Never say No! [emoji38] Picked up this assumed to be buffalo by the hanging hole. Needs a little TLC.IMG_20200826_203741162.jpeg

Looking for a Round Beam Plomb 1068 Double Box End Wrench

That’s gonna be a challenge. I want to see the end result. They were still using those in WW2.

I hit up a few estate sales over the last few days, but as it is nearing the end of the year it was pretty bleak. But still, persevere we must. Here is a group shot:

Today's finds: Proto cap screw puller, sliding bevel (no maker listed), HSS bit, Billings combo, MAC cotter pin puller. Thursday netted a woodie screwdriver, Duro Phillips bit, Stanley **** gauge, Plomb driver, small perfect handle (Germany), push drill points and wood holder, crossbar, and a broken Long C push drill that I picked up for some of the points (old style!) Oh, and a 4" Wizard adjustable which I picked up yesterday along with this:

A first edition of Guadalcanal Diary. Dust jacket is pretty beat but put in a protector and it will weather many more storms. Altogether, around $15.
I went out to look at a Snap-on K55, but it was more beat up than I wanted, and couldn't agree on a price with the seller. So it goes.

The original pin is missing, and the shoulder bolt has bodged threads so it's scrap. I can turn a replica pin easily enough, but does anyone know the angle of the taper? I can't think of a good way to measure it.

If you haven’t already, search “Prentiss taper pin” on Vise Repair 101 thread. I got six hits. I wasn’t searching your specific model, but you might PM one of the posters for measuring technique, or just pose the question on the thread.

Edit - I see you haven’t posted there for three years?

While this is probably my favorite thread on here, I haven't bought anything or had much time to post in awhile but did that change today. I picked up this 11 year old Grizzly band saw, two new blades, mobile base, and the riser ket to extend its capacity for $150. Machine will need new tires, but other than its great. Machine has been used very little, I mean it looks like maybe an hour or two on it. He said the base didn't have work, but once I got it home I found the casters and wheels where bolted up diagnal to one another so one wheel was going against the others. A few bolts later and she roles around great. 20201121_144600.jpg

Any time you get a big, hardly used tool like that at 20% of the new price, that's a steal! Well done!

Thanks, LS - I checked that thread at some length, got some good info, but nothing specific to the taper. I'll try again

And indeed I haven't posted much there because so many know so much more than I about vises!

I had a great morning (Lugz 2020_57) at the flea, and I would say that if the TUFFY 12" screwdriver (original, authentic Swallow Aircraft) was the only thing I came home with. Fortunately, I also picked up a bunch of vintage table tennis paddles, and a vintage 50's German pistol that I can finally afford. :)

So this year has been dry and slow for a lot of reasons. Yesterday, a neighbor asked if I could look at a couple of things at her Moms house. Turns out it was a couple of simple adjustments so I told them no charge, you are my neighbors. Mom asked if I needed any tools. If you do, help yourself to what is in the back room, we need to clean it out. I picked a few things and she said "is that all you want"? Back I went. Real pleased to have brought home the following...They offered to pay me as well and I said the tools were all I needed, so I guess that is a barter.

Very, very well done!!!

One can calculate the taper angle by taking three simple measurements.

1- First measure the depth of the hole. Lets called this h.

2- Then using a caliper measure the inner diameter of the top hole and then divide the diameter by 2 to get the radius. Let's call the radius of top hole rB (pls see diagram).

3- Similarly measure the diameter of the bottom hole and divide it by 2 to get the bottom hole radius. Let's call the radius of the bottom hole rS (pls see diagram).

Now rB-rS will give you the height of the triangle (pls see diagram).

The tangent of the angle is simply (rB-rS)/h. Take inverse tangent (also called arc tangent) and that should give you the angle.

If you are not sure what I mean, please pm me with the depth of the hole (h) and diameters of top and bottom holes and I will send you back the angle.

I had a successful and enjoyable weekend. My favorites from this haul are the complete set of craftsman crown top 1/2” deep sockets and the Gray 516 curved water pump pliers. I tested the Utica 3/8” torque wrench against my digital torque adapter and it’s spot on.

However the best part is getting up early, hunting for gems, and shooting the breeze with the sellers!9aea84cba27afd0f900bb72ef10c8b1c.jpg

I tried out a different flea market today after my regular stop. Inside the gate was terrible. Booth after booth of cheap phone cases and tiger blankets. But the parking lot outside had a few sellers with tons of older tools. I found a few things...
Some plomb sockets and a combo, plomb and p&c screwdrivers, 2 craftsman sliding t’s I needed for sets, and a pwa spark plug socket. Nothing was over a dollar.

