My wife is canning this weekend, so it is imperative that I get as far out of the house as possible. So, I hit more sales! You can tell it is summertime here, as the number of farm sales is equal to the number of estate sales. But, farm sales are never as good, as they don't seem to ever sell anything of value...

But anyway, I hit two estate/farm sales today, neither as good as I hopped, and two shop sales, and neither of them was any good. One had a sign saying cash only, and had priced a bunch of stuff in the 1k range...

Here is what I found:

From the first sale, what I now realize is a put together Proto "set", Plomb extension, Fleet wrench and a Challenger wrench roll. $10

Then I hit the two shop sales, gradually working to the other farm/estate sale. Both sales were way out in the country, on opposite sides of town. And the second was not what I expected. Lots of Harbor Freight, nicknacks, and general junk. A few B&S motors, but not old enough to be interesting. But, off to the side was this beauty:

And at $25 I couldn't pass it up. I have one that is on the back burner for a refurbishment, but this is too nice.

One side note, being home all the time with my wife is causing me to go out to sales on more days than I used too, doing minor damage to my pocket book. I love my wife to death, but we all need breathing room and it is easier for me to get out. Not sure what will happen after we all go back to work...

Good advice from seber and Outlaw about Disston, and although I'm probably late for adding advice, if you have a choice, I'd stay away from the silver medallions that just say Disston and USA and have small circles surrounding the central keystone. Those saws are from after Disston was bought by HK Porter and the quality plummeted. You'll also run into a lot of saws with a medallion that says Warranted Superior. Although vastly superior to the HK Porter saws, the Warranted saws from most of the big manufacturers of the time were second tier quality--they only put their name on highest quality product. If you are interested in Disston saws, check out the Disstonian Institute.

The silver medallions are losers, but otherwise, big medallions, and sunken medallions are all older. Real real old saws may not even have medallions. I have a Butcher with a stamped blade, and no medallions.

But if you want Brands, Atkins (3 As on medallion), Disston, Groves, Simonds, Spear & Jackson etc, and many small makers you’ve never heard of (Something Bakewell & Madsen)

Thanks for these advices! I did already go to the sale and bought four saws before your words of wisdom came in. How did I do?.... Seems I did good :)

The first two images are the two branded saws I bought at the sale(Disston and Atkins). Oh, and the price had dropped to $4 a saw. The third image is one I already had that was a freecycle gift. The fourth image was also at the sale but luckily I didn't buy it :). The 4th one definitely looks older than the 3rd one(both same brand). I also bought the metal saw in the right corner of the group picture; just says "made in germany". And I bought the wood saw with no medallion that has teeth on both sides of the blade, bigger on one side, smaller on the other (more narrow blade on top of stack in group picture).

Now I see the difference in the color, size, and depth of the medallions you talked about.

In the future I'll create new threads for questions like this as I do think someone made a great point that the information shared will be of interest to others and easier to find in their own thread. Do we need a "show your saw medallion" thread? :)

There's a handsaw thread in vintage tools that might be a good place for medallions. It might be better to keep all handsaw stuff in 1 thread. Maybe LS has some thoughts on this. He started that thread over there.

First - do you want the saw as a user, or as a collectible? If a user, then condition is top concern. The advice you have so far is good. The sweet spot for users is 1940s - 1950s They are not beautiful, but they work and often turn up in nearly rust-free condition. Saws made after that are junk - ugly and useless.
As a collectible, the older, the better. 1890s-1930s are beautiful and represent the pinnacle of handsaw design and quality.
DON’T buy rust-pitted saws. Despite being hand-made objects, they were made in enormous numbers. If the rust is fine and even, it can be removed.
1&2 look like Disston no7 rip saws. I’d buy 2 if it was straight, and restore the upper horn with a piece of beech.
3 is interesting - I’d want a closer look.
4,5&7 look like Disston D8s, probably crosscut. Common but beautiful. I have my great-grandfather’s and it cuts very well.
6 looks like a Disston D23, or a relative. Another good user.
There are some pruning saws in the pile, too. The hacksaw looks nice.
$5 is a typical asking price around here, and I’d pay it if I liked the saw. If there is coarse rust, cracked handle, missing or replaced sawnuts, I wouldn’t pay $1, unless there was a specific part I could salvage for a different saw. The handles are typically non-transplantable, because the blades were hand-punched, the holes won’t line up - or if by some miracle they do, the angle of the grip relative to the line of teeth won’t be right ergonomically. (Has not stopped generations of owners from cobbling together all sorts of frankensaws, though.)

