I feel so inadequate now with all this caster talk, I was slightly proud to have 6 inch ones but you folks are talking and showing your double digit size casters.

Here’s a bigger one at the scrap yard. I didn’t buy these as I was on a mission for another part. These were about 12-14”.



Found another float, but caster broken.


I’m in the planning stage of building a vise stand and decided I wanted to be able to adjust the height. I’m also going to make it able to roll, the plan for the casters. The stand will have a retractable caster plate that’ll be extended when moving the stand and retract casters so base is on floor.

After some serious brainstorming and Shorty sketching up renderings of my metal thoughts, there was a lot of back and forth ideas.

I had a thought pop into my head of using a drill press table type of a gear rack and spur gear, just something a little heavier that the typical drill press.

Shorty added the idea of making the moving portion of the vise mount also travel down far enough to push casters down. This just underlined the need of a bi-direction lift mechanism.

So, I set out for a big *** DP, lathe or whatever I could find to harvest these parts.

I spent my lunch break wandering around this scrap yard, asked the owner if he had anything like I was looking for as I couldn’t find any thing.

He had one of his guys take me out to a building out back.



After climbing over stuff to get inside, the last corner had this.

The remains of a pretty good size lathe.
I looked it over and it had the goods. Gear rack is the upper piece in picture

And the gears.
I look over to see what I’d be up against and to see if I had the tools to do it. Didn’t really have everything needed, but why let something like that get in the way.
Go get my tool bag and drink, gloves, rags etc. here we go.
The track was attached with slotted head bolts, luckily the biggest flat screwdriver was a square shank and a adjustable wrench got these right out.
Getting the apron/carriage off was a different story. I conferred with Mac and he though one this big would have a two piece apron, he knows his big lathes. Found more of the slotted bolts, but since I didn’t act on my thoughts that I need to put my hammer impact in the truck, they didn’t budge.

I was able to get the lead screw and other shafts out of the way.
Then I tripped on this.

A 5’ spud bar.
So I managed to coax the apron loose, but just couldn’t quite get the gears I needed out.
It was then I spotted the bolts on the opposite side of apron, bolts that held a flat bar that held the apron to the ways. Imagine that.
Did I mention that the lathe base was laying on its side?
Once I removed the bolts, it was loosy lucy.
Still had to pry, shim with scraps of pipe to finally get the damn thing off.
It’s off and dead on the floor.

The gear still would not come out due to the fact the apron is supposed to be taken apart.
So some precision surgical tapping with a 2 lb hammer and a 5’ pry bar, I got it out.

I loaded the smalls in the tool bag. I had tie wraps and combined the gear and trac in one piece and made a tie wrap handle to carry.

It was 45 lbs and $14!

It took about a 1-1/2 hour to do,but I’m happy to of found. Now I just need to figure out a layout of gears to make it all work.

I had a blast.

Weird thoughts like that enter my mind when in places like this.
The yard guy was telling me one of the others would go back there by himself.

I tested the stability of the lathe laying on its side, it’s was laying on some kind of a container.
You all know if that thing shifted and pinned my arm down that my cell phone would just be out of reach or I’d knock it out of reach trying to get.

I had a blast getting the parts. If I get to retire, I’m going to travel around just hunting through junk yards.

Layed out the track, gears and handle that I took off. Guess I’m lucky, should have a working mechanism without having to add much. I wasn’t sure if everything was there due to all the gears that was in the apron.



I cleaned up the gears today, they had some nasty grease and god knows what on them that was hard to clean off my hands. While I was scraping and degreasing, I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of grease, how long has it been there, the old guys that lubed it, what and where this lathe was used for.



It’s a big piece of the puzzle, on to engineering a fit!

Worked on getting the base plate for the torch hose reel attached to the wall today.


Didn’t have the correct length lag bolts, so I made them adjustable.

My friend Yale gave me a lifting hand today.
Mounting this on the wall as high into the trusses as it will fit.

I rigged up this little 1/4 ton electric hoist to lift the Hanney torch hose reel. It’s all I can do to lift off the bench.

A C2 Wilton should be enough counter weight.

