Forrest and Alinc- it’s definitely a fun little haul with some fair no haggle prices there.

Lugz- I found a 1920’s Uncle Wiggly item in my attic. My mom had no idea whose it was, likely the past residents. It sold quite well!

Mike- that part is a Schwinn handle bar stem. Found an image.

Vlchek Combo Wrench Set I’m working on for my winter project. Special thank you to d42jeep for selling me his Vlchek combos. I have the 13/16th at our cottage in my box there. Will get it next trip up to check on the place. If any of you are looking for Vlchek’s I have some duplicates. Also looking for Vlchek Combos. These wrenches are comfortable wrenches. I’m an Ohio guy, so I enjoy trying to get Ohio tools. Would love to replace my Craftsman with more Ohio made stuff.

So I was perusing the local CL - Free section and saw a listing for office furniture at the curb in a nearby town. I ran out at 8PM into the 25 degree night to go check it out.

There were 3 Steelcase metal desks, some office chairs, a number of lateral file cabinets and a Hamilton drafting table. I snagged the drafting table and have been thinking about going back for the desks - but I have no where to store them.

The top doesn't appear to be original - it's a fixed mount (not hinged) and it doesn't match the frame. The top appears to be aluminum has an interesting texture that I'm not familiar with.

The wide "pencil" drawer is wood with a metal front and appears to be shop built. The top right drawer is wood with a metal front but seems factory. The other 2 drawers are steel? I'm confused . . .

Anyway I am trying to figure out where it can fit in the mess that is my basement.

Cheers

Jim

On Friday, I made a quick run to a couple sales before the wife and I got out of town for a bit. I was really looking forward to the first sale, but, despite the shear volume of stuff (old Catapillar, clocks by the mile, lathes, secret rooms, etc.) it was a bust:
51836993903_41f192eb4f_c.jpg
Some Stanley bits, soldering helper, and a pipe. $3.

And I wasn't planning to hit the second sale, as there was one closer to home, which I wasn't too much interested in. But the only sale that showed pics of hand tools laid out wasn't too much further away, so I figured I would push my luck. And I am glad I did.
The first thing I saw of interest in the garage were these three wooden drawers, priced at $10 for the trio
51838290402_9664ce8767_c.jpg
so I snapped those up. And then I saw a little, sad toolbox sitting off to the side, no price on it though... Popped it open, and figured I would ask for a volume deal:
51837234309_5b33e7b94a_c.jpg
Picked up a couple of other things, a Bonney socket box, and ratchet, and a Williams socket, and got a total of $18.

The drawers, once I got a good chance to take a look at them, had a few interesting things in them; a few Blue Points dies, Hibbard chisels, Stanley 4" square body, lamp parts, etc. Not bad, and they will go nicely below my bench.
51839237561_07748530db_c.jpg
But that toolbox, that was packed!
51838948919_8829d7d91b_c.jpg
There was an almost complete set of Mustang 1/2" and 1/4", most of a Bonney 1/2" set, Armstrong, Willams, Plomb, Proto, Craftsman, too much Taiwan, and assorted other things, including a partial Chrome Alloy (SK) 1/4" set. I am still sorting it all out.
51839967270_efcffb034b_c.jpg
It was an odd sale. There was an Atlas wood lathe from the '30s, but they wanted $600. On the other hand, a Craftsman bandsaw from the same time period was only $40. The stuff in the house was priced competitively, but any and all tools were all over the place.

PXL_20220122_015130349-X3.jpgHere’s my haul for the weekend, picked up from a Friday sale that had been going all week, with apparently minimal sales. When I arrived, it looked like same pix listed Monday. Lotsa stuff with minimal appeal, radios from 2003 cars, grill from an older Acura. While I was there, someone bought a bucket of shop rags.

was not doing my best work, the two little saws are more bent than I normally buy. But the big one is an Atkins, not one of their best, but decent. The portable drawers have a few goodies inside, and missing a few drawers, May try to fab something later, or put a small Altoids like box in the holes.

the jack has a 3/4 inch drive, and ~4-16” range. Broke the rust free from the frame, ran WD40 to clear **** out, then a white lithium lube. Will need a rust removal and repaint when the weather is a bit nicer for painting. Last is a 14.4 Makita drill, to replace one with a bad gearbox.

otherwise, not much to a entice me over the hill.

Drafting table base converted to a work bench.
Yes - that is likely what it will become here. The existing top is dirty but unmarred - so it lived an easy life wherever it was.

