Wow, OR and MACD have similar tapes! I like OR's brass one.

Mike P, Love the trench Art Trench Lighter! Likely made in France by a solder! Those are awesome!

Mike: Great score on the SS cabinet! Suckage Awarded!

Lugs getting some real odd balls there!

OR - on the Box, I'm guessing for a 3/4 drive socket set? (too short for 1")

Thanks! I actually tried to grab this in June, but let myself get talked out of it. Fortunately, it got missed when some other items were removed.

Got my freebie home last night! Saved from the dumpster: A 5-foot tall, 3-foot wide, 1-foot deep stainless automation control panel.

Bummer for someone other than you. I ordered many of those for projects during my prior life.

https://www.grainger.com/product/HOFFMAN-60-inH-x-36-inW-x-12-inD-Metallic-32FD41

The above link says shipping weight of 163, so not awful once you get everything out of it. And no one pays that price, but at even 50%....:rocker:

Never thought of using one for a storage cabinet. Don't bin the fans or the electrical supply. Might be a nice thing to keep warm with recirculated air for things that don't like moisture.

Not much going on sale wise in my little town, but scanning the ads, I found a good looking sale about an hour south of me. So, early afternoon I headed down there. An hours drive got me 5-10 minutes to find the following:

Most of an early forties New Britain set, that also had a few early P&C sockets (to the right) along with Hinsdale, Snap-on, Wiliams, and D-I sockets, Snap-on, Vaco, and Bridgeport nutdrivers, an interesting pair of pliers, and a few odds and ends. But, when I was looking for any extra parts to the NB set, I grabbed this:

Why? Well, it had the tommy bar! Still golden from the preservative but untouched other than that, but the set also had Snap-on and Industro speeders and a few other odds and ends. But, with that box, I guess I will build a GMTK set, seeing as I probably have most of it already. But as I was making one last pass, I spied this and figured someone will need it.

That is the water tray for some model of Craftsman Block grinder. No grinder to be found at the sale, otherwise, I would have slipped it into its slot, but in this case, I grabbed it. All of that for $20.

It's 100% getting emptied. Over the winter, I'll mount it and put shelves into it.

The base is a separate piece, just rests on it. It's 2-inch square stainless steel tubing, has adjustable feet.

Mike

If it rests on 2" square tubes that run front to back, moving it with a pallet jack would work well once it is upright. I move stuff around my shop with a pallet jack all the time. I tend to modify the base of things or make a "pallet" for them to sit on in order to use the pallet jack. I often need to relocate things to make working space for oversize projects.

BTW, I have a forklift, too. It doesn't get in the tight spaces the pallet jack works so well in!

Thanks for information from Lugnutz, Old Radar and Outlaw on trench art information.

When I was at the yard sale, they had three trench art shells, but only the one I bought had the penny and half penny coins on it.

Did a little research and found several with cigarette lighters, but hadn't found one with the coins attached.

Thanks again for sharing and getting me pointed in right direction.

Mike

Nice finds! I have a slightly newer version of the New Britain set with two bands of knurling on the sockets and various drive tools. It was a fun set to complete. My speeder seems to be permanently attached to the lid. I don’t think it’s ever been removed. Putting together a GMTK will be a bit more of a challenge but the box is a great start. Maybe a McAleer? Let me know if I can help with the GMTK tools. I have a few extras.

Nice find on that new Britain set! Also that grinder tray should pay for the whole lot!

Hit the habitat for humanity today on a dump/ donation run and scored some small trim nails and 2 plomb chromed sockets- 7/16 and 11/16. I almost never find 3/8 drive stuff in the wild. I used the rusty or aged looking nails in projects or repairs on actual old items. It blends way better than new hardware!

Two throw-ins I got from my favorite local flea market dealer, Doug. The duralast 1/4” flex head is a pretty nice piece. Pretty good quality. The Thorsen 77MC is my first Thorsen piece. Both cleaned and lubed with superlube. Both very smooth.

