The attached Picked these GO JAKS 5000 at a garage sale for 6/$200. I probably will sell two of them. He didn't want to split them up so I made the deal. They are in great condition. It was later in the morning, and one of the larger (price) items he had left. He said he was moving (older person) soon. BTW, it was my wife that thought I should get them.

I hit a few local sales today in the way to a grocery pick up. Mostly junk except for these - Coleman lantern and can of white gas, mostly full for $3. Dome has a few minor rim dings but is almost minty otherwise. I am not sure if this was a good deal but for the price I figured it would be a good user! Looks vintage but not so vintage that I am super **** about it. Anything I should do before I fire it? The fuel in it smells fresh. Also picked this craftsman long c drill with chuck for $1! It is dirty but should clean up well and looks super cool! The from end reminds me of a Art Deco design airplane

Great deals on BOTH Smoke!

three bucks for the fuel (thats Cheap!) and a free lantern!

The fuel inside - IF its not regular pump gas (with the can there, I doubt it) should be fine. (Smell should be sort of sweet, rather that the fume Pump gas has)

Does the pump work? if not see if the pump leather is leather or neoprene, Leather you can oil (neatsfoot is best, but Ballistol, or if you must, olive oil will do in pinch), Neoprine not pumping and the pump is probably done, but you can try an oil... If leather and its shot, leather pump cups are easily available.

Those mantels look good in the pic, but make sure there are no holes. You can permanently mark or even break a globe with the plasma stream that can leak out...

The cap gasket may or may not leak, make sure it doesn't

If the main valve or cleaning lever are hard to turn, you can crack the packing nut till it loosens, and conversely if either leak, you can tighten the same nut..

Other than that follow the lighting directions closely, and you should have a great user. the 220's are pretty much bulletproof once any small issues are taken care of.

I would pick up some spare mantles, as those are a consumable. Walmart usually has them, but try to stay clear of the clip-ons. Those break as often as not.

Thanks for the info outlaw! I know it is white gas inside. We used to use white gas stoves in scouts. When checking the mantle, how do I check to see if it has holes? Just visual inspection? Didn’t you create a lantern thread?

Visual, both unlit and lit (you are really looking for obvious anomalies in the burn, but don't blind yourself...)

I did a write-up on the Coleman forum for diagnosing lantern issues recently, I should cross post it to my camping gear thread but for now: Basic Lantern Diagnostics:

Went out to find more sales this AM (having the wife work from home has really got me out and about, as both of us being home all the time leads to danger...) and picked up a few things:

The box of radio parts was $5, the two socket boxes (the Craftsman holds a Dunlap ignition set, a (H) bar and P&C mini wrench and the other is a Thorsen with both inside and end decals) along with this:

Long C blowtorch were from an estate sale and cost $25. The sockets and drill index cost $3 at another sale. The index is cool as it has wood bit holders inside. I had never seen one with a decal before, so I had to have it.

The other day, picked up a hand plane at a yard sale which only had the markings on the iron, which was Keystone Mfg Co Louisville KY (ie. pic 5 shows it faintly on the iron)

Usually those are marked on the toe. If nothing obvious try a low angled light, might help.

I am pretty sure it’s not a Stanley, but that’s as far as I can go right now. Theirs usually had a patterned lever cap.

Might mean the batteries leaked inside the light.
Yea I hope not, it was just a dollar but would like to use it.

There just isn't much to grip onto on the battery cap. Don't want to ****** it up using a vice and pliers.

Nice finds! That long c torch is even cooler than the long c drill I found today

BW what was the issue with the Columbian?

Nothing really. Just wasn't what I was looking for and I didn't think would sell as well. No swivel and I think the jaws were fixed too. It was a hefty Vise with 4.5" Jaw and when I called back I was told it sold a couple hours after I was there. Fair price $40. Is that a you **** price I missed out on? If I didn't already own a couple USA 4" vises I would have bought it. Estate company said they would sell it to me for $20 if it was still there day 2 and that's the chance I was willing to take.

It's a Utica M-3. The leather washers could use some tlc but otherwise its in great shape.

Nice. looks like those have some value? good score.

Shortly after I moved in, I found a MK 3 MOD 0 2V376 USN divers knife/sheath in the bushes of my townhouse patio. Crazy huh? Great shape, no rust just grungy with dirt. Not even any blood residue. It looks to have the factory edge and to have never been sharpened after that, much less used by any diver.

I wonder what the old lady who lived here before me was doing with it?

I forget how a nice knife feels in the hand, LOL. Luckily, I am able to resist yet another collecting hobby. I'll stick to kitchen knives.

Yeah its not a bad price if you are in need of a vise, but I would probably have left it also for the shot at half off.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I've been 2nd guessing myself on it. If I bought it I might have had to start saying I am a Vise collector and not just buying what I need in my workshop. I paid alot more for my 4" USA vises but they are better regarded brands/models. I do not have anything against Columbian but like was said before they don't hold the same value as others.

On our way home from sailing I spotted an estate sale sign really close to home that somehow we missed in the ads. It was a professional but one we haven't seen before. This is what I spotted and fortunately I was one the right side of the table while other guys were coming around the bend. I had to look at the price tag twice but it was $60 so I grabbed it. I think the sellers thought is was a small wood lathe vs metal lathe. (the previous owner turned wood pen blanks with it).

