This thread needs to be a sticker. SO many of us will use Matt if we know he's doing this. I'd GLADLY pay him whatever his asking price is for these stickers if I can ever find/afford a Baldor or a big Craftsman block grinder

How difficult would it be to make one for a vintage Porter Cable 508 saw? Mine is missing the sticker on the blade guard but it's the same as the one pictured below.

Matt,

I heard about you last night through a YouTube video, and was super-stoked to see your first post included work on a Craftsman 397.19360. I just picked up the same grinder (and stand) today for $10, and the thing runs like a dream. Would like to restore the unit with new bearings, paint, etc. I would love to have one of your new labels for my grinder. If you're willing to help me, could you fill me in on the process? Also, can you make the "Sears Best" label (mine is missing)?

Thanks,
Shane

Damn Bundles! You stole that thing!! I just paid $110 for this one. And it's in worse shape. I hope Matt can send me a label for the resto that is forthcoming.

It's all there including the stand and runs fine.

That’s an amazing deal. It will look great once restored. Here’s the label.

$110 for a 1HP is still a great deal. These often sell for $300 plus.

Here’s the label.

Matt,

I appreciate the quick-turn on both labels. From the moment I picked up the grinder I had plans to "eventually" restore it to original condition. I had no idea/plan on how I would replace the label, and expected that to be the long pole in the tent issue. I was shocked when I discovered your work in a YouTube video. Funny that within a 24 hour period of picking up this grinder, I had already found this post...and you already created both needed labels. Thanks man, you're a tremendous asset to this forum.

Eagerly waiting for USPS to deliver the labels.

Here’s a 3/4 HP label I made this morning.

And one I made a couple weeks ago with a small mistake that I only caught after label was applied.

Matt can you make labels for a walker turner and a delta rockwell drill press?

Sorry to hear about your previous attempt to get a new label. I read your other posts and it was part of the motivation for me making labels for free. Glad I can help you out.

Here is a new label sublimated onto brushed aluminum 0.040" thick.

5dc21a93488e5b5abdf26be08fcd69e3.jpg

This was the most challenging label so far for a variety of reasons. First the photo you took was slightly distorted so I had to use some Photoshop magic to remove the distortion to get accurate measurements. Then I could redraw it in vector format.

It is printed directly onto aluminum plate via a sublimation process which means the ink is in the metal, not just on the surface. It will not fade or wear. The only way to get the print off is to scrape off a layer of metal.

There is a trim line around the border but I did not trim it for you. Do you have a band saw or a metal shear to trim it to size? If not I'll see what I can do there finish it up before sending it you.

I left the model number and serial number fields blank so you can metal stamp them (it didn't seem right to print the numbers that were originally stamped).

I would be happy to do more of these and found that a purpose built sublimation printer is about $400. I already have the heat press. If enough folks need reproduction metal labels and can contribute towards the printer, then I can provide the labels at no additional cost. I never intended to ask for any compensation for these labels but if there are 20 folks that need a label and each contributes $20 then I would be able to make labels for everyone for a while. (there is a small cost for the supplies which I should be able to cover)

Matt, I have one of these 115.7575 grinders from 3 of 54. Would love one of these lables and would gladly pay in excess of the price you recommended.

Paid too much for this one but, there just isn't alot to pick from down here. When guys down here talk with their buddies about working with woods, they are deciding whether to use the driver or the three wood.:lol_hitti

Matt is already working on the label. This will be a full disassembly and then Matts handiwork will top it off. I forgot to ask if it will be an overlay or a sublimation label. Either way it will look much better that it does now.

Do you make labels for any other old tools like from Delta, Porter Cable, Rockwell, Skil or Van Dorn?

I can make labels for any equipment. Just send me a photo and I'll see what I can do. Right now I'm still limited to adhesive back vinyl labels with an abrasion resistant lamination, but hoping soon to be able to do aluminum.

Making a batch right now to make labels that have been requested over the last two weeks. Usually I'm faster than that, but its been a busy few weeks.

Thanks again for doing this for the group. I suppose you can also do Lista and Vidmar stickers. I need a few of them for ones I'm restoring.

