What are good tools from Harbor Freight??

Much in the spirit of a repentant sinner, admittedly, I used to buy a fair amount of stuff there. I don't any more though. Back on topic, here's some of the HF tools that I'm happy with: -20 ton shop press - works as advertised -Big long 1/2" breaker bar - plenty of uses and I ain't broke it...

Tools that never quite made it

Strap an LED on top, package it with a Gator Grip socket, and sell it on late night TV with a tagline "lets you see your work, grabs any nut or bolt, fits in tight spaces!". Instant millionaire... ;) Probably the 'strangest' tool I have is a closed end wrench where the closed end is attached to...

    AutoBody Tools

May sound weird, but Sears has a Martin 7-piece set for $130. Sears part number 00950467000, Martin part number 647K. Everywhere else sells it for almost twice that price. I bought one. The real deal. :) Comes in a big Martin box with foam that surrounds each of the tools.

    Craftsman Club Flyer... an experiment

LOL. I bought those prybars last year, at this price (and the 34-piece Craftsman screwdriver set for $19.99 as well). They works good fer pryin' at stuff. :D

Controlling Fluids in your shop (coolant, oil, etc)

Buddy of mine recently gave me some 5 gallon donut frosting buckets with lids. They're nice (they're square and the plastic is very heavy). He didn't want me disposing of my oil at his place using quart bottles any more. Last time I brought him 35 gallons... mostly in quarts. He told me (without...

    Engine Stand

I have a couple of the AC Delco engine stands. They're Chinese built, but they have held up pretty well thus far. I had a Central Machinery (HF) stand, and that droooooped pretty bad after a while. The AC's haven't drooped yet. Got 'em at O'Reillys for about $50 ea. They also match the nice AC...

Compressor to hard line flex hose?

    Here's mine: http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=63236 Got it at McMaster-Carr. Custom made, 2' long, part number 5268K59 (Master-Flow Oil-Resistant Multipurpose Hose W/Brass Male X Female Fittings, 3/4" Id, 300 PSI: Feet:2). Cost - about $30. Fittings are 3/4" NPT...

    A new work bench thread!!!

That butcher block countertop is just too pretty. I couldn't use it. ;) I'm a top surface mauler. Nothing is off limits. Welding, chemicals, heavy stuff dragged across it, improper use of hammers and chisels, etc. I ain't shy about working over a work bench. ;) I have a large table picked up...

    ALI/ETL Certicication for Auto Lifts!

While it's terrible that someone was killed due to this lift, looking at that last document, I see it more as operator error than manufacturer at fault. Basically he improperly balanced a 9400 lb vehicle on a 10000 lb capacity lift. He was near capacity, and didn't set the vehicle on the lift...

    Amazon $25-50 off tools

Yeah, I bought a Milwaukee framing nailer from Amazon. At the time I bought, it was $269, but you got a free $50 gift cert to Amazon, and then if you bought framing nails, the nails were free and you got $30 off (go figure). So the nailer and nails ended up costing me about $189 (well, I spent...

    Now these are exspensive vises

I'd almost feel bad treating it like a vise, for that kind of price. ;) My poor $40 vise is covered in hammer blows, welding splatter, wire brush marks, grinder marks..... But it's still old faithful. :)

    Plumbing I-R Compressor

Sho nuff. I built my copper air system in March. I was paying ~$13.50 for 10 ft of hardline Schedule L copper. I bought 70 feet of it. Just for grins I walked by the copper aisle yesterday at Home Depot. $31.50 for the same tube now. Ouch. :shocking:

I want to build some shelves...how to?

(looks at picture on computer screen) (looks up on wall - hey, that looks familiar) I use those triangulars in my home office. I have paperwork boxes on the shelf up there. They hold plenty of weight. I have 3 holding a 6 foot shelf, with probably 60 lbs of papers on it. They... work. I think...

    Shop expansion...

I'm getting ready to submit these drawings to both the boss (aka da wife) and get a few quotes from contractors. In the picture, you'll see my shop as it sits. It's got an open shed area that's got a caliche rock / dirt floor, and no fourth wall. I won't keep anything (important) in the area...

Disposing of used fluids and oils

Is brake and power steering fluid in the same class as oil and ATF? I have a few containers of used brake / PS fluid around, not sure where to dump 'em. I have a buddy who owns a shop where I take my oil & ATF, he has a 300 gallon bin that he puts it in. My last trip donated 33 gallons - mostly...
