I leave my 40x60 at 40 degrees and turn it up to 65 when I'm in there, with a 5ton electric furnace it takes 30-45 min to get it up to temperature. I have a basic wifi thermostat and turn it up on my way home.

Thanks, The house is the same basic floor plan that my dad has built 3 times now for his own house so I know it will work great for us.
We also decided to keep the bedroom in the shop and convert it to an office since I start a new job Monday and will need an office at home.
The shop is heated so no worry of anything freezing, I only anticipate turning it on when we have a bunch of people over for a party/bbq, family needing a place to stay during holidays/vacations, or if the wife kicks me out of the house for a couple days :beer:

How do you know there is a void under the garage floor? Any garage should be backfilled with rock to prevent this. obviously this isn't always the case with older homes or cheap builders though...
I'd wait, I don't see lumber prices going up anytime soon. I got a lumber bid in September for my house, they delivered it this month and told me it would be $1800 cheaper because lumber prices were falling.