If you are looking for a user, take a look at identifying crosscut and rip saw tooth geometry. They work best when used for their proper task. Modern saws have a combination tooth geometry, which has led us to forget the importance of grain direction. Old saws will remind you. So you and your friend should really have one of each.

Now I need to go back, fact check your #s, and likely buy a couple more saws......lol. Honestly, you amazingly identified the saws from afar from part of their handles alone. I'll try and figure out if the disston I bought is in your top 7 list. I looked at some Disston images on google; could your 1 or 2 be a Disston and Sons? :)

The seller said another family member was a machinist and she is working to get his workshop/house ready for an estate sale. I asked if I could come by early, before the sale. She said no problem. I am really looking forward to it!!! Should be within a couple weeks she said.

I went back to the same three sales (in the same order) I hit on Friday for their 50% off days and came up with a few goodies.

First stop I scored a nearly complete set of Challenger 3/8dr metric sockets--missing the 14mm--including the 1260-2 ratchet, the 3" extension and the 13/16 spark plug socket; P&C #15 Cold Chisel; no-name rasp bit; Duro-Indestro 2735 11" extension; Vlchek 7/16 1/4dr socket; 1/4dr Mustang sliding 'T' with a Husky 1/4 6pt socket; and Utica 31-8 Duckbills. $3 for the lot.

Until today I hadn't ever heard of Mustang tools and Macduf scores two sets in the post above! I now know that they were a New Britain econo-line.

22 Aug 20-1.jpg

Second place I picked up feeler gauges from Goodell Pratt and Dunlap; and a toenail clipper for our new pooch. All three for $1.

22 Aug 20-2.jpg22 Aug 20-2a.jpg

Final stop I got some additional blades for the Allway Saw handle I bought the first time; a Sears paint can tool from the '50s; a J.H. Williams No.700 3/8 (U.S.S.) engineers wrench; a Stelray self-centering punch; and the last two wrenches I had hoped were additional parts to the Ford Model-A tools I bought the first day--no obvious indications of that, though. Everything for $1.

22 Aug 20-3.jpg

The Stelray caught my eye but I cannot find anything but about a tool company of that name--or anything else except that Raymond R. Luben applied for the patent in March 1946 and was award patent #2423511 in July '47. Mine says Pat. Pend. The patent indicates that the notch above the countersink can be used to extract the tool once embedded in the work surface using the claw of a hammer. Just looking at the patent again, the co-inventor's name is Elbert C. Ford--so there could be the El Ray part, but there is no indication where the St comes from.

I can not speak for what the USPTO did a hundred years ago but current state the UPSTO will send out one copy to the patent inventor or assignee if there is multiple inventors. The new cover pages do not look too far off from the original design. I attached a copy of what they look like now.

Very cool piece!Screenshot_20200822-153515.jpeg

I agree. Probably the certified copy for the issued patent at the time.

The newer design you linked is what I got printed on a plaque for a patent of mine (and three other people) that was issued a few years back. Not gonna make me a cent, but at least I have a thing to put on my wall to impress people. ;)

I spent less than $40.00 on all this.

Saturday my son joined me on a trip to the nearby city. He needed some fine solder for an electronic repair, so we stopped by the really great store: Norvac in Salem.

After running some errands, we decided to check out some garage sales. After two duds, we found one that looked promising. It had been going since Thursday, so it had been picked over. The first thing I saw was the Plomb box in photo #1. No, it did not sell for the price marked! I did get everything for $11.00.

