    The repurposing thread

Thats awesome. Im not saying this is the best or safest, but it has served 4 house holds and held strong. The weak point actually was the well pump switch. With the vibration and high current it needs replaced once in a blue moon. One thing is for sure though, its not dry air lol.

    The repurposing thread

From a generation greater than mine, over 50 years old. An air compressor passed down to me through my family made of an AC motor, tank, a well pump pressure switch, some old copper, and a 1973 ford air conditioning compressor. When men build things instead of ordering them off Amazon. What have...

    Compressor wiring question.

This would make since, but if it where then why would it be ok to us 240 but not 208? 240 is Is 4.3% over volt and 208 is 8% under. I have hooked up many of motors in a 208v system that where 230 volt. These motors where provided and spec per the job.

    Compressor wiring question.

you need to size off of 5hp. the 5hp SPL does mean special. But what it really means is this motor has the ability to develop 5hp. the FLA amps (15) is only to be used for your overloads. So here we go, let the arguments begin if they must, that's not what I here for- (2014 NEC code) step 1- 5...

drill my own KOs in a panel?

This is exactly right.if they knew the actual arc flash calculation of what they where doing they would know to shut it down and lock it out.

    Branch Circuit Capacity Check

I would just go with 10/2 and be done with it. at the end of the day, its your call. the code is 125% your calculations are at 20.89. you now have the knowledge you need. you can pick rather you want to violate the code and maybe be just fine or do it right.

Recommended books for learning about residential electrical?

I think mike holts has a book or two on what your looking for. I would also look at getting the latest adopted NEC code book for your area.

    Building up grade questions

Im not relying on the slab thickness to make up for any shortcuts in grade work, I want 6 to 8 because of a lift and use of a fork truck with loads on it. I my look at at least getting a price to go stick built. All I need is the foundation work and block laid. And slab poured. I will self...

Feeding a pole barn from a subpanel

Yes no-ox, auto correct got me. gentleman, are you saying if it's not code you do not practice it? Remembering code is bare minimum? Are you the same person that runs emt with not ground because "it's code"? As far as the cutting into the wire, remember we are only tightening to what it was...

Feeding a pole barn from a subpanel

new aluminum is "compact" this is only sizing not expanding problems. If the manufacturer has recommended not re torquing then it is not needed. But no manufacturing is currently writing off maintenance torquing of their aluminum conductors. I am a trained and up to day journeyman wire men and...

Probably a dumb question about rigid conduit

Yes it can be bent by hand. Up to 1 inch. Use the next size up hand bender (1/2 rigid= 3/4 EMT bender. 3/4 rigid= 1 inch EMT bender. 1 rigid= 1 1/4 emt bender, you better pack a lunch and bring a friend for that one.) Just remember your 90s won't be a tight as if it where done with a hydro bender.

Feeding a pole barn from a subpanel

Yep, land the equipment ground on the ground bar in both locations and all is good. You could also get by with using a #3 for your application as long as both breakers are 75degree C, which I'm sure they are. But a #2 is a fine choice as #3 is rated right at 100 amps at 75 degree C. Remember if...
