MrsLS&I got back to Jake’s flea today. $24 brought home an assortment of tools. IMO, the best deal was a tote full of rusty files for $1. The couple actual files are of little interest to me, as I have many, but I saw a LOT of rifflers hiding in the pile, and the one rasp is in great condition under the light rust. Some time with a wire brush will remedy that. Second favorite: Bonney 9/32dr socket set ES from 1930s, which I segregated from a Western Auto Chrome X Quality box.
Not in the picture are two Craftsman underline wood lathe tools, which complete a broken set.
The Chrome X Quality box looks similar to the one that came with my new 3/8” drive set. I picked it up from another collector. The kids and grandkids have been visiting so no sales in the wild for me recently.

Saturday I stopped at a garage sale in my home town. I got the items in the first photo for $3.25. It was getting warm and I think the lady just wanted the stuff gone so she could get out of the sun. Marked prices were much higher, and she was the one that suggested the new price.

Wire rack
3/8 hot rolled steel square bars
Prosnip 12" tin snips
Vi-Chrome USA 13030 DOE 15/16 x 1" (Made by Herbrand)
Proto Professional 9/32 combo
Blue Point OEX-120 3/8 combo
MAC CL162 1/2 combo
Craftsman =VV= DOE's 1/2 x 9/16 and 3/8 x 7/16
Brass measuring tool

I then went to an estate sale in a neighboring town. It was held in a building outside town that used to be a tile plant when I was young. Yes, that was a long time ago! They made red clay drain tile and also building tiles that were used like cinder block is today. It had been used for woodworking by the deceased. I only found two items, a Long-C Craftsman Sliding Bevel T and a Whitaker Special 5-1043 DBE 9/16 x 5/8 wrench. According to the Internet, the wrench is for battery terminals, and I notice a diamond forged in the shank that may be Williams. The "5" may be an "S".

At the estate sale there was an piece that interested me, but was way overpriced. It was a set of Baldor illuminated eye shields, but they were attached to a Taiwanese 8" grinder and the set was priced at $150.00. I should have shown them Dave FR's recent eye shield purchase, but I could tell that they were firm on the price.

Wow - I’d say they are brothers! Seven of the original 3/8dr sockets are in the box, but no drive tools. Are the sockets all 3/8dr, or is there an adapter down to 1/4dr? I have one 3/8dr D:I 7/16 and some 1/4dr D:I and Super Quality orphans.
That’s a nifty hinge handle - male at both ends. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered that smooth-handled ratchet. Have to keep an eye out, but I’ve got a couple branded pieces that can sub until such time.
Box has identical dimensions to a Super Quality box I also have. After a wipe-down with mineral spirits, it looks very good with some chips inside; outside paint loss on bottom and paint spatter on top.

They are all 3/8” drive. The ratchet is the same as an early non reversing Indestro. I have a few of the reversing models. The two ended breaker can serve as an extension by inserting one end into the ratchet. I haven’t found a catalog so I’m not sure what originally came in the set but it’s useable as is.

Just posted the last tool (punch) found on Friday on the Long C thread. For those who don't follow the vintage board threads, some after clean-up shots from that haul....

Thursday morning I attended an estate sale that looked promising in the local newspaper. There was a crowd, but I was able to find some good items for a total of $18.00.

Cheapo dent puller
Wesley's Bleche Wite tire cleaner (full)
a pressure gauge with T fitting
Cee Tee 6-1/2" Slip Joint pliers
Craftsman VV 3/8 dr 9/16 deep 12 pt. socket

??? used as a punch. Anyone know what it is?
2 wire wheels
Antique timing light
2 boxes of paper clips
Bridgeport 354 #4 Phillips screwdriver

Friday morning I stopped at a "Moving" sale in a nearby town. I bought the hammers in a lazy susan and two pair of wheel chocks for $7.00 as seen in photo #2.

I then proceeded to a sale out in the country and picked up the items in photo #3 for $17.00.