Another method of reproducing labels is to print them in reverse on clear film with a laser printer and glue them with clear glue on a piece of aluminum similar to the original.
the advantage is it doesn't require any exotic equipment. Color laser printers are common these days and clear printable sheets are at OfficeMax or other similar places. The image can be a picture of a good label or a drawing created in a drawing program (I favor CorelDRAW).
Not as good as what mattblast turns out, but relatively quick and easy for a one-off.

I need a label exactly like the set you made for the Rockwell buffer, I will pay for them to contribute to making them on aluminum. Do you have to create vector art for all of these?

I have already created vector files for several Rockwell labels. Post a photo of yours and I’ll see if I have it.

I purchased tag from MRO supply. You need to call them up to order it and it runs about $50. You can find them online.

You have to be very specific when ordering the label or it will not be what you expect.

You need to request that they make the label using the NP3118 blank (if they use the NP0234 the factory will scratch out the UL symbol!).

Also, it is customary that the order number be shown as the Cat No of the label, but you can request that the original cat no be shown (8107W in my case).

aa4825d3c435b65c631ccf991aedd388.jpg
(Default cat no on first label and lots of data is wrong)

474ba34136d5fe795eae6ee7adf35e50.jpg
(UL scratched out intentionally on second and cat no still wrong)

So it took 3 tries and a call to the factory but I got a good label and they let me keep the defects. MRO supply was good to work with but they have to drop ship these from Baldor’s Arkansas factory. Each label took about a week to get.
I recommend sending them an email with a photo of the label and an exact list of what data should be used in each field.

The label comes with 2 drive screws.

New to this board (my first post) and seeing a lot of sensible knowledge here.
I am restoring an Baldor 812RE and would like a new data plate as well to go with the new paint. Do you know if the yellow type you show is the only type they produce? Mine is has a red bar across the top and mostly aluminum below.

Welcome to the forum! Can you post a photo of the label you have? The data plate with UL logo will come scratched off so it’s better to request the one without that logo as it will look better without the modification.

I was able to make a couple aluminum grinder labels. It’s not direct printing, but instead I printed on a clear vinyl which was then laminated to make it scuff resistant and that was applied to a piece of aluminum.

Color comes from the aluminum. One sheet is aluminum color (silvery) and the other is gold. Both are slightly brushed but that isn’t visible in the final product.

It’s very time consuming to make them this way. After applying to the aluminum plate I had to cut out to fit, round the corners and punch the holes (1/8”)

I was able to make the two Craftsman labels.

af4dde93ee4870e51623df230f24b06e.jpg

To make the Rockwell I need to know label size and what the text at the left shows (“Rockwell No.” or “Model No.”)

I’m guessing the size is 1”x4”

Made the Rockwell label. It’s 1x4 and the mystery word is “Series”

I even punched the data into place. Had to leave an area cut out so I could punch. (That won’t be needed once I can print directly on metal)

bdd041c4488bdc97f3331f4925323853.jpg

This was punched with 1/8” numbers. It may look better with my 3/32” set.

Had a spare so I just redid in 3/33”

Matt, I'm looking to restore this articulated lamp. Do you already have a crowntop logo image that you could do in red? Image w measurement is mine, the other I pulled off the internet. Pm me with your fee and I'll take care of it. Your work is excellent, thank you for all you've done.

Here is a new label I made

46921d1183ec56c5f0ae982efa52334a.jpg

This is made from scratch. The text is printed then laminated and applied to a sheet of aluminum which I’ve embossed with the model number. The edges are then trimmed to size and corners rounded then the holes are punched.

Not 100% accurate but very close. The original was direct printed on the aluminum and the embossing on the original is 0.2” while mine is 0.25”. That makes it a little harder to align the embossed numbers in the allotted space.

The embossing machine is over almost 70 years old and needed a good cleaning to work well. Wasn’t hard to restore it, but it must weigh 200lbs so it took some effort to move it around.

Excellent job Matt, very impressive. Cant wait to see when your metal printer is up and working.

Your label above is the best and closest reproduction example made of a vintage label I've seen.
