Wiring a 4 foot fluorescent fixture to a garage door opener

I have one of these switches wired in my detached shop. When i open the front door I have 4-5 incandescent lights that come on. It is nice when I just need to run in and get something quick - I don't have to flip on the fluorescents and the lights turn off after 10 minutes or so. They also...

what is the best material to put on walls

This is what I have been thinking about as well - thanks for the pic. Can you tell me what metal product you used or specifics on the panels (panel width, rib height, etc.)? Your shop looks very nice. It looks like the "R-Panel" on the McElroy Metals website...

Dumb electrical question of the day

First, I want to thank all for the replies - it's very helpful and I appreciate all the comments. Secondly, Charles I agree that I need to do my homework and not rely on what I read here. However, based on what research I have done so far, the advice is pretty darn good. I took another look...

Dumb electrical question of the day

My panels are back-to-back. By outside disconnect do you mean breaker switches inside the meter box cover? If so, then that's what I have. However, in the inside panel the neutral and ground bars are combined. So I assumed that I needed 3 conductor service cable - 1 for each power bus and...

Dumb electrical question of the day

Well, that's a good question. All of the wiring was in place inside of the building. The only thing that was not in place was the connection from the breaker panel to the meter. The county inspector not only passed my electrical inspection, but also gave me a C.O. before the power company...

Dumb electrical question of the day

Hello all, I recently passed the electrical inspection on my shop and the power company has done their thing (installed a new transformer, trenched/buried cable, installed meter panel, etc.). Now I need to connect the meter panel to the service panel inside the shop. I have done a lot of...

Finished Bonus Room over Garage - pics

Very nice. I have a similar room above my shop, but it is not finished yet. What wall covering did you use on your garage walls? I am about ready to insulate and I don't really want to use sheetrock - looking at alternatives. Maybe I shoudl start a new thread :bounce:

    Garage update

I found a plan on the internet that was as close to what I was looking for and modified it to be what I wanted. I looked for months before I settled on this one. The plan called for 12x8 and a 12x14 doors - I changed it to 12x10 and 16x14 doors which required some creativity with the roof...

    Wiring for lift

Thanks - ceiling it is. I have a 15ft ceiling, but I suppose I could make a pigtail if needed.

    Wiring for lift

I am in the process of wiring my new shop. All 110v outlets are 4 ft apart and 48" from the floor all the way around the building :shocking: - probably overkill, but I'd rather have too many than not enough. I will probably place six or so 220v outlets (should I do more?) strategically around...

You're right. I guess I should have said it's where my compressor will live when finished. :pimpflash

    Garage update

There are no special considerations, that I am aware of, for windloading in my area. I do not live near the coast. However, at the recommendation from my door man, I am going with a commercial panel door instead of a rollup. According to him the wider rollup doors tend to de-rail in high wind.

    Garage update

The big door is 16x14 and I will have to get back to you on the manufacturer. I was going to go with a rollup door, but my door guy suggested going with a new commercial type panel door as the wide rollup doors tend to derail with wind. I don't remember how many yards of concrete I used. I...

    Garage update

Yes, the room on the back is for my compressor and whatever else I can fit in there for storage. I now wish that I had made that area a little bigger. Thanks for all the nice comments.