I'm slowly building up a set of the snail brand spanners, not that particular style (different snail image! :) ) style is more similar to the lion brand you picked up.
I have a set of horse Hames that belonged to my grandfather from pre-tractor days that are Lion brand.
Thought I had photos of both on my phone, but don't will take a pic later for anyone that's interested.

LostBoy, I thought you UK folks would appreciate the old Whitworth stuff. Now to find out about those EnFo pliers! They have a nice logo.

The series I'm slowing gathering is the style on the left, I only have 6 of the series so far, ranging from the no. 3 (shy of 6 inch) to the no. 17 (just over 2ft. In length).
I actually don't know much about either brand, including how many are in the series. But enjoying trying to find them.

P.s. I'm Irish, not from the UK. I don't get triggered by this fairly simple mistake, but many from my country can.
I am from the British isles, but not Britain. This is possibly more political than this forum allows, but just passing this on for info, nothing more. No offence taken by your post.

Haha I know the feeling. It's too bad that the USPTO doesn't send a copy to each inventor. Those 3rd party people that send out the mailers charge an arm and leg for a display piece. I though about making my own which wouldn't be too terribly hard to do. I have been on a bit off a roll lately with the USPTO locking down 3 NOAs in 6 weeks!

We wandered about yesterday to some Estate Sales and I found some clamps at a TOO.

A 6" Jorgenson C-Clamp , a 6" Hartford sliding bar and a 6" Taylor sliding bar.

Bought an solid unknown maker 2 drawer tool box. I am asking about it in the Vintage Tool Box thread.
A Buck Bros and a GreenLee gouge.
A small chisel (gouge also ?) marked Made in Germany and also marked Atlas Tool Co New York !
Proto driver, Stanley Sweetheart plane blade,
a tool holder with a chuck and the smallest wood level I have come across.

Not a bad day in these times. Brian

Only made one purchase at the flea market this morning. A mixed 1/4” drive set in an early sk box. Most of the original sk pieces were there, including some “chrome alloy” sockets. Also a few plomb, proto, and husky sockets along with two industro ignition wrenches and a ratchet. I think I got off easy at 15 bucks since the seller used the phone-a-friend option to decide on the price.

Three wheel band saw. It gives great throat depth without the giant size required for a conventional 2 wheel band saw. Its harder on blades as the tighter radius work hardens them faster.

I've got mustang taken care of. a complete 1/4 and 1/2 set .... I think. any idea on age? an old goddell Pratt push drill, a 4" cresent, and an 8" blue point.

The mustang sets are 30’s... made by New Britain at the same time they were making craftsman tools. Please post those in the vintage section in the New Britain thread

Three wheel band saw. It gives great throat depth without the giant size required for a conventional 2 wheel band saw. Its harder on blades as the tighter radius work hardens them faster.

Thanks Outlaw. I do not like not being able to see the blade in action. Of course, I assume it's at very low position in the pic. Too limited for me to be interested in but it is in stellar condition. Hopefully, bmw will inform us what he plans to use it for?

OR, San Antonio is definitely hotter for tools during the pandemic than Austin is. Although there have been some. The only thing that was enough to get me to an estate sale was the Craftsman gray & red 3-drawer middie about a month ago. I sent you a PM re: the Challenger stuff. I've got a small Challenger box I picked up a few years ago you might be interested in. PM me when you see it.

Found this Snap-on KRA-281 3/8” drive set. Most of the tools don’t have date codes, but the ones that do are 1962. There were a few other brands of sockets, like Giller, P&C, Husky, etc. they’re in the lid for the photo.

Paid $55 for the set.

So my wife told me to run back to the estate sale where I picked up the patent yesterday and see if they still had the postcard of Thomas Edison's house because the inventor on the patent had worked with Edison at one point. Once my brain figured out it was not a trap.... I was on my way!