A TOO appeared today on FB Marketplace and as it was around the corner I whisked away prior to an afternoon of raking leaves and yard work. As the ad showed many ,many HF tools but alot of odds and ends as well. I dug for about 30 mins and came up with this pile. There was more, but I am pretty full up in the garage right now, and need to cut back, sell more etc.

Got my freebie home last night! Saved from the dumpster: A 5-foot tall, 3-foot wide, 1-foot deep stainless automation control panel.

Weighs an absolute ton. Took a lift table cart and a few guys to get it out of work and onto my trailer. How I'm getting it off the trailer at home alone is TBD...

The long-term plan is to gut it out, and re-purpose as a storage cabinet in the garage.

Missed out on a nice stainless steel table, which got re-purposed and is still at work. The site leader wants it out of the building, so I may end up with it later.

Mike
Dang and there is still some spendy equipment in there yet. Those network switches look to managed ones and could be worth some serious coin. Might want to check it out.

I hit a few sales without much luck today, more driving than finding, but that is the hunt. If you don't look, you don't find. That said, I found a pack of Stanley 80 scraper plane blades (12) for a couple bucks at a Restore, and he rest came from a family run estate sale on the ritzy side of town. Ace screw extractor set, 32oz PL MB hammer, Stanley 90 marking gauge, Stanley chisle handle, unmarked scraper, two Stanley drivers with worn handles and perfect tips, a handful of drill points for a push drill, and a Lufkin 36" boxwood ruler. So, it seems to be a bit of a Stanley day.

Ebay is a good place to check prices. Be sure to go to the Advanced search section and check for Completed sales to see if any are actually selling and for how much. Good luck!

If that has a "[PLUMB]" logo, I have its 4 oz "[PLUMB]" logo mate for you and your GMTK. That's the pairing that was issued after October 1942. (Pre- and early war sets had a third 16 oz hammer.)

I don't know if it is a Plumb. The logo is a square and inside it is the word PL MB over Alloy. I think I can see a very faint round O between the L and M, but nothing else makes me think Plomb. No numbering, no plumb bobs, handle is wrong (but that happens) and I haven't seen enough Plumb hammers to recognize it as such.

I agree with Don - that PL MB is PLUMB. I think Lugz can tell ballpein OEMs at a glance, from the form of the heads, if he chimes in.
I cannot find my disapearing-reapearing bucket of severed hammer heads (must be in its vanishing phase), or I’d post a couple more PLUMB. I’m pretty sure I don’t have any with “alloy” in the logo, nor any PLOMB/PLVMB, either.

After a disappointing weekend with no worthwhile sales, I finally spotted a Craigslist listing for a local yard sale that actually mentioned tools so I checked it out. Here is what I came home with for very little money. The odd Craftsman wrenches had no COO so I’m sure they aren’t USA but I hadn’t seen that style before so I grabbed them. The 3/8” drive ratchet is an Indestro Super.

Those look like the last throes of Craftsman Asian flair wrench design, IIR.

Nice Indestro BTW.

On lauver's Craftsman Hand Tool Manufacturers & Date Ranges thread, thesilverone indicates D-AA is from China but gives no reference.

SWMBO and I went to a higher end estate sale looking for furniture to upscale our son's "teenager's bedroom" to "official guest bedroom". We found a full size bed w/ box spring, mattress and sheets, plus a nice antique vanity. At $425, they weren't exactly a bargain, but I got them to throw in the Crescent Crestoloy double-ended adjustable for no additional money, so there's that.

The Craftsman are spline wrenches, and yep, imported. They carried sockets and wrenches with the spline pattern, calling them “Universal”. The idea was they cover different types of fasteners including partially rounded off.

Pulled these out of the pile from my Dad's basement over the winter. Not sure if these were his or my Grandfather's.

Numbers are 30851 (10-inch) and 30852 (14-inch). Odd that they say Sears but not Craftsman? Any idea of age?

