Eddie Ford gave me a copy years ago.

That makes sence.
Eddie is a great bloke & is always keen to help if he can (I know he has done for me :bounce:)
By the way, did you see Ron's right up in the August issue of ASR, I for some reason didn't recieve it (I found out about it today & never realised I didn't have the mag)
He has done a segment on shrinking. He gave my dics a good plug (must have been the dinner we had last time he was out.................yes...in Castlemiane ) Just kidding, he's a good friend.
So many people are prepaired to help out in this industry if they can. Eddie is one of those people.

No work on the shop truck I'm afraid, though I will be happy to see the paper work come back as it will be a month since I submitted it :(

Eddie is a top fellow. Very laid back but when he has time he can always offer some good information.

I did read your free plug / promotion and have to say that is good from a master like that. His work is promoting many interesting things. An example being the art display here at the recent state festival and the talk Ron Covell put on at the local gallery.

The fellow who did the body work and paint on my F4 went with me to listen and see what it was all about and this week I find he has made a MACK Dog mail box  after all the inspiration. He restores Macks for a living so my F4 was different for him.

Good luck with you paper work. I can not wait fo park my F4 beside yours project at an event.

Simon,
Ron, Larry & myself went to see the "reed" Hot Rod sulpture on the Friday before that event. (we met in the"Hot Rod" display first )

After dinner Ron & myself took a strole down to the town square where all the festivities where going on.
I would love to have stayed on for his speach, but I had already taken off the whole weekend to catch up with him & Kelvin, also to attend attend his workshop (as I couldn't travel all that way with out sitting in on it :bounce:)

I was unaware he had done that artical, in fact I hadn't seen it until today (for some reason I didn't get my copy last month :() so he did it with out me knowing.
The picture in the mag is of one of my discs, but on his grinder back in the States, as he bought a few tools from me while he was here

Sorry about all the off topic stuff there guys,
back to the task in hand.

While I've been very busy at work, including the shop trailer build, I now have my paper work back from the rego. department.
I very happy to announce that all the things I wanted to do have been approved with not one single question.
Even all the chassis work & no mention about an engineer :bounce::bounce:
The paper work has approval for 6 seats & the wide tracks

As soon as the trailer is finished, my "spare" time will then go back onto the Shop Truck, so I will up date as things start progressing.

Still hunting for the correct type on hood hinges to use & what column ??

Right Ho!

After waiting for a year to get the big brake kit for the front done, we have dummied it all up & have FINALLY started the build proper :D :D

PicsfromNociaphone006.jpg

The cab has now been widened to a final 10" at the cowl, so another 4 " wider than previous (I'm glad we didn't start the body work until we had final tracks)
We spent a lot of time to get it right before we started making the patches & welding them in for good.

The first patch made

2nd patch

3rd patch

The beginnings of the 4th patch

So the long haul has begun.
We are pretty busy, but hopefull to keep the working moving along though much of it will be after hours (if there is such a thing  )

I've been asked to keep the pics coming, so I'll try to remember to take them.

Had 'ONE OF THOSE DAYS' today................&*^#($*@%&&^!%#(*  :?
Got drenched heading into work.
Dropped my 9" Grinder right onto the edge of the Shrinking Disc (dunno where I can get a new one do ya  )
I forgot my wallet...........so no lunch!
& to top it all off.............I'm not happy with the out come of the shape.

The top of the cowl would of course usually have a vent in there, so it would be nearly flat which is almost how it is now. (I had considered making a new cowl vent, as the new shape on the front of the cowl/rear of bonnet won't match the original one)
I have stopped short of finishing the planishing work, so now I'm sitting here with a beer looking at the pics
It looks **** the way it has ended up, so I'll think on it for a few days & work out how to solve the problem.
The photo makes it look like there is a hollow in the middle, but there ain't
in fact it does have a crown in it, just not enough in my mind

PicsfromNociaphone038.jpg

Dunno if this shows it any better

PicsfromNociaphone039.jpg

No work done on it today, though I did have a visitor who saw the up date on the other forum who called by to make sure I hadn't just done some photoshopping :lol_hitti

Geez Simon,

I'll organise an up date shortly.