Picked up a few goodies, nothing amazing. Got the postcard and two old pictures. An empty HoloKrome 66 box (you guys are a bad influence. I would have passed on this last year), a set of 4 Chicago Specialty pressed steel sockets, a Globe brass plumb bob, a Lodi punch, and an Adamson vulcanizer, and two more metal drawers with wooden fronts. $16 total. My wife was happy, I got the post card. She did ask what it cost and i had no idea. Next time I will say $15, and my stuff was an extra buck.:dunno:

I, too, have a few Snail Brand wrenches, in three different styles, including one with very sharp jaws made for Colchester Lathe Company. I am not collecting them, per se, actively/deliberately, just casually picking them up when I run into one in the wild. See pics.

All,
I posted many more photos of the Snap-on K-21 MechaniKit box on the Snap-on thread if anyone is interested. Click here and scroll down. Can't miss them. Several posts in a row.

Thanks Smoke! This is an interesting box. It is like the 5495 box that was used for the most complete (5400-OC) 1/2 drive set, except it has an extra divider with cutouts to clear the speeder handle.

This Plomb box is an extra. I have an identical one in perfect condition.

The Master box is also interesting. It looks pre-WWII. Do you have Ward's Master-branded tools to put in it? I haven't emptied it out yet, as there is little of interest in there.

Sometimes you come across a neat logo on a tool. This sale had a file with a very nice logo. It is an Zenith.

Do we have a thread on cool logos in the Vintage section?

The wards box would be of interest to rileysan! I thought it was speed master tools so plomb made but now I don’t think so?? I haven’t studied their logos but he has! I would love the plomb box however!

I’ve been itching to go somewhere big time, so today I checked out a private sale. I called the # first, and a man with a European accent answered. He sounded pissed off.

Oddly, he tried to dismiss me immediately after asking where I was coming from (under 50 miles). He said “Dat is quite far”. I responded with “I know the area a from my job”, and he proceeded to give me a time to come over (12-4). We talked for a minute about the items but not in detail. He said, “ My partner and I will show you around. Call when you get here, we’ll open the gate.” My fiance heard the whole brief conversation and thought it was strange.

I was excited to get out and go there, a sale with lots of tools supposedly. Didn’t get my hopes up too much because of the impression he left.

I rolled up to the house around the early end of the time frame he gave me. He and a woman were on a golf cart and let me on in without dialing, so I followed them around the property and back to the shop.

I get out the car, mask on (as did they), and they seemed pleasant.. I jokingly said to the woman “How did you know it was me?” She responded “Oh, we have people coming every 30 minutes”...

Okay whatever, I thought. Is this a ***** house or something?

Then some quick comments about our masks, bla bla bla.

So they lead me in and immediately the woman dumps a boat load of instructions about this is for sale, this isn’t, he’s doing the pricing, bla bla bla. I asked whose tool collection, and she said “family”.

Already I’m not feeling good about this sale.

First room, lots of tools but nothing interesting. Except, I spot the Posilock on the wall. Suddenly, “Oh, we have to get the gate in a minute, someone is coming to buy such and such.” Ok, so I look for a minute and then ask about the slide hammer puller.

The guy says, “I will sell you the puller, but I’m not going to sell it cheap”. Great, here we go.:wtf::sad: He tells her to look up the price. Here we go again.:wtf::sad::lol:

He comes back with the puller is $100 new, I am selling everything at 50%.

50%, 50%, he must have said it 6 times while I was there. 50% of retail on everything, even for old used dirty rusted stuff?

Meanwhile, the woman wants to show me the other room full of tools. At the same time, the next customers shows up for something.

I wait till their deal is done, then I ask about a 6” Wilton mechanics vise on a homemade stand, welded up to an old rim and tire base. Covered in grease and cobwebs, no name plate or markings visible, in need of paint, etc.. The guy says “Zat is a very expensive vise. $285.” Ok, I’m done asking prices. The guy had been treating me like I’m dumb since the phone call, so I said what brand is it? “Something with a W”, he says.

I went in the other tool room, listened to all the lady’s instructions for that room. I spot a Snap On speeder in a box on the floor. There were a lot of tools, but some boxes and things were off limits, NFS. This included a loaded top box of ratchets, sockets and wrenches.

