You have more patience than I do, :dunno:

^^^This

Regardless, some nice pickups there 3bay. Well deserved for the work you put in

in the same vain, a sale advertised early in the week on FB with date and times but no street address. Sales says all kinds of Snap-On, MAC, Matco, etc. but very few pictures shown. Sales also says No Low Ballers !! i.e "We know what we got ! " They finally post the exact address on Friday for a sale on Saturday and Sunday which is not really that unusual but now the ad says the green Snap-On tool box and tools are already sold ? okay.........whatever, the job is to get stuff gone. Well then they ad also says they will sell all remaining stuff for $3000 and to show up 30 minutes early if interested in that deal.

Well an ad like that gives me a bad vibe and subsequently didn't go, perhaps missed some good stuff especially considering the ad end up also showing up on CL on Saturday evening. Perhaps they didn't get the response on Saturday they were hoping but then again FB ***** and ads seem to often get pushed down and into some never never land it seems.

I did some horse trading with rileysan this weekend! I picked up some heritage era craftsman top chests for some parts for projects I am working on! I also picked up these Proto metal 1/4 drive box sets for some sets I am trying to put together! I got some Proto 1/2 drive dyna ring deep impacts! Also got a bunch of =v= wrenches to fill in a few spots in some wrench holders I am working on! I also picked up a bunch of craftsman hinsdale made stuff to complete a set I was working on. It may not look like much but I filled in a lot of holes and he got a couple of items he has been pursuing as well!

Went to the last day of a sale that was a tool/junk hoarder.

Hot nasty dangerous picking for an hour. So much nasty junk. Also maybe a world record number of jars with lids screwed to boards for storage.

Anyway, got out without damage and a couple of interesting things for $5.

Besides the items in the picture picked a half dozen craftsman sockets.

The cute little Craftman ignition pliers are marked P 9 (underlined) 4513.

I am interested in what the metal items are made out of? The nearly square block weighs 3 lbs 9.6 oz (1.632 kg), and the pointed rod weighs 1 lb 3.3 oz (548 g).

I was thinking they were stainless steel when I picked them up because everything else was rusty. But both pieces are magnetic like plain steel.

How to tell?20200823_190649.jpeg

Got this at a garage sale originally some kind of medical cart I think but will be a work bench and storage center now. Just couldn’t pass on it for a quick $20. It’s pretty well made and would guess the weight at about 80 lbs rolls around like a dream ball bearing casters on it.

As a collectible, the older, the better. 1890s-1930s are beautiful and represent the pinnacle of handsaw design and quality.
DON’T buy rust-pitted saws. Despite being hand-made objects, they were made in enormous numbers. If the rust is fine and even, it can be removed.
1&2 look like Disston no7 rip saws. I’d buy 2 if it was straight, and restore the upper horn with a piece of beech.
3 is interesting - I’d want a closer look.
4,5&7 look like Disston D8s, probably crosscut. Common but beautiful. I have my great-grandfather’s and it cuts very well.
6 looks like a Disston D23, or a relative. Another good user.
There are some pruning saws in the pile, too. The hacksaw looks nice.
$5 is a typical asking price around here, and I’d pay it if I liked the saw. If there is coarse rust, cracked handle, missing or replaced sawnuts, I wouldn’t pay $1, unless there was a specific part I could salvage for a different saw. The handles are typically non-transplantable, because the blades were hand-punched, the holes won’t line up - or if by some miracle they do, the angle of the grip relative to the line of teeth won’t be right ergonomically. (Has not stopped generations of owners from cobbling together all sorts of frankensaws, though.)

If you are looking for a user, take a look at identifying crosscut and rip saw tooth geometry. They work best when used for their proper task. Modern saws have a combination tooth geometry, which has led us to forget the importance of grain direction. Old saws will remind you. So you and your friend should really have one of each.

Lesserson, looking back at the pictures I bought your #6 (Disston D23) and an Atkins that looks most like your #3 but I do not see it in the picture. The Stanley Hand Plane I bought wasn't there the first time I went either. The lady said she opened something in the house and there it was. Maybe the Atkins saw was a new addition too.

