Flashlight, coveralls, gloves, wet wipes, fuses. Electrical tape, rescue tape, duct tape. Assorted Zipties. A tow strap and whatever is required to hook it to either end of your vehicle. A shackle or hook for the other end also. Ratchet straps can do an amazing amount of things for a short time.

Ratcheting Bit screwdriver and a pack of tips that will cover whatever things you might want to open up (usually phillips and/or torx, depending upon car). I carry a leatherman, but a small set of needle nose pliers for pulling fuses would do.

Whatever tools you might need to change a tire, battery, headlight bulb, and/or turn signal. I come across cars that don't have the tools to remove their own tires pretty often.

How big do you want this tool roll? Wrenches, ratchets and sockets are next. Are you experienced enough to use a multimeter?

Tire repair kit and air compressor, Jump Pack, extra fluids, hose clamps

I used to do some pretty remote adventuring, and tried to carry what I thought might be useful.
Spare axles, starter, ECU, a welder... I feel that if I was towing an entire spare vehicle I still could not account for every failure.

I'd suggest attempting some imagined 'Emergency repairs' and develop your toolkit around what you feel your comfort level is.
No sense in lugging 100# of tools that aren't needed.

How old is the car?
In my modern vehicles I carry a compressor, smallish 1/4” tool kit, jumper cables, flashlight and a AAA card. Anything more advanced repair I’m not attempting on the side of the road or in a parking lot.

In my off-road vehicles it’s a different story. Much more in-depth tool kits and repair parts.

I've made use of a flashlight, pliers, tiny 1/4 drive socket set, tire plug kit and jumper cables more than anything. I've used my tire plug kit numerous times. I know blackjack plugs are not an ideal repair, but it's come in handy for myself and others.

It's a 2018 Toyota RAV4. So far I have jumper cables, jump box, tire plug kit, mini air compressor, breaker bar with socket to match lug nuts, head lamp, tool roll with cobra style pliers, vice grips, adjustable wrench, pliers, 11 in 1 screw driver, zip ties, electrical tape, and duct tape. Planning on picking up a tow/recovery strap w/ shackles and adding a 3/8 inch ratchet, assorted shallow/deep metric sockets, needle nose and side cutting pliers. Just wondering if I was missing anything. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

An extra battery for your key fob.
On Toyota/Lexus the enclosed key will fit the slot to open the fob case for replacement.

I'd vote just a jump box and a AAA card. I used to carry a ton of stuff, like a whole toolbox, never used anything on the vehicles. Even my jeep I've cut down my tools/spare parts to bare minimum, basically what I can get off the trail with in a pinch. All that piddly stuff adds up in the weight department.

lithium jump starter, air pump, plug kit, pair of needle nose locking pliers to pull nails/screws from a tire. outside of a dead battery or a tire repair, what are you doing roadside on a modern car?

I purchased a 2015 Venza V6 AWD new in December of 2014, I had a small adjustable wrench, a leatherman, a flashlight and a Klien multi bit screwdriver.
I worked in NE and lived in SC, when I sold the car in late 2019 it had 185K on the speedometer. I used the screwdriver once to change a bulb in Virginia.
I had planned this car purchase to last me until I retired and it would have had about 325K on it by then, I was deemed disabled in late 2019 so I sold it early.

I used the airlines to commute a lot but I also ran the car back and forth quite a few times, I did have AAA and used it once for a jump start in Northern Pennsylvania.

I think your sweating nothing...

Great post. I think I posted in most of those. OP already has a pretty good handle on things and likely more than he will ever need, which is preferable to the alternative. I would add a battery brush as I’ve wanted one a couple of times. And if you are like most GJ members, you will use the tools to help others way more often than need them yourself.

As an aside, I finally bought this Gedore Red set from Amazon. Since I saw it, it sat in my cart for a year. I absolutely don’t need it but couldn’t help myself.

Lets see...
Dead batteries
Loose lug nuts (Some toyota dealerships seem good at causing this one)
Tire problems
Dead Key fob
Keys locked in vehicles
Starters (a couple times)
Alternators (a couple times)
Fuel pumps (once at a gas station; another time at a Honda dealership, because the quoted labor price was astronomical so i bought the part and put it in myself in their parking lot )
Window regulator broke in a rainstorm; another time in the dead of winter (Was SOOO relieved to have tools both times)
Broken shifter linkage on a couple different HD trucks
Helped a guy do an emergency brake job
Helped a guy diagnose an emergency crank no start and got him back on the road
Broken exhaust dragging the road multiple times
Loose tensioner pulley, not charging
Equipment repairs
Frozen locks
Man too many to remember them all...

i guess we view things differently. i think if i have time and ability to go get parts, i also have the ability to get the necessary tools. my comment was meant as using what you have with you to get going from dead in the water to mobile.

The only things I can think of off the top of my head:
- Box knife
- Pry tool (another wouldn't-have-it-without-GJ item, but I freakin' love it)(link)

- Flashlight (head lamp is good, but I'd add a good flashlight also)
- Small pick set.
