Just curious...

Say we are starting with a gate located 650ft (or more) from the residence (and power source), but nothing has been done. No conduit, nothing installed yet.
What would be the recommended solution from the experts? I just recently visited a residence where the outer gate was easily a half-mile from the dwelling, with no adjacent structures/improvements/poco lines close by. As I punched in the gate code I was wondering how in the heck would they get power out here?
a good suggestion has already been made. DC gate opener ran on batteries, with a charger that operates on a trickle charge and/or solar.... The batteries are the primary supply so no huge in-rush on the AC line. The AC line only powers the charger and solar can supplement the AC feed.

So it would still require running an AC feed a great distance from the dwelling?

Depends on what all I want out at the gate. If I just want a gate opener then I'm going with a solar panel and batteries.

If I want a camera and intercom to the gate and or other security sensors ect, then I'm more likely to trench and pull power from the house. Also depends on if I have to trench water/sewer/gas from the street anyways. It is still possible with solar and batteries and a microwave link for the data.

My driveway is 180feet but it is ~500 from the street to the house. I had to replace the water line so when I had the trench open I put two conduit runs 2.5" because I got a good deal on it. I will put a security camera and driveway sensor in at some point.

@ 500' you could run a 2A load with 12 AWG. I'm still curious if anyone knows what the receptical rules are when the circuit is not rated for 15A. Can I just put a duplex outlet with a label on it "2A MAX" like they do for light fixture wattage ratings.?
