i see there's at least a few more interested.

no promises, but if you missed out on the group buy, post how many you'd like.
if there's enough interest, i'll consider ordering another batch. i don't want to collect money etc beforehand though.

there's also https://www.jensputzier.com/knipex-...om-mini-pliers-wrench-chrome-plated-5210.html

low stock, but should have more in jan.

JP's price is 19.99 each plus 19.99 shipping. not bad if you get a few.
for three, (3*19.99+19.99)/3 = 26.65usd each

I would be interested, probably for all 3 types just because.

nothing else to do while we wait for these openers, lol.

giordano's is good. i think it's a good, archetypical example of chicago deep dish.
another decent example could be art of pizza.

both of those beat lou's deep dish which i am not a big fan of.

my favorite chicago deep dish is still pequod's, but it is not the standard style.

nice pic, thanks for sharing. i'll have to check out geraci's if i'm ever there.

I'm from STL so I am wired to hate all things Chicago. It's all in jest though. I tried giordano's and felt it was more of a casserole than a pizza. I'll have to remember to try pequod's the next time I am in town.

GO BLUES. GO CARDS

Thanks again for putting this together and managing it all.

Ordered mine direct as per OP, it was quicker but probably the most expensive bottle opener I have ever seen.
These two were just over $100 CAD with shipping, duties and tax... all I can do is laugh and open a beer!!48b34e16883333787a55b80f7a8c816b.jpg

there's more to chicago pizza than deep dish, and there's way more to pizza than chicago. my favorite pizza might be neapolitan style (the style of naples, italy), but it's hard to pick just one. :)

sweet!!

hey, could you do me a huge favor and tell me the dimensions (LxWxH) and weight of one bottle opener inside of its little knipex box?

basically the dimensions and weight of a single boxed unit as-sold.

that's info i really could have used when i was shopping around for shipping, but it would still be nice to know now.

I did get to have pizza in Napoli a few years ago. While it was good. I don’t remember it because of all the red wine!!!

I would unfortunately only be in for one. Much easier to justify at $25ish than $40. If there is another round I would be in. If not, I'm not too broken up about it.

Regarding Chicago pizza, Lou Malnati's is by far my favorite. Anytime we had a reason to go to Chicago we would come back with a half baked pizza for dinner. I haven't tried some of the others mentioned, but compared to Giordano's, Gino's East, and Uno's it's at the top of the list.

Ironically now that we have one just down the road from us in Wisconsin the novelty has worn off knowing we can get it at any time.

i was going to wait to share these updates until i knew more because i didn't want to worry you unnecessarily, but since you asked...

sorry to say that they have me on the ropes, guys. i'm fighting to make it happen for everyone.

1) still out of stock at JP (the backup plan)

2) knipexfans is acting like they don't want to sell to me

12/28/20: orders placed and paid for

1/4/21: received confirmation emails and invoices but no further movement

note: all of the following correspondence was in GERMAN lol, but i share the english translations below:

1/6/21:
Knipex Rep A said:
Since you have ordered a large number of bottle openers from us, we would ask you to tell us your purpose for the bottle openers in an email.

Unfortunately, we cannot send your goods to you before we have this.

We ask for your understanding!

hm, hard to know what to say since i don't know what answer they're looking for. i decided to just go with the truth because i'm assuming that they want to sell these directly to fans, and i know that they don't offer these to dealers through the normal discounted dealer program.

1/6/21:
pizza said:
Thank you for your message.

I'm getting these bottle openers for my friends and family. I am friends with many tool fans (especially Knipex fans) who will be happy to have them. I'm not selling these for a profit or anything.

I had previously asked about the possibility of a discount because of the quantity, but received no response. I suspect this is not possible, especially since I've already placed my order, but hopefully it doesn't hurt to ask again.

1/9/21:

Will there be a problem with my orders? Can you please give me an estimated time of arrival?

My friends and I are really looking forward to these bottle openers. Please let me know if you have any questions.

1/11/21: REFUND ISSUED :shocking: :shocking: :shocking: :shocking:

We regret to inform you that we are currently unable to deliver your orders.

In the next few days we will transfer your money back to you for orders.

We ask for your understanding!

May I ask for the specific reason, please? What mistake did I make or what policy was not followed?

This will disappoint many people. What can be done to correct this situation?