I was looking as a user and bought the two bigger saws based on finding USA on the saw and good condition. As with some other things, as I learn more, a collector side does kick in too....

When I returned for the saws I bought this lot below for $35:
Four saws: $4 each
USA 3" clamps: $3 pair
Two deep Vise Grips: $3 each (never seen ones like these before)
Stanley USA Hand Plane: $5
Three files: $3 each

Congrats Smoke! Love those two Proto boxes!

3bay, your persistence and patience paid off. Too bad you couldn't get the Wilton. Did you consider following up with them on it? Maybe if they can't sell it they might be a little more willing to deal.

b.well, nice haul! Lots of goodies. I like picks like that. And I always love picking up old Stanley hand planes. Looks like that one has the rosewood tote and knob.

If those were Petersen Dewitts they would be worth north of $50/pair. Well done.

Thanks for the congratulations! I was pretty excited to get the Proto boxes! Now I have to start filling them with the era correct tools! If anyone has them, I would be interested ! I have already sourced some tools from roleson06 and have posted in the correct plomb/Proto threads.

This was my first tool auction buy. It’s actually a reverse auction where they lower the price until it sells, but if more than 1 person wants it you CANNOT offer more than asking, it’s just the first person to type sold. I can’t afford tool truck stuff so it’s cool to have some to show off now.

The $100 was just for the Snap On stuff. The Mac screwdrivers and Husky Wrenches were $35. They might be a low tier brand but full polished USA made Husky metric wrenches are super nice and I don’t feel bad about the price.

Most of the Snap On sockets are old style logo so I guess they aren’t really worth anything. However the 9mm-19mm 6pt 3/8 deep is new logo but old enough to be good bright chrome. Everything is Metric so that’s pretty cool. In this area that’s about as cheap as you can get Snap. 34 sockets/extensions and a couple screwdrivers so like a little under $3 each.

Picked up this parts/tool cabinet this afternoon, found on marketplace for $50. It's in pretty good condition, I believe it's late 40's or early 50's.

Nice finds. Seems alot of great finds are coming from farms. And I notice the old power tolls carry the Pointy "A" just like the old hand tools :)

That “creepy bear” is fairly recognizable for most guys into old shop equipment. They may be most famous for their alignment machines? I guess I am used to it? [emoji15]🤣

I grabbed one of them at the curb this spring and flipped it in hours. Mine was missing 3 drawers.

I didn't have room for it so away it went.

Nice find!

Well I finally made it out to a garage or rather a "shop" sale this weekend. With no swap meets and all the covid restrictions I just haven't gotten out much. I have been busy adding a wood working area to my shop though. Anyway this sale was a family clearing out the shop of an elderly craftsman who was getting too old and ill to enjoy his tools any longer. I didn't get to talk to him but could tell looking around his shop he was a very accomplished wood worker and boat builder. I believe talking to the family he was the original owner of the power equipment for sale.

I ended up buying only this Powermatic 180 planer for $600 in the last hour of the sale as it had not sold. It looks to be from 1961 by the Serial number but still has a partial inspection tag from 8-8-63 on it. I assumed it was three phase when I bought it but was surprised to see he had ordered it with the optional 5hp single phase motor. It also came with the knife grinder attachment and jointing head. A good find for me at this time as I have the room for it. I was a little too late to pick up a really nice Powermatic 72 table saw that he also had. A few pics. Ed.

That planer is a monster! From the model number would I be correct that it's an 18 incher? Just to look at it, it could be bigger than that. Any idea what it weighs?

P.S, at $600 You ****!!!

Thanks BFBOB. It is an 18" planer with variable speed feed rolls. The PO had a huge apple box set up behind it to catch the shower of chips. It will power through some lumber. Weight with the knife grinder is likely around #1250 but I haven't weighed it yet. I am anxious to put it to work. Ed.