It came out of a closed Plumbing Supply location and based on embossed pattern of the existing top it wasn't used for drafting.

I have several oak desktops and one monster piece of butcherblock in storage - so one of then should fit this base as a workbench top.

Bike stem... Right... Makes a lot more sense than what I was thinking (mini rocket, LOL)...

@bmwrd0 Quite the array of stuff there!

@Jim_No_Garage I've been forcing myself to avoid picking up those desks, as I have no room for one. But, they're absolute tanks if you need one!

Decided to run out for a few things Saturday morning and swing by my favorite thrift/tool store.
My truck had other plans though as I hadn’t plugged the block heater in Friday night and after sitting for 3 days with temps in the teens at night the weak batteries didn’t have enough to spin the ol 12 valve over after it sputtered and died out the first try. After dragging out extensions chords and the battery charger to the truck I ended up taking the wife’s car. I guess I’ll be buying two new batteries soon.

Picked up some more Wiss snips, 10 and a-11. craftsman side cutters and crescent needle nose, craftsman Dbe, sk Wayne combo, proamerica combo (never heard of this brand before) Proto la 7/16, sk lectrolite 3/8, craft 1/4”, the 2nd smallest doe is a dual marked (inch and metric) 723, smallest is a barcalo.
The other row consists of some Proto and Proto professional combos at the top, Superrench, couple craftsman underline and a Thorsen.
lastly 1-1/4” Stanley chisel a 1/2” breaker bar and a 1/2” indestro ratchet.

I had a pretty good $8 day yesterday.

Estate sale was billed as a vintage woodworker and bicycle hoarder's sale. I went on the last day and went straight through the house to the ramshackle garage & workshop. It was a mess. Tables, workbenches and a couple of table saws all piled high with years of ****. It was nearly noon and it was just dark enough in the shop that you couldn't really see well enough to read. As I poked my flashlight into dark corners, several people commented that they wished they had brought one. There were a couple of tool chests and half a dozen tool box tote trays scattered throughout the area. I started with one of the first trays I saw that had a lot of sockets and dug out three or four wide band Williams Diamond W sockets and four or five Blackhawk Lock-on sockets. I've always liked the look of those Blackhawks but have never run across more than onesies or twosies so I rarely picked them up. Now that I had the makings of a couple of partial sets, I focused my search on completing them as best I could. In almost every tray and chest drawer I found one or two more. Towards the end, I realized that if I had started picking up all the Wizard sockets I found I could probably have gotten a pretty good set of those, too--but I didn't want to go back and search all over again. Sadly, I didn't find a single drive tool for either set.

Along the way I picked up some orphan sockets from SO, S-K Wayne, Indestro and a Durolast 1/2 to 3/4" adapter,
a nice Challenger 1670 breaker bar,
an Action 12JA hinge handle.
a Duro-Chrome 1033C DOE,
an elongated shiny smooth magnet (there were several but I don't know what the use of that shape is for so I only got the one),
an old Six Lever lock with two keys
and a US Air Corps 4050-A Bombsight Disk Speed Indicator by Jaeger Watch Co. Now if I can ever find a Norden Bombsight, I can die happy.
I also paid for a steel mesh tray for my e-tank that was too big for my bag o' loot, but stupidly got distracted at the cashiers table and forgot it when I left.

24 Jan 22f.jpg 24 Jan 22g.jpg

When I got home and started to clean things up, I discovered the Blackhawk sockets were not 3/8 drive as I had thought. This started a trail of discovery about Blackhawk's 7/16 drive series. I had seen the term "Nugget" before on the Blackhawk thread but never delved into what it involved. Now I'll have to keep a sharp lookout for matching Nugget tools to fill out this set--and no, I'll not be obsessing over that torpedo toolbox--unless one falls into my lap!

When I left the house Sat morning to see if the guy on CL really had any old woodworking chisels, planes or vises I had no idea what was about to ensue. Turned out he was selling the estate of a close friend as a favor to the man's family who I take it are not local. No estate sale ad had been posted. I think he had posted a couple of larger items (Delta 9" table saw, riding lawn mower, etc) on CL with hopes that people would take more than they had come for. When I arrived 30 minutes early for my scheduled noon meeting all I could see was the guy carrying a small anvil out to his car. Drat! Too late! Before I go any further I'm not sure if I should create a separate thread for this haul or try to post it here. There's going to be lots of pics because a lot of it I'm not sure what it is and need help to identify it. Then there's also just the volume. Tools in the traditional sense wasn't what dominated this pick but lots of good and interesting stuff. What the heck...I'll just post it all here. My apologies before hand for taking up so much room. ;0)

I'm going to start off with pics of the books. The previous owner had many interests. He blew glass for the research labs at the University of Texas. He was into glass blowing, watch & clock making, Native American history and culture, metalworking, photography, guns, Zippos, old gizmos, etc, etc, etc.