1/2 dr deep impact sockets, 7/16 to 1", missing the 9/16 but with an extra 3/4".
Dewalt bits in a case (I can use the case)

Craftsman combos 9MM-17MM

More to come.

You **** on that hammer lazy susan. It's really cool!!

Thanks, Don!
I didn’t notice the ratchets had removable drive plugs at first. Now I understand the 2-ended “flexible swing head handle“.
There really is an online Indestro catalog gap from 1935 to 1970! Seems like these WA sets are somewhere in the gap. Based on the 7706 set in the later catalog, I’m going to look to fill in the 1/2 & 3/4 sockets, at least.

Those tire pumps you screw into spark plug holes are informally known as chuffers, supposedly because that's the sound they make when they're in use.
Who knew car engines can be used as air compressors?

I have seen both Wisconsin VF-4 and Ford 302 engines that were converted to air compressors by using one bank of cylinders for power and the other bank to compress the air. Both of these were very useful.

I also have seen a Wisconsin VF-4 that was run by an electric motor using all four cylinders to compress air. It powered a sandblaster for making tombstones.

We found a tool sale on Hiway 50 at Echo summit this morning. I’ll know more of what I got when the pieces come out of the evaporust but for sure there was some S-K and Snap-on. My wife picked up a bunch of mini pine cones for her garden. The prices were good on the tools and the pine cones were free.

Lugz & bmwrd0 - thanks for the tip. 4.cycle’s thread partially fills the gap I mentioned with excerpts from 1938, 1948, 1959. It’s a good resource, and clearly represents his painstaking work.
The 1948 cat has a pretty close match with 9pc and 12pc 3/8dr sets that seem to come in the same blue box (as my Super Quality). Arg! So many manufacturers didn’t see fit to include dimensions - just “in a metal box.” The larger sets mentioned in the caption get dimensions, but not the ones in the images.

I think the Chromium Vanadium markings are actually an Indestro tell as well. With Duro and Indestro being so intertwined, it’s hard to be sure. Here is my 1/4” drive set, but the box may not be original to the rest of the tools.

Roger. I was referring mainly to the contents, with the 8-point sockets. For some reason I can't seem to find an Indestro "Cub" set WITH them, even later in the 40s and 50's, almost as if it was intentional. But yes, in general I have always been of the position they have far more in common than distinctions, of course, especially at the foundational level (construction methods, dies, etc).

Snagged this, quickly, for $250. Fella had it next to a clapped out Craftsman roller set at $150. Asked him to help me tip it into my Subaru, I think he regretted both the selling price and the offer to help.

Nice Find!

I'm more interested in the wide versions, but that many shallow drawer would have got my attention for sure!

30" wide, right?

Thanks! I don't think I've seen an 11-drawer box for sale locally, ever, so I jumped on it at lunchtime.

It's 28 1/4" wide -- also shallow at just 24", but it fits in the shed and will hold a lot of wrenches and flat stuff. I have a double-bank low Lista box at work, this is for the home tools. Have been struggling with a Husky box that just doesn't have enough drawers.

There was no "Lista" sticker or tag on this one, I don't think the seller knew what it was. A little attention to the bearings and the drawers are silky smooth. A hidden advantage of the shallow drawers is they weren't used for heavy stuff -- I saw some Listas at a locomotive factory auction a dozen years ago that were worn out, and that takes some doing.

Former boss told me he used model T engines for a compressor. 2 to run it, 2 to for the pump and a big wood barrel next to it for a radiator.

I've seen compressors made from a refrigerator compressor (way old school - not the sealed boxes they make now, but those can be used for small compressors for like air brushes..)

This almost got away from me. Showed up stupid early (3hrs) to an estate sale today (nothing else better to do), was 4th in line, and passed up some other stuff while searching this out. Turns out there was a secondary nook behind a wall with the shelf it was on. Found it, and breathed a huge sigh of relief. This estate company is known for pretty reasonable pricing, and doesnt really know tools, so lots of stuff goes cheap if you are willing to poke around.

