Dodge, I think that's an old fishing tackle box? No clue who made it.
The rippled paint also common on metal tackle boxes of that era . As well seemed to be a standard size/features among a few makers,,this a UNION Tm.

A rainy Thursday morning had only 3 sales to go to. Two were a bust.
The third was a spot only 2 miles from my place.
The fella is a retired heavy equipment mechanic that has street rods as a hobby.
I just like to look at his cars. He lives in trailer, but his shop is nice.
He had a lot of large wrenches laid out, but still a little rich for my wallet. (told him I'd be back Saturday to see if he was hungry by then).
All good natured.
Anyhow I did pick up these.
MAC Detroit diesel set $5.
SK pliers and 18" Diamond Horseshoe adjustable at $10.00 each.

Picked up these three old guys today:

I put the Craftsman under my lathe, it fits perfectly in the space below, the machinist's chest will either get restored and it will replace one of my Gerstners, or it will get flipped quickly. The topmost box, well, I kind of had to take it for the deal to work:
51435191989_28b24e3621_b.jpg
$80 for all of them. Sadly the Crafty and machinist chests don't have front panels, but that is ok at the price.
ohh man , I know that bell system really speaks to you! Nice pull on those 3 chests!

I traveled a long way for this small haul. Eating breakfast, petting the dog and writing down the directions--something had to give--and it was the directions. Traveled about 15 miles down the wrong Interstate before I realized my error. Backtracking added 45 miles and put me at the sale a half hour late and there were lots of tools on the sold table. Grrrr.

09 Sep 21-1.jpg09 Sep 21-1a.jpg09 Sep 21-1b.jpg09 Sep 21-1c.jpg

Four nice S-K Chrome 1/4d sockets in a beat S-K box with no markings left. The later S-K ext, CM & Husky sockets were in there also.
1/2d Indestro speeder.
Plomb 5461 Ext
CM 1/4d =v= Sliding T and Tommy Bar
The Tubular Micrometer Co. 1-2" Mic. This company later styled their name Tumico. The mic was completely rusted. I'm about halfway finished with the cleanup.
Total $8 plus 1/3 tank of gas...

I've been collecting tools for a long time and I have made a few displays at the auto repair shops I've run. So word got around that I collect and restore old tools. One guy called me up, said his dad had passed a few months back, and20210909_231556.jpg
he wanted to share those tools he didn't want to keep. I said it would be an honor. I received five paper ream boxes LOADED with old tools. This is the score of a lifetime!

I hit two sales and a thrift store today, and I think I did pretty well
51441695228_480a35e18b_b.jpg
Stuff from both sales is mixed in, but I will point things out by each stop. The second stop was mostly furniture of a fake deco type that I really dislike, but I notice the garage pic had some interesting things. I wouldn't have stopped, but it was on my way home mostly. And I am glad I did! Here I got a Fluke model 12, a Starrett tri square, Stanley electrics screwdriver, and the Stuartevant-Richmont torque screwdriver. $7 for all of that.

The first sale was an enormous amount of old tools and garage stuff, but the prices were all over. Hand saws were listed at over $100 (ha!) but other stuff was surprisingly cheap, and they would make deals if you were willing to spend some money. I picked up the Stanley **** gauge in the box, Kraueter metric set, Proto LA cabinet driver, a Talbot Mundy book, and the vintage '60s Craftsman ratchet rebuild kit.

Also, I needed a box of some sort to carry the stuff around while I kept looking, so I picked this up:
51440693197_cdb807e409_b.jpg
51442192989_69cc915057_b.jpg
All of that was $60, as he cut me a deal on first-day prices.

The very last stop was at a local thrift store that has interesting books a lot of the time, and here I picked up a Zane Grey baseball juvenile, The Shortstop, and the early engineering text on steam engines of all sorts, written when these monsters were still in use before the first world war. And, as I mentioned earlier, the Talbot Mundy book, probably his most famous as there was a movie made of it. Mundy was in the same vein of interwar adventure writers like John Buchan, Robert E Howard, HP Lovecraft, and many other greats, but he has disappeared from all but the shelves of weird fiction enthusiasts.

Definitely a deep low pressure region surrounding our host right now. The Union alone is well worth that, even if it wasn’t pristine. Nice work.

msgt and Beemer both **** pretty bad in my opinon. Can't get a better price than free and the chests that Beemer is finding would give me a coronary if I ever ran across one in the wild!