1/11/21:
Knipex Rep B said:
I hereby refer to your order. Would you be so kind as to give me your phone number once so that we can clarify this personally with your order?

Thanks in advance!

i'm not proficient enough to speak to this guy in german on the phone...

pizza said:
I am embarrassed to say that my German language skills are very poor. I am communicating with the help of a translation service (Google Translate).

Honestly, communication via email is much more convenient for me. I promise to keep our communications confidential. However, if you prefer to speak, I am willing to call you at a specific time of your choosing if you are able to speak with me in English. I do not have a German telephone number.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience but look forward to clarifying the situation.

Background: The reason for this purchase is I am getting them for friends and family who are fans of Knipex products and are lovers of tools in general. I am trying to get a specific number of them (96 in total) for a specific number of people, and I am not selling them. The reason it is split into two orders (47 bottle openers in one and 49 in another) is for logistical reasons specific to my situation.

since i said i'd keep what he says to me confidential (in case that is a concern of his), i will probably only summarize/paraphrase his responses going forward.

no response yet.

imo it sounds like they have the openers, but i need to convince them to sell them to me.
i think there's still hope, but if it doesn't work out, obviously i'll refund everyone once i'm sure the show's over.

edit:

i ended up linking them to this thread:

Hello Mr...,

For evidence of my claims, please see this link to a forum discussion:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=470011

My username is "pizza" on that page.

As I explained, we are serious tool fans. Can you please help us?

Otherwise, if you cannot help us, may I ask for the specific reason why the order was canceled? What mistake did I make or what policy was not followed?

Kind regards,

What about JP? Or if they prefer "individual" orders can we ask for combined shipping to an overseas (USA) point and distribute from there?

How about being completely honest and as a last resort link them to this thread? I'd save that as "the nuclear option."

it's not that JP prefers individual orders. i would happily buy from there, but them getting the qty we need is not a sure thing.

by the time this GB was happening, JP had like 7 in stock. i asked the owner to email me if they get more. he said he hoped to get more in jan.

but idk if that will happen. i think the product status changed from backordered to not available: https://www.jensputzier.com/knipex-...om-mini-pliers-wrench-chrome-plated-5210.html

also, it doesn't show up if you search their website anymore: https://www.jensputzier.com/search?sSearch=bottle+opener

yep, i may link knipexfans to this thread as a last resort to show them some evidence that i'm not marking them up. though i have no clue if that's the concern.

any thoughts on what knipexfans wanted to hear?

i wonder what the "magic answer" would have been for why i wanted so many bottle openers.

would they have preferred that i were a business reselling them? hrm

I wonder if it is because they see it as a popular item and they are concerned about not having enough for regular customers and worried about blowback from being “sold out” to many others.

Either way unless they have some written policy against large purchases they should honor it regardless.

I wonder if it would be better to just reach out to a Knipex rep/sales director/etc. for North America and explain the situation. There are A LOT of people in on this. It wouldn't surprise me if they would try and find a way to help you make this happen and hopefully start sending it overseas in subsequent years.

https://www.linkedin.com/company/knipex-tools-lp/people/

Right here I see the President, VP of Marketing, VP of Sales, Product Manager, and a ton more. Wouldn't hurt to shoot one of them a message and explain the situation.

I don’t see any harm in providing them with the link to this site and giving them the complete story. I’d think they would be impressed!

i'm wondering if they're intended only for the german market due to limited quantity though.

Well, they can't stop you from buying from a distributor, though I suppose they could theoretically limit supply to that distributor if they were real a-holes.

If anything, it would show them there's demand for the item, even at a much higher price than they actually go for at a retailer that has them.

I don't think there's much to lose by reaching out to someone at the Knipex USA team besides a bit of your time. Might even get some swag out of it, who knows

I haven’t read this thread in a few days. I looked to see if they were arriving yet. I am sorry to read there are issues with getting them shipped. Back on the first page, I asked about reaching out to our friends at KC Tool to see if they could help. I would hope that KC would have some pull at Knipex and help with this venture as a public service to help the GJ members.

I would hope that by sharing this thread to KNIPEX, that it would show them how many loyal customers/fans are interested in their product.

Furthermore, to show that this is not an individual / retailer trying to capitalize and profit from the sale.