I ran the chain on the hoist through the reel frame, hooked to a chain that attached to the outside of the frame. I initially just had a bar on bottom frame for hoist to hook to, but it moved too much for my liking.

Half way up! Even with the electric hoist, it still was a challenge at times get it up in place, it wasn’t a even lift and it snagged everything on the way up.

In place.

I’ll finish connecting the hoses. It’ll be put to use here soon with a couple projects.

In other happenings, I knocked a hacksaw from its spot in the trusses while doing the reel and it reminded me I need one in the truck tool box. The saw has storage in the tube, I put a couple spare blades in and marked it so my dumb *** wouldn’t forget I had blades.
I just don’t use one that often anymore.

I never thought of storing my blades in the hacksaw.. I am going to have to look at mine and see if it I can do that as well.

In my recent scrap yard endeavors, I figured a hack saw would be the next tool I’d figure out I needed when in the middle of 50 acres. I was thinking of a way to keep a few blades in truck tool box so I’d remember I had them, realizing the saw had built in storage. It even has a machine screw to clamp down on them to help with the rattling.

The hoist I bought of a FB MP listing. Like a idiot, I should of taken the 1/2 ton one he had for the same price. This one paid for itself today.

I’m not even sore..... yet.

I just have a couple of hack saws hanging off the trusses, I have no ceiling, just open trusses.

Thanks on the reel, I’m doing pretty good, I haven't had it laying around a full two years yet. It’ll make life easier when I go to use.

The dog is a Catahoula mixed with something, but predominantly Houla. We got her from one of the local rescues. We had been looking for a little bit and when we went in there and seen her, I knew the search was over.

She’s my shop dog and loves being out there. We now have a Heeler but the Houla kinda makes her stay the distance at times. They both run to the door when I pick up the shop keys.

My Irish Setter would crawl under the car with me when I was out in the garage, so I totally get grabbing the keys.

Wasn’t even looking for sales, I swear!
A “Mans sale” was posted, these cabinets caught my interest.


Vertical drawer cabinets, heavy duty, but lighter than a Vidmar.
Loaded these up as I had to get down the road for work. This sale was a estate of a marine mechanic, lots there. I spotted two Vidmars, but no time to mess with, and they were wanting to sell the pair with contents, which I definitely don’t need, just the empty cabs is all I was after.

So, later in the day I talk with them, they wouldn’t budge on the contents and I ended up buying as they sat, but at a good deal.

So here we are today.

I have found over the years of unloading these cabinets, using wide straps make lifting these pretty stable, this one is still loaded.

Picked up paint can shaker, I figured with how long it’ll take me to get everything painted, this will come in handy to break up the solid cans of paint.

Love the safety decals nowadays.

The cord was in bad shape and I finished it off on the way home. I tell ya, the plug couldn’t stand a little skipping along the road.

The short Vidmar will reside in the shed and will house my short steel cuts, pad eyes and whatever little pieces so that it’s all in one place. Of course it’s going to be 1/2” too high to fit under the lowest pallet rack shelf.

I forgot to tell part of the story of the seller.
While strapping down the cabs yesterday, I overhear him talking on the phone “just change the ad then”.

He then tells me some lady messaged to complain about the sale being called a mans sale!
Can you imagine? A closed down shop, just tools and equipment, how dare they call it a mans sale.

I’m fine, I’m fine, didn’t mean to scare everyone.

The vertices did jump out at me, there made by Watson Co. Each self has a slight lip on the edge. I was envisioning these at eye level or so, Shorty came up with the idea of using for a welding cabinet, so we’ll see how they end up. My plan is to leave them on the dolly so their easy to roll around while I make 3-4 plans for them. I didn’t mention I bought the aluminum dolly that there setting on at the same time. I’m getting good, buy cabinets and buy a dolly to set them on!

His girlfriend was managing the FB post, so I’m assuming she wanted to make the change, this guy didn’t strike me as the type who gave a $**** what people thought.
It was two brothers, one was Ozzy Osborn, the other Ernest Hemingway.

Those vertical cabinets are very interesting. They could solve some difficult storage challenges... I'm picturing them up higher, but in a spot you still want/need a pull-out drawer. Certainly would be perfect for cans of something.