What can I say:bounce: I had a quiet day and went looking for some old topics here on the forum and decided it was time you showed us some more :)

Dropped my 9" Grinder right onto the edge of the Shrinking Disc (dunno where I can get a new one do ya  )
I forgot my wallet...........so no lunch!

Yes I do I often see a fellow I know at many of the Swap Meets.
 No Lunch so more time to work on that project. It is Looking good.

What forum would that be :headscrat ? This is the only real forum :lol_hitti

Ha de ha ha!

No more work on it AGAIN today :(:(
Too busy chasing around my 2 workers, as we also started a new build for another customer :thumbup:
I think I only managed only 1 hours actual work, in between phone callls, orders, visitors & setup of the '52 Chev with the boys.

Oh well, at least we're being productive :bounce::bounce:

Just found this thread. I just started on my first project truck ('54 F-100) and after looking at your work, I'm convinced I know absolutely nothing!!:lol_hitti

Can you give some background on what "metal finishing" entails?

Looking forward to following this thread closely!!

A bit of an undate (though not much progression :headscrat)

I have now re-made the cowl section...........AGAIN :wtf::wtf:

Much happier with it now.

PicsfromNociaphone064.jpg

Have ended up removing the roof sections, welding them together & cut the piece I had already made for the centre apart, to fill in the 2 gaps.
I also ended up removing the joining strip above the window (there was a bit of rust in there, so we just welded it up. The panels are misaligned there (because of the foulded joining strip) so we have no option but to use a little filler there :yikes:

Looks half ok :headscrat

PicsfromNociaphone065.jpg

I didn't do anything on it last week, and this week isn't looking good either (even after working all the 7 days :headscrat:headscrat)

This is a great thread, I can hardly wait to see some more progress on your truck, keep those pic's coming our way!

Has anyone ever gone to the anual Moab car show? Some guy brings a sweet Diamond-T crew cab one car hauler most every year, what a truck might I say.

Great build!! I may have missed it, but are you going to square the window frame of the rear doors to make it look more like a production crew cab or are you going to leave the original door lines?

I like the guages and the wheels look good too! Are you going to have a normal pickup bed or make it into a flat bed?

Man, this is one build I will have to watch!

Rocket,

:lol_hitti Good to see you found it to update it :lol_hitti

What methods do you use when working your metal so that you are not requireing the use of filler?

Rocket will not answer that so I will have to direct you to his web site.
http://rodsandrelics.com.au/site/index.php as that will tell you more.

Yep!
Thats the go  Squared rear doors & the roof gutter will also run straight through instead os how it looks atm.
While there will be no chop on it, I will actually be raising the 'B' pillars.
This is due to the needing a curve to match the original door tops & of course the main roof.

Man, this is one build I will have to watch!

I have a Hilux King Cab (or extra cab for those who speak a different lingo :bounce:) & plan to only use the floor pan & tailgate hinges & latches, though the handle will end up on the inside, out of sight.
I will be making new skins all round for the tub, so it will end up as a 'Style Side' tub with about 1/2 size rear fenders.
Like an Amercian Pickup Bed, but in a style side if you can get that.

What methods do you use when working your metal so that you are not requireing the use of filler?

For starters I use an oxy to weld the panels (a much softer weld that can be easily planished) tight fitting joints for welding saves work down the track (I do not use any filler rod unless I have to)
While I sometimes just jump in and do a complete weld, no matter how long it is (I have welded rear tub sections in vintage cars in one go {about a 5 ' weld :wtf} & just deal with the shrinkage later) I do prefer to hammer weld.
Tack the whole panel up, and weld sections at a time, hammering the weld while it's still hot. The finish is much better & I tend to think it is also a little stronger.

Using Doliies & Hammmers, a Slap Hammer, a Bullseye Pick & a Shrinking Disc certainly helps to metal finsh.............Oh! & PLENTY of time :shocking::shocking:

Oh!
There is times you have to use filler & it is a normal thing (what we call a 'standard finish' in the industry, as many just will not pay for metal finishing.
Filler is fine, so long as it's used in moderation
