Hoping for some "pre-sale" affirmation on this old Snap-On set. I need to act on a sight-unseen basis, and wondering what the experts here feel about a price around $125. The box looks great in the pics, and the ratchet is not a highly prized ratchet, but overall the finish appears as something in the "war era" specially intriguing to me is the ratchet adaptor. Welcome any and all comments. Despite my position as a buy/sell/trade guy, this would go as personal collection in my K-55-W tool chest.

War era would probably be right, I think the 125 is about right, not a great deal, but a good one.

Thanks, Mom & OTG! I'm going to go for it. Is it possible that the ratchet adaptor was part of a set? or a later add-in?

not part of the basic set, but this is like a build your own set, starts with a basic 1/2 set, but you can add other tools, the adaptor was in the 42 cats so it was added., even a 3/8 set can be added, has a tray you can use for 3/8 sockets/

Thanks again, snapmom. I only wish the ratchet was a 71-10 rather than the 71N. All in all though a tidy fit for my top chest and likely the start a rabbit hunt For more of that period to fill

What the heck is this? Its Blue Point, but I haven't been able to find one like it probably because I don't know how to look it up. Grateful for info...

Well I took my best shot, and brought this set home. Seems this has seen very little if any use in its 69 year (give or take) history. Virtually everything seems to be period, save for a Model 67B Chromed ratchet adaptor, a 8 point socket, and a Cornwell (marked USAC xxxx) 1/2" x 3/4" drive adaptor. Many of the sockets and the ratchet, K4 Speeder, the extensions, ratchet adaptor, drag link socket, and one of the 3 universals are a very chalky finish, and the rest of the sockets and two universals are more of a charcoal finish. Hard to make out the text on these sockets through the finish with my poor eyes, but the sockets mostly have a SW prefix, and are "coded" either E or G. The case is in terrific shape, feels like brand new inside. Seems this set enjoyed a nice dry heated environment for most its life. I'm happy to have come across it.

That is a nice grouping of tools. I would suggest giving the tools, particularly the ones with chalky finish, the regular precautions reserved for cleaning cad plated tools as some Snap-on wartime tools look to be cad plated.

Truthfully, d42jeep, I'm not sure what there is to clean at this point. The tools largely appear to be as close as to unused as I can imagine. Perhaps the PO used them, but took care to keep them in tip-top shape, as there is nary any grease/grime to be found in the tools, and definitely not in the interior of the box. There was a scrap of waxy paper from the period in there as well, (the kind new tools used to be wrapped in) and it was completely clean and dry as well. For now I've deposited them into my hermetically sealed, temperature and humidity controlled vault (read: basement with dehumidifier) for safe "as is" storage.

Found at the flea market today what is now my third pair of original Forged Steel Products pliers. Have to be older than 1932, when they became a Snap-on brand through a merger. These are water pump pliers No. 9-A. Very well made. The slip-joint pivot screw had to be tapped out and in with not some little force.

Have to say I am not sure I have ever seen a screwdriver tip end on a pair of waterpump pliers before. Combination slip-joints, of course. Especially pre-war. But waterpumps? No. My initial thoughts were mod. But the steel is not deformed.

Single row of suction cups, like the earliest pliers they made for Snap-on.

Almost seems like an injustice to FSP to keep posting them here, but we don't have an FSP thread.

Some of the water pumps had a gland nut with slots around it that you would turn by prying in the slot and against the housing. I suspect that the "screwdriver" was a prying tool for this type of nut.

I have one of those and use it to this day. Can't remember if I bought it in the 70's off the truck, or inherited it from my late father.
It's a fine tool, having the sliding sleeve to adjust the flexibility of the wires. Nowadays, it sees most of its duty on the underside of my Lawn Boy, where the flexibility makes it much more useful than a putty knife.

Blue Point Supreme S-1214 found at an estate sale. I believe the date code is 1952.

My son is going to University in Germany, and he remarked that at first he thought it was a DIN-spec wrench. It does follow the DIN pattern somewhat.

I also found a Blue Point OEX-120 at a garage sale last weekend.

Here is an early 1/2” drive socket I found at a tool sale yesterday. I’m a little puzzled by the date code.

I have seen it before, but 27 is 27, so never really thought about it other than maybe early 27..

Thanks for your responses, guys. Here is another oldie. The finish is kind of distressed but markings are visible. 1929?

Almost seems like an injustice to FSP to keep posting them here, but we don't have an FSP thread.

“Injustice” - what’s in a name?
If Earl W “Bill” Myers had thought the FSP moniker would have sold more tools than the SO one, he certainly could have arranged to rebrand. But the name recognition his debtors had built up was a significant portion of the value of the company he took over. Like Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha v Windsor, the acquired name better suited a marketing strategy.

The injustice I was only playfully referring to, LS, was in the implicit suppression of the origins and pre-Snap-on history of the pliers by having to post them on a Snap-on thread instead of a non-existent Forged Steel Products thread. Just paying tribute to their quality by suggesting, again, only playfully, that maybe they deserve their own thread.

But if you want to discuss branding, merchandising, and name recognition, it doesn't strike you as completely counterintuitive and ironic to your assertion that a company with supposedly inferior name recognition was bailing out a company with supposedly superior name recognition?

Snap-on was clearly not selling more tools than FSP at that time. They were in deep doo-doo debt. To FSP. A company doing so well with their own hand tools, that they made products, to include wrenches and punches and other tools, on the side for others. Except for socket wrenches. They weren't in that market. Also, note that FSP did not go away. It continued to function as its own OEM until 1951 or so, if I recall the date correctly, and Bill Myers still had a stake in it.

Yes, Bill Myers was bold enough to believe in Snap-on and their socket wrench drive tool market, however in financial dire straits it had been steered, and yet also savvy enough to continue to feature the Vacuum-Grip name much bigger and much more prominently on the pliers than the mfgrs's name.

In 1932, there was no data to suggest that Snap-on was not only going to recover but grow into the giant among mere mortals it has become. It was a risk move. The name recognition came later. Much later. If you want to credit him with having a 'crystal ball' for the name and market, I can agree with that.
