From here on out, I am going to use an Adult Croc for scale when taking pictures. :ROFLMAO:

You just know the kids shoe was his first try but it wouldn't give people the right frame of reference so he had to get the Croc to do it proper. lol

I didn't call him out on it but I'm fairly confident he was trolling me with that as I mock him openly for the Croc's! It'd look a lot bigger with his kid's shoe on it as she's just over a year old so they're on the small side lol!

What is the area measured in BigMacs? How does that convert to refrigerators?

According to a Google search a BigMac uses a 4" bun....and the CR6Max bed is just a shade under 16" square....so I think with a bit of gentle "smushing" you could call it a 16 BigMac print area....now volumetric print area....that gets more complicated!

Logan,
How is the mini split doing? Have you had cold enough temps yet to test the heating?

Short answer... great and kinda sorta!

It's set for 68 as a starting point and haven't noticed any change in the electric bill but damn is it nice to walk out there and be comfortable at any time. Don't notice an issue with recovery after wife's car pulls in or out...I do get grouchy though if she leaves the garage door up for what feels like eons when parking so that may lead to me being in the dog house some night.

We have been warmer than average so far so the heat side hasn't gotten much of a workout...only a few nights into the 20's so far but it's maintaining things well but hasn't been tested hard

I have a Sense electric usage monitor on the house and need to make sure it's recognizing the mini properly so I can track operating costs this winter... thanks for the reminder!

I've forgotten... how's the barn workshop currently heated? And please keep all that snow up north as well :)

Right now I have a couple 7500 watt electric resistance heaters (way too expensive to run full time). I’m thinking dual head 36k mini split but trying to decide if I need a hyper heat model.

I had a similar mental debate between the Mitsu hyper heats and the Mr Cool. In the end with my smaller space, lower wind exposure on the garage door face due to the house layout and with common walls on a significant part I didn't spend the extra coin for it. My backup plan if needed is a 240v electric heater pulled off the garage panel but for that to be necessary I'm probably going to need several full days planned in the garage with sub 20 degree temps to potentially need it.

With the length of your space I think the dual heads would be good, I'd probably have to scratch out in Excel some "what if's" on electric costs/usage between the options and what the payback of the hyper heat might be.

Ugh....one of those weekends that hasn't gone anywhere close to plans....oh well.

In good news...continue to love OctoPrint so thanks to the Everything 3D Printer thread and especially @slodat for preaching the good words and getting me off the can on that one....so much handier!

octo1.JPG

Was supposed to be back visiting family this weekend, but after a note from kids daycare that a staff member in the 6 month old's room tested positive for what shall not be named....that got shelved. Fortunately no symptoms in this household yet....so we'll see what Monday brings

Spent a bit of time on Saturday trying to chase down why the plugs at the master bath vanity no longer worked as of that afternoon. Thought they were fed off the under sink GFCI for the whirlpool...nope. No obvious wiring issue when pulled faceplates....so after an hour I gave up and left it for later. Later became this AM when helping the 3 yr old wash up in the powder room bath(directly below the master bedroom) I noticed that GFCI was tripped....well hell! They wouldn't do that....yup...sure did. Fed the master bath vanity outlets off a GFCI on a different floor...grrrr. At least I found it and will be printing labels for the upstairs face plates later today on the label maker...

Got settled into the garage during the golden hour or 2 after lunch to watch the Chiefs beat up on the Raiders while doing some organizing and was interrupted in the first 5 minutes by a request to print the Christmas Cards.....yes dear. Now I've fought with the printer(which was already acting up) for the last 1.5 hrs to eventually get it going....oh well it makes SWMBO happy right?

Well no rest for the wicked or the weary....I fit one of those.....toddler is back awake it appears so maybe I can convince her to help Daddy in the garage this afternoon so I can still get some time in there while keeping her out of Momma's hair.

Few misc things accomplished...

The first batch of Xmas card envelops came off the printer...79 of them....about 100 more...ugh

Future proofed the bathroom so hopefully neither I or the wifey forget this:
20211212_214318.jpg

Amd put some new anti slip tread tape on the garage stairs. Had this crappy, undersized plastic tread cover that was coming off and too narrow which resulted in a bigger trip hazard then preventing. I didn't want the super aggressive 40 grit stuff with little feet so this was an attempt at something better looking and more effective than what was there

Old:
20211212_130157.jpg

20211212_154118.jpg

And installed...I promise it's there just zoom in and you can see the outline. Nice texture level...sufficient to know it's there but not "rip your feet" if you step on it barefoot. I put 2 per tread and 1 on the slab(not yet installed in this picture)...see how it works out!

Merry Christmas All! Been a **** 2 weeks with some sickness(thankfully not that one) and work and holidays so haven't been on here or in the garage much so not much to report.

Been trying to organize a bit here and there and find better homes for things....decided this axe needed a better home than where it was so it now has a place of honor:

zombie1.JPG

Once I get my laser running I intend to make some sort of "Zombie Defense" related sign for it...but for now it's hanging up with a couple of leather straps and counts as about my most productive 20 minutes in the garage over the last 2 weeks...but it's something!

Merry Christmas to all, hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday with those you choose(or were chosen to) spend time with and thanks for spending time here over the year!

Logan,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family.

Thanks and same to you!

Merry Christmas and have a joyous and Happy New Year.

Thanks! Don't get so greedy with the weather down there....I just had a team member transfer to our location in the Jacksonville area and he rubbed in the temp a bit last week :)

Santa successfully found our house, probably left me a couple extra pounds heavier but I'll survive and maybe get a bit more exercise in as a result....yeah nevermind...at least not intentionally

Got an extra present in terms of another Covid exposure via daycare with our 3 yr old last week...a classmate tested positive on Friday but fortunately my daughter has no signs at this point so hoping we're in the clear. Not trying to put this in a ditch but just getting tired of plans changing at the drop of a hat because of this exposure or that one, think it's our 3rd gathering we've had to not attend due to one of us having a recent exposure and being fortunate that we have many elderly relatives still with us that we don't want to expose...ugh. Well aware this isn't ever going back to 2019 "normal" and in many ways I don't want it to but getting tired of parts of it as we all are!

But enough of that....we got way behind on goodies/gifts for neighbors/daycare etc and so I did something I'd been wanting to try for awhile which was "legal" Apple Pie "shine"....I say shine as it's store bought liquor so all taxes paid! Seems to have turned out pretty well so far....neighbors all loved receiving it and I'm enjoying drinking my share....will wait and hear what the neighbors said about how it tastes but to me it's pretty good(if a bit strong) and was extremely easy to make so win win!
12.27 2.JPG

Santa also delivered a goodie or two for the garage...most namely this:

12.27 1.JPG

A clamp on digital read out for the chopsaw run off that rotary wheel. I've seen some nice reviews of it and some less stellar so thought I'd give it a try and put it on the list. Build seems nice, great packaging and feels stout...haven't powered it up or tried it out yet so that's still coming down the road

And in a honest moment of hubris and **** timing.....somewhere in another thread...probably @nicholam77 build i commented on how Prusa 3d printers just work...well mine decided shortly after that to take a dump and start acting like a "willfull" toddler and not doing what I ask of it. Basically has lost it's bed map or calibration as the first layer level is doing crazy things all over on files and filament that have previously run without a hitch so it's in the long, often interrupted and delayed state of a factory reset and then will start fresh with a new calibration. It seems to have started acting up a bit when I installed the Rasberry Pi based remote print monitoring OctoPrint to it...sure it's just coincidence.....so maybe over the upcoming long weekend I can get that back and going full swing and back to some garage/toolbox organizers

Logan, I make a batch of Apple Pie Shine every year. I've learned the trick is in the sugar, both brown and white...use a lot. Mine gets a bottle of spiced rum on top of the Everclear as well, and it's never over powering, has a tendency to sneak up on ya if you're a first timer.