Another main box, I was told I could pick tools from, or the whole box, $500.

Ok, so now I’m making a lil’ pile on the floor. The other two customers are there when whe get the big announcement. we have 15 minutes left to shop :lol::lol: What, these people are a joke. I’ve been there 10 minutes. Then the woman says “make that 10 minites, I need a break before the next customer comes

Well, I stuck it out and put my pile together through the next customer. “Gunter Gold” over there was getting angry with the third customers, a guy and his son, whom they were trying to convince that this little vertical dresser they wanted was worth a fortune. He and country girl gal pal “Googlin’ Geraldine” were quite the pair. “ Oh, this dresser is very expensive, it’s solid wood, etc.” Yeah, but it’s dirty and full or garage junk.

I told the guy I was done, and he started with the whole 50% thing again.

Told him some of these tools need some attention, and he told me make an offer. He didn’t like my offer, so we worked in the puller, and the Snap On drill basically came in cheap as well. We settled on $75 for all.

After all their bull ****, quite a fair price to be honest.

I made a last pass and realized I totally missed the socket drawer in the main chest. Found a 1/2” Par-x ratchet and 1/4” Bonney extension, but the guy refused to sell anything else from the box because it would devalue it. The woman mentioned going to the pawn shop with things. Good luck!

Oh well, it seems like they didn’t care to sell anything, but wanted a fortune for everything.

I left there after a half hour or so, soaked full of sweat, but not until after one last laugh. I offered $75 for the vise. He said an EXPERT came in and told him do not sell that vise for less than $500! I’d like to meet said expert. Apparently they were asking $300 and lowered it to $285. He kept telling me the vise is $600 new. Then the woman kept searching the web and showing me how the stand itself was $600 new!

Yes, yes, that may be so, for a brand new Wilton stand! Good grief.

I’m happy with what I left with, always have fun looking, but when the people aren’t cool good grief.

I forgot, before the deal, the guy said numerous times, “You know vat dis stuff cost new!”. Finally I got fed up and told him I know about a lot of tools, and what they go for. That shut him up, and that’s how I got a realistic and more than fair price.

Once again, no complaints about the final price, but man, had to share that story.

Here is the haul anyway.

-Snap On 1/2” speeder, wrenches, screwdriver
-Torque Control 3/8 torque wrench and case, with a head from Wright
-Posi Lock puller
-Craftsman 1-1/2” by 1-7/16” box wrench
-Napa 18” adjustable
-Williams short 9/16
-ratchets: 1/2 import knockoff of Penens, 1/2 Action, 3/8 Indestro, 1/4 Wizard in rough shape, 1/4 Thorsen breaker, 3/8 Mac slide bar and socket,
-4” China adjustable
-Craftsman ratcheting driver
-Vise Grip and Craftsman pliers
-Kraeuter duck bill
-AC PENN New York (stamped Germany) nippers
-Fairmount lg ball peen

Had a fairly junkful weekend. Parker 5" 373 swivel jaw, a 4" speed vise - someone know the make? Tool grinder with diamond wheels on stand. I will take some better pics of it later. Bunch of other stuff I haven't taken pics of including a box with a bunch of snap on and SK sockets for two bucks, Knipex Linesman pliers for two bucks, a huge Williams DBE for a buck.

Wow, ThreeBay, you do have a lot of patience! I hate those kinds of sales, as it is clear the guy has no idea what he is doing. I always figured when they need to scan the phone all the time, they A) have zero idea about tools and B) are in over their head in what they bid for the estate. Those are the kind of people who will ask 4k for a full tool box, cash only. No breaking it up. And then wonder why it is still for sale...

But, when they figure that out, and now the just want to be done with the whole thing? That is when you can get some great deals!

I’m not sure with that long handle, but it looks like a Stephens patent vise.

Thought I would leave empty handed between the looking up prices and 50% thing. It reminded me too much of numerous past sale experiences.

I can be quite patient at times. Easier with strangers.
