Pipes freezing in detached garage with loft bathroom?

We are living in a travel trailer as we build our home and workshop. We have had temps down to 12 degrees with a potable water hose on the outside going from the water tank to our trailer. When we put the heat tape on.....it took 5 min then water was flowing. that stuff is magic!

Poles in ground vs on concrete posts

I can't believe you would recommend that readhead (just joking). This is one of those questions where $$ factors in heavily. would i love to use steel posts mounted to concrete columns....sure..... However there are a some great ways....perma style....steel, etc....lots of...

Poles in ground vs on concrete posts

both work. Drainage away from your building will be key in either method. You will want to have a concrete in the bottom if you use gavel. Depending on the size...will determine the concrete pad. For my lean-to, it was just engineered to have a 18" by 6" pad in the bottom of the hole with...

    pole building - Gravel size

Good point - I will be pouring a slab over the floor and post once compacted. Plus there is a 2' overhang and gutters.

    pole building - Gravel size

Got the answer - There was a footnote from the engineer: 6" Concrete pad at 2500psi 5/8 - 3/4- gravel or crushed rock The contractor should ensure the gravel is saturated prior to compacting and is compacted every 6". Going to rent an air tamper for $50 and a Diesel Air Compressor at...

    pole building - Gravel size

I don't want this to be a discussion of concrete vs permacolumn vs gravel vs draypack concrete vs....whatever... Question - For those of you who have - What is your recommended size of rock (with or without particulates) to back-fill a pole barn post? Details - Recently got a building...

THHN or Romex - Pole Building - New construction

Going through the threads there doesn't seem to be any thoughts on using Romex vs THHN - in - Conduit (Romex would not be in Conduit). Building a 40x72 and have the option of either doing Romex and then closing the wall (option...)...or using EMT conduit with THHN ran inside. My initial gut...

Anyone experiencing any LED light failures?

regular LED bulbs - no problems Smaller chandler style (for and outside fixture) and 2 out of 6 died after 3 years. Yes, i would do it again but get fixtures with the bigger e26 bulb (normal size)

    e26 vs t8 led

I agree a standard bulb has about a 220 degree light spread which means my rafters are getting a little too much light. My understanding is that a T-8 style LED Uses around 17 Watts and is about 1700 Lumens A 110 degree downward flood bulb is about 1520 Lumens at 14.5 watts. So a single...

    e26 vs t8 led

Question - Why not use screw in led bulbs and fixtures instead of t8 style led fixtures? Costco has the LED t8 style for $30. Costco also has screw in 100 watt bulbs for $2 and home depot has the fixtures for 1.50. Seems like I can put in 8.5 lights for every one of the t-8 style dual led...

Need a plan review for workshop

I agree with this. Moving a full sheet in at 4x12....really tough to get it in the table. if you are mainly doing small things...might be fine. I would combine the two metal areas...move furnace room to the right...Then double door the metal room to allow easer moving in of material.

    Standalone garage design

depends on the construction method. I just got my preliminary back from Alliance Engineering http://www.aeoregon.com/ They do work in 40 states and the pole barn I just got from them seems spot on for a little over $1,300. I did have to find a local truss company though. Going for permits...

    blown-in wall insulation...not foam...pole barn

    blown-in wall insulation...not foam...pole barn

lots of threads quickly pass over the idea of using blow-in insulation for pole barns....why? i am going for my permits for a large 40x70x13 workshop that will have th posts on 12' spacings. why not go metal siding, vapor barrier..plastic then blow in attic style insulation to get a r18...