This one had vanilla vodka added on top of the Everclear and also had what I thought was pretty significant amounts of sugar...it's only been a bit over a week since I did it but definitely mellowing a bit which is only making it more dangerous as it sneaks up even stealither on ya!

Might have to try the spiced rum next time....what's your preference....Captain....Sailor Jerry....other?

I've used both in the past, last time was some bottom shelf off brand stuff...didn't really notice a difference.

Sailor Jerry and Trader Vic's were my go to stuff when I was still drinking rum regularly.

Absolutely, sorry for not dropping it to begin with!

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/218330/grandmas-apple-pie-ala-mode-moonshine/

That was the recipe I used, had some coworkers at a different location who made it before and I'd asked for their recipe and it was that...so figured might as well start there! I made a double batch(and have supplies for another "normal" batch) and the only adjustment I made to it was actually I bumped the amount of Everclear up....it calls for 3 cups which is essentially a 750ml bottle...well I had 1.75L handles and didn't want 250 ml(roughly 1 cup) left so I used the entire handle in my double batch.

Processing wise was pretty straight forward, we previously had canned so I used our 3 or 4 gal stainless canning pot to heat it up, let it cool, add the liquor and then pour out into your desired containers. We had lots of left over canning jars/lids etc so used those as they're also a handy gifting size...my next batch I'm probably going to put into something larger and on a shelf in the pantry for a couple months then divide up after it sits and see how it does

Happy New Year! Or close enough for this feeling old/sore guy who won't make it till then

Couple random items of little real importance but tossing up anyway:

Doing my best "bad weather stay away" dance with pulling out the generator and snow blower for some exercise this AM. Snow estimates from 1" to 9" but far more concerned about the ice potential which is minimal however wasn't forecasted for this AM and showed up anyway so it can't hurt to be ready

20211231_092440.jpg

Wife's sister car was reportedly making odd noises so she stopped by the other night. ..Nissan Elentra. Last time I was asked to look at it because it was making weird noises it had a loose under body shield that took about 25 seconds to fix, diagnosis time was similar this time around but won't be as fast to fix

20211230_175702.jpg

Midas apparently did some exhaust work a couple years ago maybe??? Not entirely sure but she didn't have time that night in the warmth and convenience of the garage to let me do more than diagnose it. Budget required a cost effective fix so to start I planned on slitting the sleeve and using a muffler clamp and see how long it goes. Got that done in the parking lot of her work this AM:

20211231_113345.jpg

Now to see how long it lasts before I need to redo that sleeve and try and fix it "more gooder" as a former coworker would say

Well snow was a wonderful surprise...about 2" instead of the initially forecasted 4-8". I will say my "Bad weather stay away" dance of prepping the blower and generator were the reason...weather service said something about atmosphere drier than expected and saturation took longer reducing accumulation...either way not complaining!

With 2 cars in the garage and a workbench that was still a mess not much other than occasional cleaning was accomplished out here on Friday or Saturday:

20211231_204319.jpg

But this AM after breakfast and seeing the inlaws off(and therefore freeing up a garage stall as well) I did get some time to start layout and 1 cut towards today's goal of turning this larger sheet of 3/4" ply into smaller pieces of 3/4" ply. Hoping 1 project for me and 1 for the wife will be the result...let's see how far family commitments let me get today

20220102_091229.jpg

First real test of the minisplit in cold weather as its about 0 F out there right now....its going into defrost mode about 2x an hour right now for 10 minutes or so but then goes back to normal operation. It's a bit colder in the garage then normal but can't say how much as the thermometer on the wall broke.

Thanks for the dance! I moved the tractor to the detached garage, Mach 1 to the shop, did the shuffle with all the other shop vehicles and didn't have to run the tractor to move snow. I'll send the 15y/o slave, I mean son, to scoop the little bit we have piled up.

Ha! Well I'm sure it's working better than mine, still. From what I've gathered as a beginner, everyone runs into some sort of problem at some point...

It seems to have started acting up a bit when I installed the Rasberry Pi based remote print monitoring OctoPrint to it...sure it's just coincidence.....