I do remember using a monkey wrench like this as a kid, FWIW.

Went to the last day of a sale to see if they had anything interesting left and picked up the Keen Kutter saw and the Craftsman Crown tool box for $5 total.

08 Nov 20-1a.jpg08 Nov 20-1b.jpg08 Nov 20-1c.jpg

The box is shot--the bottom is rusted through in several places and the lid has been bent over the hinges. I saved the tote, emblem and latch lock and recycled the rest.

After separating about three pounds of **** out of the tote, this is what was left:

Fleet 1/2" speeder and seven sockets in pretty fair condition
Vlchek 3/8" speeder and a single socket
Some CM 1/2 & 1/4 sockets to add to the collection
A large DOE--unmarked--I think I've seen a similar one posted and discussed recently but can't recall where
The rusty Bonney V25 1/4" ratchet was locked up but some WD-40 has improved it markedly
Couple of unmarked Hex sets, an unmarked Hex ratchet and two ells-one marked =TOMAHAWK=
Green knobbed Phillips is a Thorsen
Small Penens DOE date coded A 2.9 (1959)
The larger DOE near the bottom has an Indestro look to it but is unmarked
Husky combo
Lectrolite offset DBE

Barcalo! The geometric version is often unmarked.

Odd that they say Sears but not Craftsman? Any idea of age? I do remember using a monkey wrench like this as a kid, FWIW.
One of the Craftsman guys on the Crowntop thread may be able tell you when Sears started sourcing from Japan instead of the US (Erie Mfg). I don't know when you were a kid, but I would guess those are fairly modern. No earlier than 70s.

two ells-one marked =TOMAHAWK=
A couple mfgrs used that brand at the same time, annoyingly. Walden, for one.

MIKE,
I don’t think there’s anything unusual about finding non-Craftsman-branded Sears hand tools. I recall seeing side-by-side similar tools in the hardware departnent and being confused by price discrepency until I realized the lower-priced versions were not marked Craftsman. I don’t recall the precise terms, but I think the non-Craftsman had limited warrantees (like 1-year against manufacturing defects), rather than guaranteed forever. An unlimited warrantee effectively doubles the retail price.
As a retailer (and never a manufacturer), Sears did a LOT of experimentation with branding, marketing & pricing over the years. Do you remember when they announced they would never have another discount sale, just everyday prices? That was short-lived.

406Rich What a nice find! I've never actually seen a precision vise like that with the hand wheels. I wonder if it was for a lathe or a mill versus a drill press? Did that set you back an arm and a leg? You ought to post that on the vises thread IMO.

This is the you **** find of the weekend! Not only are they uncommon, at least the craftsman badges one’s especially this rectangular logo one but to find them with the jaws is almost unheard of! Great work! I can’t believe you got it at the last sale. Was it hidden by something or was there no price on it?

Late in the day, last garage sale in our area, sitting out on a table with another similar vise although the other was an offshore brand, he wanted $50, I tried 40 but he wouldn't budge, so for $50 it was in my car..:3gears:

The $5 RustBucket is bearing fruit. The first batch is done, and it came out much better than I'd dare hope. It turned out that on most of the sockets that still showed some chrome, the rust and **** was from others. It mostly just wiped off, leaving minor rust or none at all. This batch of 40 is largely Craftsman with a few Fleet and one or two others. That's typical of the usable ones. There are nearly 250 that are beyond saving, nearly all Taiwan, and will go for scrap.
Another 50 or so are in the E-tank and Evaporust and will be usable, though probably not as nice looking as the first batch.
I'll make money - unless you consider the time I've spent - but it's a fun project.

...oh, and I found one of the missing 10mm's!

A large DOE--unmarked--I think I've seen a similar one posted and discussed recently but can't recall where

The Art Deco styled DOE is a Barcalo. Some are so marked, some aren't. The bigger ones, 1" and up are pretty uncommon, so you've got a good start for a collection:rocker:
