saw.....

Some Habitat finds this week.

The no name adjustable was found in the road yesterday.

An S-K Wayne lug wrench
P&C 1/8” screwdriver
old Herbrand offset spark plug wrench
wood gouge, can’t read the mfr.
Buck Brothers chisel
two Bonney offset wrenches X 1730, can’t remember their use
Mustang 5/16” 8 point socket. I was tired of looking at it on their shelf!

Wow, my Wayne four way has a cousin on the opposite side of the country!
There was one sale in the Tahoe basin that mentioned tools and I came home with these socket racks and a few sockets. The last shot is the Taiwanium discards.

Nice, I like the bocce court. That's a fun summer game. I've taken my set to quite a few parties and gatherings.
One of those old world, seemingly simple, but deceptively complex fun games. One roll, a few caroms, and what looked like 3 sure points for you is suddenly 1 point for your opponent. My last two eggs in the nest (17, 21) were ho hum about it until they started playing. My 26, not at home, frequent visitor, is a serious sand table addict. (Like shuffleboard, but raised up on a table if you're not familiar. Every old, good tavern around here has one.) So he loves it now, too. I am more of a straight, tactical thrower. 17 is really good at side spin action to get around blocks. But he lofts super high. So I've been raking and tamping divots every morning. Haha. You don't that problem on grass, but unless you've got Wimbledon level greenskeeping, crushed oyster shell or stone dust makes for a nice true roll.

old Herbrand offset spark plug wrench
Yeah it is. Old, I mean. Fin de siecle through WWI. Nice find.

Lugz-- I found the same set last year, including the chaser--but not the cool carrier. We play with our neighbors on the weedy lot between our homes. The weed clumps adding an additional obstacle set to the game... We talked about raking out a court and since he recently purchased the lot we might have to revisit. Although plans to seed the lot with Bluebonnets might take priority.

So we hit some Garage and Estate Sales today.

One tool guy had lots of stuff but all of them items I already had multiples of and didn't see a need for more.

The last sale was a couple getting ready to downsize to Florida. He had a Columbian D5 D56 vise on his bench marked for $25.

I have a chinese Wilton on my inside bench and a MONSTER Columbian awaiting a home, so the "already have enough rule" should have applied but it didn't.

I'm playing workbench Tetris here so the Wilton might go with the bench to a nephew and the new Colombian could end up on a "spare" workbench that's in the driveway right now.

I need to build a heavy bench for the MONSTER so that one continues to sit on the side like a shy teenager at the dance.

Cheers

Jim

I was back down at my parent's place in Culpepper, VA this past week, helping out with the "sonnie-do" list as my OSWMBO recovers from knee replacement surgery.

No more ravine excavations (I've mined that vein dry) but I did bring home a pair of Kenwood TK-88 receivers from my Dad's man cave that are older than I am. Now that Dad's passed, Mom keeps giving his stuff away to family friends who help out around the farm. I convinced her not to give away his stereo equipment, despite several visitors remarking how much they'd like to have it. I haven't plugged them in yet, but am hopeful at least one will fire right up.ca90b0b8b892568d304cc4df063a90f4.jpg

Plant the Bluebonnets around the court! [emoji38] I'm going to put a row of sunflowers in all down the length of that strip I left between the court and my fence.
Pocket post, sorry Lugz. But, since I'm here anyway, nice bocce court! When I was in Iraq in 2004, my Lt Col team lead built one in a palm-shaded corner of Camp Slayer near Baghdad International Airport. He had bocce balls shipped over, I think.

BB Are the Kenwoods solid state, or tube? If tube you DON'T want to just plug them in and see what happens. Old Tube gear has a "ramp up" process that can avoid catastrophic failure from aged parts. Let me know and I can get you more info.

Solid State can also benefit, and is a simpler process, but is less risky for just plug and play. Usually the switches and pots (Volume, tone, Balance controls) need cleaning and there are two different cleaners for those (pots need a "safer" one that switches) - If they sound scratch and scratchy when used, they need cleaning.

Scored a nice cracked Wilton at an estate sale today. The guy had lots of old stuff. Like 100+ year old stuff.

Thanks for the tip, Outlaw. I believe it is a tube-based receiver. I googled up this how-to for using a variac to start up old electronics. Is this what you mean?

Well, a few adds popped up and most had "Masks required" (probably prompted by the resurgence of verified C-19 cases) and last W/E I sorted out this "Safety First" process -

"Drive By" first:
  • is it crowded? is everyone actually wearing masks properly (I see dumkofs covering the mouth but not the nose WAY too much...)
  • is there anything worth getting out of the rig to see?
  • If all above is OK - Mask up and have gloves ready. Use "sterile" handling - Gloves for the items I touch - pull off glove to get my wallet if needed...
  • If a crowd comes in, back off and if necessary, leave.
  • If they refuse to mask up, leave immediately.

It seemed to work today, and EVERYONE was masked up today

4 stops where I got out of the rig, several I did not...

This was what I got: A couple of items (Like the Photo Album) just get set aside a week or so before handling with bare hands... (can't reasonably be cleaned)

Stop 1: A Taiwan knock off of the Coleman Stove/Cooler stand - this one has the angle cross bars so is actually the better version! $2:

Stop 2: Clamp city. I left most bu the (Jorgensen/Pony) deeps and the KantTwist I cherry picked. thes bring me up to 7 including the bench mount here. Also a wire "wheel" for a drill. $15 for these, but the KantTwist made it worth it)

Stop 3: $10 all!

An Adlake wickie lantern (less the burner and glass), but what is there is in great shape!, plus another Ammo box. - Ammo cans are a little like clamps, if cheap enough they come home. They stack well and are just handy...

A Coleman 220E - I usually pass on green 2 mantle lanterns, but it was cherry, had the globe, and (most of) the box, even the original "red tag" (in the box) Jan 56 date.

And lastly at stop 4 - An old photo album with the think cardboard pages with openings for the photos (self matting) - this for SWMBO's old pic collection; A ball pump (these can be converted to pump the old lanterns and stoves that have detached pumps), and a couple of wrenches (Herbrand and TBD post de-rusting) $3.50 all

Thanks for the tip, Outlaw. I believe it is a tube-based receiver. I googled up this how-to for using a variac to start up old electronics. Is this what you mean?

Yep, that is the basic process - Some will remove all tubes, test them first, and do some preliminary circuit tests before the full up Variac ramp up.

The idea is not to let a shorting capacitor blow up the transformers, which are unobtanium. Tubes, caps, and other passive parts are easy, not the transformers!

Plant the Bluebonnets around the court! I'm going to put a row of sunflowers in all down the length of that strip I left between the court and my fence.

The giant sunflowers are fun. One year I had a volunteer one grow at my place, damn squirrel planted it. It was 12ft tall and the flower/seed head was about 18in around!

Not much of a haul, but I got this nice little 12 oz. Fairmount ball pein hammer at a yard sale for $1.00 today. Also, a spray can of Gumout carburetor cleaner from the Free box at the end of the driveway. :)

Hmmm, might not be as old as I thought thought--no tubes. But pretty dusty inside. I have a variac on order to apply the start up protocol described above, after blowing it out with compressed air.d1f15a1bbb00b45607ec63485064887f.jpg