2.5" jaws, 5-53 on the keyway. Price paid is attached to the handle in the pic.IMG_20200728_103305_01.jpg

Yup, you are drawing some serious vacuum right now! Only way that could have been better was if it had a power ram attachment on it

Forgot to add a couple of other guys I know were behind me in line, and also searching for it right behind me. I couldnt tell the size from the listing pictures, but could make a rough guess based on other stuff. These little guus are still pretty hefty!

It's been a very quiet time for tool accumulation, and no way am I going out just to crowd into a garage or estate sale with our current COVID rates here. I've gone to a few deserted ones, with the expected results. I've bought a few things from previously established sellers, but recently found some things on CL and an auction. Even convinced the CL seller to ship it for a few extra $$.

First off was the auction, found it on a FB Tool page, and the seller was courteous and actually posted a few dozen pics of interesting tools, instead of furniture and clothes to whet the appetite. I forget how many lots, somewhere around 700, and I scored three. As I am having things shipped, I always assume a 100% increase in total cost to me, and only look at small, light things. Shape recognition was key to winning these lots.

First lot I won was listed as a Wood Pike Hook Pry Bar (needs new wood handle)
Second was a Bag, Level Bar Piece, Dremel Bits
Third was Bag, Assorted Starrett Measuring Tool Pieces

In this pic, they are top (1), Left (2), and Center and Right (3)
IMG_20200728_144324-X2.jpg

At first glance, the 1st item could have looked like a pry bar (Lady's foot design), except for the need for a new wood handle. Turns out to be an unmarked 1/2" lock mortise or swan neck chisel. 17-1/2" long, and about 2#, still reasonably sharp.

The second listing looked suspiciously like a set of Starrett Ball Gauges, for measuring ID of holes. The level bit is modern, and Dremel bits are pin lock wrenches. The Starretts were 829 A-D, and a broken #229.

The third listing struck me as a die makers square, and thread gauges. Starrett 453 square, and #4 & #5 V thread gauges. No idea what the pieces in the center are. Appreciate any input on what they might be. Not seen in B&S or Starrett catalogs from the 1930s. The 6 identical bars (1 cut short) fit through the hole in the one wrench like piece.

IMG_20200728_144324-X2.jpg

Happy with the overall cost to my door.

I bid on a few other lots, only because they were at reasonable prices at the time I bid. Two of them were bracket parts for surface measuring tools, and they both went nuts in the last few minutes. A small set of Stanley 45 blades was nuts even before I was to bid, and went up to 5x my bottom feeder limit. Others were 2-3x what I would have bid, so someone must have recognized things I missed.

This pic of the CL haul was listed as 2 Cherries carving gouges, and included the Millers Falls #107 carving tools, from a 1959 catalog it seems. The Two Cherries edges need a bit of touch up, and one gouge is wallowed out in the handle, so I may make a new handle, since I need to make a bunch of them for some other handle-less carving tools. Since he was willing to ship, I was quite pleased.

IMG_20200728_144908-X2.jpg

That's all for now, hope you all are staying safe and sane!

I've seen compressors made from a refrigerator compressor (way old school - not the sealed boxes they make now, but those can be used for small compressors for like air brushes..)

You have just described my first compressor. Found a belt drive ref pump, scrounged a motor, bought a pressure switch from the surplus store and used a old Freon tank for storage. Cased it all in a old kitchen cabinet from the curb and viola! I used this compressor for years until I bought a Craftsman unit.

I'm still not going to any sales or fleas due to COVID, but I did pick this little guy up locally. Some electronics diagnosis and repair has it working nicely--the only issue is one of the four presets doesn't function (the tuning slug is stuck). I also repaired a crack in the bakelite case. I will reassemble after installing a power resistor to drop modern line voltage to the 115-117VAC for which this was designed and replacing the dial lens with a repro. I'll finagle a new back from some cardboard.

Finally got around to starting the sort on a few things.....

The craftsman stuff other than the wrenches I posted last time that was in the grey and red craftsman box I at least got sorted. More to come soon enough.

And the snap on rolling service cart. Good amount of Blackhawk sockets in that service cart might have to build a compete set now! And dump all the random ones.