After I brought it home I wondered if there was more to it like a motor, etc. So I went back to the sale and found an X,Y table, what I think is the correct motor and some kind of pulley bracket. All three for another $55.

I also picked up the early style Workmate for $8.
Davefr, you ****. That lathe was $206.95 in the 1964 catalog (p30) - $1721 in today’s dollars! You paid something like $7.22 in 1964 dollars.
I think the pulley bracket is for changing speeds? The catalog suggests 1/3hp minimum, 1725rpm.

Picked up this inflater/deflator from a garage sale yesterday. I can’t tell who makes it but the lady said her husband used to be a dealer for Matco. Anybody seen one of these before? It has an internal piece of plastic and, if you use it one way, it will help inflate things. Flip the plastic around and it will cause a vacuum and deflate stuff.

Wrap the thing in rubber before going to town with vice/pliers. Failing that, NOS tailcaps are only about $3 off eBay, so I wouldn't worry too much about buggering it up.

That Champion ratchet is very cool I seen one at a flea market when I was a kid but the people wanted $10 for it and the chrome was flaking off of it and so my parents wouldn’t let me get it. I haven’t found one since so that’s cool to still see them out there.

I got one from my grandfather. Was my go to for 30+ years til I broke a tooth. Now gets limited use, but still my favorite ratchet.

RTM:

Re-checked toe, but no maker mark found.

The dimensions of this plane is 8 inches long with cutting iron of 2 inches.

The other plane with the Keystone MFG Co on cutting iron, was more a traditional wood plane, vs this one which looks to be a transitional version.

The other Keystone Mfg Co had no markings beyond the cutting iron, which was like one I picked up. Discussion on other one, was they felt it was outsource made and sold through a hardware store.

The adjuster handle on mine looks different than other Keystone Mfg Co.

Thanks for info on above.

Morning excursion to Blue Ridge Flea near Saylorsburg PA. $22 brought home...
Crowntop shaper set, noname MIUSA dado box w/1 raker (maybe it will hold one I have), LSStarrett No11 combination square sans awl, Hawkeye (Marshalltown IA) Charles Benesh 1903 patent wrench, Proto 1448 BFH, Proto 9684 Phillips sd, NIB nibbler, C’man holdeez sd, Herbrand cape chisel;
Bonney RF46 flaring die, 406 tappet adj, “A” S-wrench; MDF 9” auto; Snap-on 387C dikes, 1/2dr speeder, P2 sd; MIUSA 1/2dr m-m ext. I also picked up a rawhide mallet for LesserDaughter2, but she confiscated it before I could get it into the group photo.
I passed on a HDSmith Perfect Handle pipe wrench, because I think I have one the same size. If not, it will be a regret.

Edit - Yeah, I’ve got a gap from 8” to 14” with those Smith wrenches. Pretty sure it was a 10” or 12”. Rats! On the up side, the dado box is a perfect fit for my C’man dado set!

More on the Alligator/Crocodile wrench:
When I first spotted it, I though it was going to be a Bonney Vixen wrench, and it is remarkably similar. When I saw it wasn’t Vixen, but Hawkeye, I almost passed on it. But then, my eye came back to what wasn’t ALLENTOWN PA, but MARSHALLTOWN IA...hmm, sounds familiar.
My family relocated to IA twice: in the early 1860s, and again from the 1880s to about 1905. My gggrandfather was a blacksmith briefly & my ggrandfather was born there. Orphaned, he apprenticed as a miller, eventually owning his own business. On our cross-country trek two years ago, MrsLS & I spent the night in Belmond (where they lived), and stopped to look around Garner and Mason City.
I have three photos of my ggrandmother, all taken at a studio in Marshalltown. So, as an artifact from an “alternate reality” (where my gggrandfather survived the war to forge wrenches with his son), I had to have it.
As I cleaned it up, I noticed that the 5/16 threading hole had a broken-off chunk of rod in it. Someone had sawn about 2/3 through it, so I jammed a screwdriver into the slot and tried turning it out. No luck. So I finished the cut with a hacksaw blade, and tapped each of the two halves out with a punch. Good as new! I would like to know what pending patents apply to this wrench - no clues from DATAMP or AlloyArtifacts.

I went back to the same sale where I bought my PLUMB ball peen hammer.

BTW, thanks Don for your input concerning the possible age of the hammer!

I picked up a couple of Vlchek punches and a Henry Disston & Sons Plumb Level for $9.

According to the catalogs available on Archive.org it is a No. 9 Plumb Level (Non Adjustable) and was advertised in Disston's 1891, 1921, '26 & '29 catalogs, but not thereafter. The stain and sealant are not are original but the glass vials may be. I rubbed the sealant off the brass with acetone and some elbow grease then hit it with some Blue Magic. I smoothed the wood finish with some 0000 steel wool and mineral spirits and then used Johnson paste wax on it.

Now about that red plug--obviously not original--nor is the white one on the other side with the depiction of Jesus...

Were brass plugs original? Does anyone have a picture of one?

EDIT: The 1912 patent is for the "raised ribs at hand grip location". The depiction in the 1891 catalog does not have them but depictions in the later catalogs do. Jesus is not depicted in any of the catalogs.
