What does your dryer's name plate and/or manual state? My dryer says 10 AWG only if the length between the breaker and receptacle is less than 15 feet. Otherwise 8 AWG. note: I'm a DIYer, not an electrician so I'm not comfortable telling you exactly what to do, just offering a suggestion.

Are you talking about the whip that goes from the dryer to the receptacle, or are you installing a new breaker in your panel and feeding a new dryer receptacle?

Yep, it's common in such scenarios. That is how mine was done.

I had the same stump problem. The digger dug it up then he filled the hole with sand, compacting it every few inches with a plate compactor.

Home Depot is routinely 2x-3x the cost of the local supplier -- when it comes to wire. I called them out on it once, and they just said "we'll be happy to match the competitor's price." I think they're trying to screw a few here and there and make a few more bucks.