I found a few things across a couple FB Market sales to pick up this weekend. It's the first metric tap and die set I've seen in my sales exploring this year. Also my first time to see both the Ridgid RHFT long handle ratchet, this one 1/2", and a fully polished Craftsman USA ratchet, this one 3/8".

The two long handle ratchets I got from a guy that gets regular stops from the Snapon truck. He had a snapon tool chest than ran the depth of his garage. Maybe two 54" chests side by side. Not to mention 10+ Vises, about 6 of them being Wilton Bullets. None of that for sale. The ratchets I got for $25.

I was happy to find the metric tap and die set. Owner said it was very lightly used, maybe twice. Needed it for a couple gun repairs. Got the set from his dad. Not sure how old it is. Is that a date on the front of the packaging? "08/97". 90s seems to be a good time fit for it. The walden ratchet really caught my eye. Had the williams socket on it and I don't think the seller knew that even came off....lol. Got the pair, or trio, for $30. Kicker is when I asked if the vise on his bench was for sale he said, "no, but I sold the larger 4.5" vise yesterday for $30." Yes it was an "old USA vise" but he didn't know the brand. I always find that strange. He said he posted it right after the tap die set and it sold in under 10 mins. I should have asked about a vise when we were making the deal for the td set.

Today I saw a Wilton Tradesman Bullet vise come up for $20. Condition looked great. Couldn't tell from the one pic if it was USA or Import. Auction was live for 18mins and I said I wanted it. Seller came back and said already sold.

Good deals are going QUICK on FBM. Are people getting notified of these things or just checking into FBM at the right time? FBM has asked if I want to be notified about a search and I've said yes but I have not been notified. I'll look into that.

Anyone know the manufacturer for the Cman tap and die?

Thanks!

Lugz, the cotter pin puller is Sabina era. The handle is some sort of plastic, shaped like the classic MAC wood handles.
Shhhweet! Very uncommon. I would love to see better, closer photos. Please post in the MAC thread. It's in the Index.

Also, for whatever reason, I never noticed your signature line before. In the process of The Great and Apparently Neverending Lugzsonian Reorganization of 2020 I have set some TRUTH stuff aside. Not too many pieces. A speeder, a sliding tee and a few sockets if I recall. I will take a photo and email you.

Picked this weather tool, aka weather station from my favorite dumpster on Saturday. Seems to work fine except for the outdoor humidy reading. I was looking in to buying one of these about a month ago. Also got a galvanized drip pan, and some gardening stakes.PXL_20201121_221546858.jpgPXL_20201121_221519838.jpg

Went to one estate sale this weekend and thought I was going to go broke 50 cents or a dollar at a time. Ended up only spending $30 first BOOKS! at 75 cents max I bought the following:
1946 catalog form Boston Gear Works
1924 street directory for Peterborough NH
1930 "Strangers Directory" for Boston MA
1890 illustrated guide to the Passion Play
1908 "Self Propelled Vehicles" includes amazing illustrations and a couple letters showing history of the book from the original purchaser down to the 1980s
1919 "The Gasoline Automobile"
1914 "Heat Engines" (steam, gas, steam turbine)
1920 "Steam Boiler Engineering"
1900 Ropers questions and answers for stationary and marine engineers and electricians
1905 ICS reference library covering mechanics, steam boilers, steam engines, air compression, pumping, mine haulage
1920 Gasoline Tractors
Jan 18, 1900 book from the acceptance & unveiling of the statue of Daniel Webster (in DC at Scott Circle)
1962 - Novelty "Smears and Robust Catalog" vintage humore and catalog parodies... hey it was 25 cents...

Between the amazing covers and the amazing illustrations, they will be fun to sort through.

then only a few tools .. MotorKit pliers, a punch that shall be researched, AutoTest battery tester, small tap and die stuff, small calipers, a couple shop signs, a box of old piston rings, starter springs, glass bowl fuel filter, something from an old marine engine, amp and voltage meters, unidentified metal block mounted to a wood base, NOS windshield wiper grommets for 32-34 Fords.

I have a habit as I am checking out of saying "...and whatever this thing is", and I met my match. The fellow helping me would just reply "THAT is 50 cents!" That's what that is!"

Duds, I would love to see the cover and some examples! Maybe the Crowntop thread? Since it's '62. Or right here.

Love the "Work and Win" sign. Good eye. Always admired your sensibilities.

Some stuff I picked up today from a couple thrift stores and an antique store that has a vendor who sells mostly tools.

Proto pebble 3724 line wrench
Plomb 3322 and 3211 wrenches
Proto mfd USA and Duro Chrome wrenches
Snap on crows feet
A no name mallet with USAAF stamped on the handle
Challenger torx screwdrivers
Two pairs of coveralls with the Arco logo on the sleeve. I like the brown one more because it’s got the guy’s name and “Arco oil and gas company” on the front. The blue one is nomex.

