    learning electrical from scracth

I'm a DIYer like you, and I think your barn restoration project is impressive. I rewired my basement 2 years ago. I read each of my self-help books several times before I started anything. Then I pulled them back out each time I did something new. I spent many hours Googling how to do...

What would you do different on your garage

My ceiling height is 11' but my doors are 8' tall. Couldn't go higher than 8' on the doors under the eaves because I have huge headers there. But I also have an 8' tall door under a gable, and that header is small enough that I could've put a 9' tall or maybe a 10' tall door in. I don't...

What was your first tool set?

For high school graduation, each of my brothers and I were given a good Craftsman starter set. My dad was a big Craftsman fan. A 2pc roller cabinet with plenty of tools to fill it. I don't remember what all was in it, but it was maybe 200 pieces. I still have every piece organized along with...

Covering up the furnace and water heater

I had a similar problem in my basement. As you entered my house, the first thing you saw was the stairs leading down to the basement, and the UGLY furnace. I had friends, handymen, HVAC guys all come out and say "just move it" but it was going to be thousands to redo all the ductwork. I just...

    Sizing a Generator

I have a 6500w Coleman Powermate portable powered by a Robin Subaru engine. I think I've used it for 30 hours total in the past 3 years. I have a well pump, a water softener, a propane furnace, 2 fridges, and a lamp. I don't use the water heater, stove, laundry, etc. There have been three...

    OFFICIAL THREAD: Genius Storage Ideas

i have a 4'x8' access hole framed into the floor of my loft which is 16x52x8. i didn't want to carry things 11' up the stairs. my garage was designed to do this (there are 2 trusses on either side of the opening) so you might not be able to get a 4' opening if all of your trusses are 24" OC...

    my 32x52 with full loft

The only problem with the signs is: they were all used and at the end of their lives 20-30 years ago when the shed was constructed. Up close, they're flaky and beat up, etc. Also, none of them are complete. The builder nailed them up then cut them off. It's marine plywood so it's in good...

How *to* Ship a 24" Breaker Bar

That guy is a genius. Without flattening the box, it has a diagonal of only 18.07363 inches, but flattened it is 25.21687. He might as well have just put a postage stamp on it... Did he ship it media mail?

    Questions for the electricians here

I drilled through 50 year old rough-sawn 2x joists when I rewired my basement. As in bone dry, rock hard, actual 2" thick joists. I had a set of spade bits that didn't do squat, so I bought a Ridgid auger bit with a threaded tip. I don't remember the size, maybe 3/4". Also, when I had to...

    Concrete Finishing Work

Not sure where you are located, but I just paid $3.25 sqft for a 32x52, 4" floor with wire mesh, and they scored it with a concrete saw after it was poured. That is labor and materials. And their work was far superior to any other concrete work I've ever had done.

    my 32x52 with full loft

Up goes the siding! That's where they're at as of today. It is raining, so that will delay them. Probably will have it sided and painted by early next week. I am happy so far with the contractor and his crew. My wife and I really feel like we went out on a limb with this HardiePanel stuff...

    my 32x52 with full loft

And setting the trusses... By the way, my hat is off to this crew. I've heard so many stories of guys showing up late & leaving early and homeowners footing the bill for idle rental equipment. These guys showed up everyday before 7 am, didn't drink coffee, didn't chat, ate lunch in 30...