I bought a box off Craiglist, got the backstory which is always nice. The guy was getting rid of the last of his dad's tools, apparently Dad was a mechanic at a pretty well known dealer up here in the PNW. A mechanic with the same last name as the sign out front it turns out. It's engraved on a few of the tools in the box.

Anyway, I have been looking for an old Craftsman box for a while, I'm pretty happy with this one for 30 bucks. Pretty minimal rust and everything including the drawer lock seems to work as intended. The pile of tools inside was just a bonus.

IMG_3285.jpg

Still needs some cleaning, I haven't even started yet.

IMG_3286.jpg

Here's the pile of tools that was inside after most of it went in the Evaporust. The container in the back was intended for goodwill but I'm having second thoughts about the punches. The container in front is stuff I still need to clean. Pile on the workbench is fresh out of the Evaporust.

Msgtsmith, Beemer and Saukit all ****!!

Question for Saukit: If his name is the same as the dealership, how does he differentiate between his tools and the shop's??
Ha, good question! Apparently he was one of the brothers of the owner, I’m not sure if he had a stake in the business or just worked there.

Seems guys are rocking and rolling already this weekend. bmwrd0, love the Kraeuter metric wrench set. Don't see those everyday and metric no less. Nice Union box also, looks in pretty nice shape given its age what with it being Rochester N.Y era rather than Leroy N.Y. Well done (y).

Saukit, nice score on the Craftsman tool box. Been looking for a top box from that era and they are tough to come by, great find !

Well, Mike, the thread is a "what did you find today" kind of thing, so, no, it really isn't appropriate, especially as there are a couple of places on Garage Journal to do place something like this.

There is the Craftsman toolbox thread, along with the general Wanted section on the front page. I wish you good luck on finding that mid-box, though, and please hang around and show us when you do!

Here is a little Garage Sailing by remote. My GF was out and hit an estate sale while I was stuck on video calls. She started taking happy snaps of the stuff in the garage, and sending them to me. The big general stuff wasn’t catching my eye, but saw the little glint of red at the bottom of the pic, and asked her to look harder at it.

received_1045849122625081-X3.jpg

She grabbed that, and said it was a box that said Snap On, and sent a pic with a few tools inside, I could read Snap-on on a couple. She took that and an empty Union metal tackle box sized up front, I said not more than $10 each. She was quoted $5 and $15, I said leave the Union behind, even tho the average was still OK.

So here is the box, just average paint, but no real damage.

PXL_20210911_003833944-X3.jpg

And the contents.: The two sockets and extension on the left are Snap-on, including a 9/16” 1/4” drive socket, which I don’t have in any flavor. The other is a 1/4" MSV socket, which according to Snapmom elsewhere, V is mostly military and won't be found in a catalog. The extension is an MVX6. The stuff on the right is Par-X, something I’d never heard of before today. But a quick google of garage journal for Par-X brought all the info I need to know. So if anyone needs a couple Par-X to complete a set, these are 1/4” drive, 7/32, 9/32, 11/32, 3/8, and a UE6 extension. The black on the bottom of the box seems to be a heavy layer of dried grease, included free with any socket request.

PXL_20210911_003759164-X3.jpg

Poking around CollectingSnapon is in my future, tracking down ages, and figuring out what belongs here.

Edit: added a bit after some research

Even though Shiftless is in Connecticut, he emailed me this morning about a local estate sale. It is being put on by a company known for long lines so we went an hour before closing. We got right in and checked out the garage and basement. I managed to pretty much ignore the big mess of early Corvair engine parts and grabbed a few interesting (to me) tools. I also managed to almost ignore the ‘62 Corvair Monza convertible under ripped up covers in the driveway, as I am not interested in restoring another one. Here is the Craigslist ad.

That Coleman camp table . . . WOW!

Ditto... don't know how I missed that the first time!

I don't recall shorty mugs at A&W. But, it's been many decades since I've been to one.

Mike

Man i was about a week behind! (Work was way too many hours this week!)

SO much suckage in that time, I couldn't begin to pin them all down!

MSGT and Mike - Yeah that Coleman table was a LONG time coming. and a great deal to boot!