I actually had this same thought today. I've been running through the gamut of settings and still having problems with the simple XYZ cube deformations. Then I was trying to remember when they started and it might have been around the time I set up Octoprint (yep, got it running, too! It's awesome!). As we speak I'm printing a cube from the old school on board SD card just to rule it out.

First real test of the minisplit in cold weather as its about 0 F out there right now....

Got ya beat! Woke up to -16°F this morning!

Looking forward to whatever the plywood projects are.

Happiness is a 4 stroke, electric start snowblower. 1st snow of the season here today.

Amongst other things, I spy Graph paper and a mechanical pencil.

Here on the tropical east of VA. Currently 61 and balmy. We’re supposed to get snow starting sometime after midnight. Likely not enough to get out the real snow blower. I’m going to try the Milwaukee 18m 200mph blower I recently gifted myself. Should be good if the snow is powdery or a failure if wet. :ROFLMAO:

In good news...that larger sheet of plywood is several smaller sheets now!

In bads news...I made a boo boo..

20220102_140412.jpg

I've cussed it and starred at it...and at this point think I'll live with it...its in the garage project so it's not house work and once done it'll be semi concealed...and the part that's not will remind me of what not to do!

More later....hopefully tonight

We visited some family that was in from Minneapolis Saturday night and I was quick to request they take this cold weather back north to folks who enjoy it :)

Snowblowers are a wonderful insurance policy :) And I remember when I was the slave....I'm told it builds character....and after my brother and I were both in college a snowblower quickly appeared!

:ROFLMAO:

If your red one is like my teal one, it will work on powdery stuff but hope you've got some big batteries as it'll eat them up fast! It's what I use on our porch and deck, and have used it once or twice on a vehicle that was in the driveway overnight!

Logan, that looks like an opportunity for a hand crafted wedge. I'm sure there's a piece of scrap ply in the bin. If not, I think I have an oak veneer strip that would work.

That exactly what I'm thinking....it looks worse once it was plowed out completely for the shelf it'll eventually receive but it'll be mostly concealed so the filler won't have to be perfect:
1.2.21 1.JPG

One for @Trapps...the gray pencil is a .9mm lead, the black is .5mm
1.2.22 3.JPG

So the garage project is a hand plane till with the fairly standard "angled" board for them to rest on and a shelf underneath. Base is approximately 11.25" deep, the angled "bed" for the planes to rest on is 28" long at a 15 degree angle to accommodate a #8 down the road and the rest of the dimensions are kinda winged based on what I had to work with on that sheet....but back to the pictures:

I've got some work to do on my lighting still(which I knew) as the shadows weren't playing nice so this helped!
1.2.22 6.JPG

Action shot during nap time this afternoon...think this was right after I screwed up the groove with the router table! Short story there is that fence wasn't square to the world, so I unscrewed the Incra rail from the top as I was going to be building a modified router table anyway to use that Incra setup and router lift on....well life got in the way...that project hasn't been drawn up yet and now I need to go back to getting that table functional as it is but for that route I forgot to clamp that back Jorgy F style clamp down after getting the fence squared....

Still a more salvageable screwup than the Chiefs today....doh!

1.2.21 2.JPG

And made it way father than I was hoping and got it glued up...well at least part of it! Doesn't look like I have a picture of it but the sides have rabbits for the back and the bottom as I was hoping to avoid visible screw heads on those faces....overkill for sure but I went with it. I didn't rabbit the back panel to receive the bottom(or vice versa) as I wasn't against screws in locations that wouldn't be visible

1.2.22 4.JPG

1.2.22 5.JPG

The back piece wasn't behaving nice and had a bit of a bow to it so needed the cabinet clamps there to **** it up tight which also made me realize I need some bigger cabinet clamps as those are my only 2! I did shoot a dozen or so 16 ga nails in each side into the back so with that and the liberal use of Titebond it hopefully won't fail on me

Next up will be to get that small top piece on, the shelf in and then the angled board for resting them

And I finished the wife's project too...just has to be installed tomorrow...it's not nearly as exciting but should make her happy!