Pics...

And last is the first thing I spotted in the shop. I don't believe I have room or a place for it which totally *****. I so don't have room that it's still sitting in the Forester in the driveway. Yawman and Erbe, Rochester NY, metal storage cabinet. Two lower pieces, each 18-drawers with a top 5-drawer piece. Not pictured are the 2 wooden crates of hardware taken from the Y & E cabinet in order for me to load it in the car.

IMG_3834.JPG

I ended up spending 6 hours picking on Saturday. Spent all day yesterday cataloging stuff to figure out what I got because I was just piling up boxes on stuff that looked like it might be interesting. I literally couldn't get another box into the Forester when I left. The kind of pick we all dream of hitting. Fun stuff. I spent $200 in total. I hope you guys can help me with the stuff I don't know much about. Thanks!

Yeah, now that you’ve made 17 posts here, (and in the vise thread), I think this deserves its own thread. We will create 17 million posts describing all of those wondrous items you scored. Please don’t tell us you got out for under $100, just to make it more wonderful.

You're killing me RTM! But my own fault for mis-posting. It cost me a whole lot more than $100. $200 was the total bill. :lol_hitti

Yes, it is.
When I was at the first sale of the day, I went down to the basement to see if anything was left of the hand tools (which included a respectable amount of Snap-On). As I began looking around a couple was buying an older SO box from maybe the late 40s. I wandered over to the table next to where the box was and spied this just laying there in a pile of greasy SO sockets priced at $10 each (among a lot of less desirable items). This wasn't even priced. I instantly knew it was pretty good due to the discussion from a couple weeks ago on this thread. I thought I would ask anyway just to see what they wanted. I took it upstairs and they said $5. They probably thought I had Parknsons because I was shaking as I paid. I looked it up and it is a lot better than I thought.20220122_161320.jpg20220122_161328.jpg20220122_161340.jpg20220122_161349.jpg

Patent Pending, earliest style. I still can't believe it.

If this thread is not enough to light a fire under you to get out there, I don't what will! So many awesome finds!

I picked up a few items but what is unusual for my area is the pic with the PROTO puller. Not many sales around here that are the $.50 kind but got the puller, copper putter, brush and wrench for only $2.

Got a lifetime supply of hacksaw blades and snap-off razors.

Anybody recognize what this steel grid platform thingy is part of?

@txlonghorn1989 Massive suckage doesn't even begin to describe that haul!!!!!

My first thought with the Ideal "welder" is maybe a thermocouple welder? The smaller part shows up in an (old? accurate?) Ebay listing as a wire stripper.

Thanks bmw! Yeah, I was pumped about the books as well!

Thanks Mike! I really want to find out what the Ideal product is. Will post it on some other websites.

From 11:30am to about 5:30pm when I left there had been maybe 6 or 7 people there. And for the last 3-4 hours it was me and 3-4 women who were just picking in the house. Definitely one I'll remember a long time.

I'm going to start off with pics of the books.
Love the Popular Mechanix!
Any idea on the age of the case?
1943. Signal Corps almost always embedded the year in their contract numbers, which is what is on that data tag.
Heavy cast iron tripod base,
Really nice with multiple re-purpose possibilities.
Forestry Suppliers Inc leather shoulder bag stamped with model 33376 (what is this for?)
Could be a map bag. It has similar features to map bags. The pocket on the outside would be for a compass or scope or whatnot. I collect military map bags, mainly canvas, some leather. But it could be something else, too. Not saying it definitively.
wooden hand made canes,
Very cool. There's a can guy up here who shows up with dozens a few times per year. The nicer ones command big bucks. It's a collecting niche all by itself.
Yawman and Erbe, Rochester NY, metal storage cabinet.
Very nice.

You're going to be as heaped in praise as your stuff, so you don't need me to tell you it was an epic haul. And if you were going to say the price, as I was scrolling I was thinking 3 x what you paid.

Wow! That under the radar estate sale is the stuff of legends! So many great pieces, at a YOU **** price!

I think that cast iron base is from a drafting table/desk. And it alone was worth the price of admission.

I have been disciplining myself to stay away from estate sales lately... but if my willpower gives out I will blame it on you!