On the A&W mug I left one behind a week or so prior, as the lady wanted $30! :wtf: This was FAR more reasonable! I also got a tall one cheap, and cleaned both - their in the freezer now...

Tomorrow looks desolate - NOTHING worth leaving the house for so far...

I had to work and didn't get to any sales today until mid-afternoon. One was a bust, but I know the seller, and he said the tools will be coming out in the spring. When I asked about tools, he wanted to know what type. I said "mechanics tools, P&C, Plomb, Blackhawk" he thought there were several Plomb "sets." So there is hope for the future!

The other sale was well picked-over by the time I got there. The seller said when he opened, the crowd "descended like locusts!" I don't know how they overlooked the stuff I found. His prices were not cheap, but they were reasonable.

Snap-on speeder, Starrett rule, Stanley wood level, Penens sockets off to the right, a Herbrand adaptor, and a Vlcheck DOE.

Is anyone else NOT getting new post Alerts for this thread? It's the only thread the Alert system is missing for me for some reason. I see it and it's bold (meaning, new posts) when I check my Watched list. And in the General Discussion forum. But I'm not getting Alerts for it like other threads.

Went to a sale this morning of a guy who sold house and was moving south to a beach area. Did a lot of mechanical work, and had tools, parts, ****** hoist and may even sell the lift in garage.
Picked up this box of miscellaneous sockets. An SK Wayne extension, Easco extension, CMAN ratchet V-43784, MAC Crowfoot and unnamed adapter. Mixture of 6 point and 12 point, from "SP". Gear Wrench, Stanley, Husky, Taskforce, Indestro and CMAN. CMAN has a mix of G, upsidedown G, V, VV, G1, G2, EE. Time to do some sorting. Mainly wanted the CMAN to fill out sets.

Hit an estate sale Thu afternoon. Three screwdrivers. The top black handled driver matches some others I have but isn't a duplicate. 7" linesman pliers are M. Klein & Sons. Stihl chainsaw files are unused. Husqvarna file handle will come in handy. Digging through a drawer I spotted the Model 700 & Model 1100 instruction manuals. Has anyone ever used one of these Oregon chain saw chain sharpeners? $10 for the lot.

1) neat little indestro hex drive metric socket set (missing hex stub for ratchet)
2) powr-kraft #84-3656 circle cutter w/original allen wrench; like new but box is wrecked
3) umwa local 6026 belt buckle (note: local 6026 was located in coalwood, wv - the setting for book "rocket boys." mine closed in '86)
$5 for all

(limiting purchases to avoid losing more in divorce court... - whatta downer)

Well they finally posted a CL ad for the local Flea, and ONE possible YS (which was a dud...), so a short day... Not too bad al in all despite that.

Last find first: this guy had a mad mix of things but a few older items. I saw this adn was "OK what is it?":

Interesting Markings:

Up Close:

1912 Patent? so what is it?

Opened it up and at fits glance I'm thinking "portable ashtray, maybe that's a cigar holder? - then I see the other rings...

Aha! A collapsing cup! With a handle, so good for coffee!

Three Bucks? No Brainer!

But the Big find was another place and table. This box was under the table and drew me in for a closer look...

And than I saw the tray and all the tools on the table! I immediately spotted the BE ratchet and confirmed its Long C. The sockets were NOT in the rial so I put them there to se if it looked reasonably complete...

It was an all or nothing deal she's asking $35 - Would not take $30 (so I racked the sockets to see and checked all the long C pieces...) I figured the 1/4 boxed set was a bonus, and who finds 2 breakers this old WITH the Tommy bars?

OK Deal! paid up and boxed it up! about 45ish pieces, so well under a buck each! I'm happy! the only thing that might have made this better is if this was an Amber handled set. (still hoping against hope there... - I've yet to see one piece in the wild)

Most all is Craftsman long C, but one is BE, (the right sliding Tee is Circle H) the 1/4 ratchet is an unmarked Plvmb, the plated stuff is Indestro, Blackhawk, Powrcraft, and a couple of unplated Thorsen deeps, and the 3/8 breaker is also Thorsen. Wire forming pliers are not marked. That big pin? an old Kingpin!

ALL of it is filthy with a dry dust I need to clean. Oh YES! the tag with a string? It's from Sears, marked in pencil for $21.95, and the tag has a form date of 1943!

All in all, a fun pick!