Fill it with a blue epoxy river :ROFLMAO:

Hand plane till… neat. Excited to see the final form.

Random detail but what’s the reason for the blue tape on the plywood when cutting with the track saw?

There are some here who enjoy it, but many of us do not, including myself. Especially the polar vortexes and negative temps. I’m more of a shorts and flip flops person. 😁

Epoxy fill is a possibility!

The blue tape was initially for when I was laying out the pieces to make sure it was going to work as I planned then ended up making my pencil marks for the cut on the tape as I had the finished side up and our doesn't take pencil marks as well. I should have stopped partway and flipped the sheet over to limit chip out of the finish on the off cut side as this prefinished stuff seems to chip worse.

And I hear you on the weather, asked my brother this question the other day ..

thumb_the-air-hurts-my-face-why-am-i-living-where-64155663.png

And he reminded me we can't afford where the air doesn't hurt the face at least part of the year...guess here is hoping for that Powerball to hit for 500M+....guess I better buy a ticket

Otherwise...not much happening here now...the 6 month old caught Hand, Foot and Mouth so no daycare for him for a couple days till it's no longer contagious. Good news is the 3 yr old doesn't have it yet, and I can get 1/2 a day or so of work in during the day during naps and attempt to make up the rest before or after but wipes out garage time for a bit most likely

Stay safe out there...especially the east coast guys dealing dealing with huge snowfalls!

Stay away from that. I got it from my daughter, only a mild case, and it was no fun. Chopping firewood all day before I realized I had it wasn't good either. Took off my gloves and went Oh S*%# when I saw my hands.

Ugh...mirrors what others I've talked with have said. Lower risk of adults getting it but when they do it's often more severe. Same thing happened to my brother and his wife last year, daughter root it and then mom and dad got it worse. Pretty sure we have been washing our hands more in the last 24 hrs then we did while at the NICU and keep reminding the toddler her brother is a "germ monster" and she can't hug him which is tough but hopefully helps keep her from getting it!

Also tried to convince the wife that last night after cleaning and lysol wiping the kitchen I was "disinfecting my mouth and throat" with the Bulleit Bourbon....she rolled her eyes and wandered away so I called it a win :)

Well I do have a handle of Everclear for the next batch of apple pie...it did cross my mind! So far Bulleit or Apple Pie have been successful in preventing me from getting it and hourly reminders to the 3 yr old that her brother is a "germ monster" have helped keep her from getting it....if we can make it to Monday morning we'll feel in the clear.

Did finish the wife's little project which was much less complicated(or as cleanly executed) then @jar944 kitchen organizing...in this case just adding a shelf to a lower cabinet. She didn't care much for how it looked but was told I wasn't allowed to go buy more material and to make do with what I had....so the 3/4" finished 1 side ply without edgeband(out as well) was the chosen victim. Did break the rule of no buying new stuff as I only had 1/4" shelf pegs and these are 5mm...but a quick orange box stop fixed that

Far from perfect but functional and made the wife and toddler happy as it freed up 2 drawers in 3 yr old reach for her plates, waterbottles and sippy cups.

Lol… those child door locks bring back many memories.

Can't wait till we are comfortable getting rid of them! I at least have these set so in a moment of forgetfulness and I or a guest brute force them they will release without breaking...so far the 3 yr old hasn't figured that out...hopefully that continues

You pick up another round of snow or did it miss you?

Some recent pics have shown football on the garage tv.... nice but not the main reason it's there. With my garage time generally corresponding to when the kids are asleep, being able to glance at them quickly, especially towards the end of nap time without getting out the distraction device called a smartphone is a huge benefit!

Yeah, we did. Only about 3-5 this time and the M18 blower actually did the job on clearing the car..... Roads were a lot better this time. Everyone stayed home during commute, so had empty roads when driving to work. Had empty office, which I like, to get some stuff done in peace....:ROFLMAO:

What baby monitor do you use? I might need to copy this with my spare TV.
