Fortunately wood is a four letter word in my shop so I have not gone down the Festool rabbit hole.

I do now have a nice selection of mechanical pencils and Moleskin graph paper note books. Having a ready place to document things in the shop has saved my *** a time or two.

I couldn't quite justify the extra AU$160 for the aluminium base (or $260 for the granite!), so I made myself a timber base with some doubled up 18mm marine ply...

I'm very happy with it. It feels really nice to use, and knowing that I'm getting a perfect repeatable angle really appeals to my inner perfectionist!

That's exactly how mine is set up, I just clamp it to a table or bench. Works great!

I appreciate the desire for a sharp knife, but $400?...I'm not as skilled as most of you are, but I think I could make one if I wanted it that badly (I don't) so I know most of you could make it. I couldn't make a mechanical pencil, nor a battery drill, nor a circular saw, nor even a silicone mat, but this Wicked Edge thing?..I'm pretty sure even I could make that with a couple of parts from McMaster-Carr and an old square rod BBQ spit.

I recently picked up a Wicked Edge Go. I'm pretty good at sharpening on a stone but my OCD for wanting to keep the factory edge drove me to get one. My favorite gun store has a pro model and would sharpen knifes for a fee, so I knew how good they worked. I caint totally blame Gregor but he should get some credit. Luckily Festool isn't sold locally.... I might have bought a new mechanical or three lately!

Between Lil Scorpion and Gregor they convinced me to seriously look at Festool. So far I have a TS 55 track saw (love it) and a RO 125 sander (like it). Many thanks to them both for their inspiration and sharing.

Sterling, I bought a much cheaper Kamikoto set that has a similar triangular handle design. I can't personally vouch for any lefty stuff but both Shun and Kamikoto websites indicates they are for both left and right handed use. I bought the Kamikoto set to try the single bevel Japanese knife design (I highlight the single bevel design because many people don't like it). It takes a little getting used to and a different sharpening angle but I frequently grab the Nakiri vegetable knife and utility knife. I'm sure Shun and Festool products perform better than my stuff but parting with more than a single $100 bill is hard for me. Thankfully I don't come across $500, $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000 bills.

This is the Kamikoto set that Amazon sells for $125 (I took a few days to put it in the cart).