Happy Thanksgiving guys!

If you had to choose ONE item that you picked up this year as the item you're "Most Thankful For," what would it be?

I'd probably choose the Jet JMD-18 mill drill that I got for free from work. Tough call because I did pick up some inherited items when we moved my Dad, but I figure I would have gotten those anyway.

It's not been a stellar year for me, and nothing I picked up really stands out for me (the recent oak machinists box was nice, but that is an Xmas gift...)

What I'm REALLY thankful for is NOT picking up any dreaded viruses while doing this, and that all the close calls my family had didn't turn into illness (My mom (90...), my daughters, and we now have our fingers crossed for my brother who is quarantining after going to look at a house and the owners (not present) came up infected...

And Happy T-day everyone! Stay Safe!

Of course, that's so obvious, I overlooked it. With two kids in school (hybrid), my wife working at a hospital, and me in a critical role having to go to work a few times a week, this is nothing to take for granted!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

In regard to Outlaw’s post, the virus hit my fiancee last week. Oddly, the symptoms nothing more than a cold, and in my opinion a weaker cold too. Chest and nasal congestion, cough, loss of taste and smell, and bad taste. A major sign was taste being affected, as in things like coffee were tasting bad, she said.

She got a test last week that came back positive. We went together for another rapid test, and got results in minutes. Hers positive, myself negative. I thank the Lord I haven’t gotten sick.

This did get me two weeks off from work. I had to let them know, even though I’d already been at work for several days when she started feeling sick.

She too, had gone to work at the start, not thinking much of it until taste was getting weird.
She works two jobs. Job 1 as a teacher, where several kids had already been out sick and going home sick for several weeks before she came down with it, other faculty had been sick or in quarantine. The school and health dept. have done what they have to do.

Second job as a server/bartender, cases had been turning up among patrons and staff lately. They shut down several days.

We’ve been quarantined to the house. The health dept. checks in each day with me.

She’s doing great though, cooking dinner today for the two of us today. We had groceries dropped off outside the other day to fill in what we needed.

I felt bad earlier when a neighbor that we rarely see knocked at the door with some cookies he made, and wanted to wish us a Happy Thanksgiving. I talked through the window, and told him I can’t open the door.

Anyhow, she continues to get better, with taste improving somewhat just in time for today. Me, I have plenty to keep me busy around here for the rest of my staying in.

Stopped by a pawn shop that's outside of my normal route. I had little expectations walking in but was surprised by the amount of loose tools. They definitely dump the contents of tool boxes into big bins and set the boxes out with big price tags. The hand tools are a cash sale.

I picked out these for $10.

In terms of the pick I am most thankful for- I am super excited for this craftsman stack... I have been trying to find one for years with no luck locally. I think Bmwrd0 finally got tired of me complaining and sold it to me [emoji23]I need to finish cleaning and polishing it. The 10 drawer top chest is in the process of a restoration because it was spray bombed
IMG_0924.JPG

I also had a family member give me my grandfather’s letterman’s sweater from 1932. It was his freshman year so it only has 1 stripe on the arm. Aside from a couple of tiny moth holes
In the back it is in really good shape! This wasn’t really a pick since it came from a family member but they surprised me with it and I was beyond elated to have it.

One sale today as advertised on Estate sales.net in my neighborhood. Seller is good guy, runs a good sale . Spent 30-40 minutes in live due to COVID restrictions. Spent another 30 minutes perusing the wares to come up with this lot:

Also went curbside at HomeDepot and picked up 2/3rds of theDewalt toughbox stack, the wheeled unit gets delivered later. BF pricing and a desire to try it as I move my tools jobsite to jobsite frequently. It seems to be logical as my laser cases adjoin...we will see if I get anymore organized and efficient.LOL

From an estate/garage sale, I picked up the following:
Starrett 6" dial caliper
Plomb Los Angeles Pulley Puller Set with three sets of jaws
3 1/2" vise with captured swivel base wrench. I do not see any marks yet, but since this owner had only American vintage tools, I need to do a little research to figure out what it is.
Stiletto socket chisel
numerous Plomb, Proto and Snap-on deep socket and regular sockets
Proto and Craftsman ratchets
Plomb and Duro-chrome breaker bars, 10" extensions, wrenches
Herbrand wrenches
Bonney, Blackhawk, and other old double box-ends
Riverside curved box end wrench
vintage Palm Grip Drive ratchet
some other little items
and that excellent burl wood cane with a 90° handle, that I will finish and use (just coming off knee surgery). Thankful!
