Ubiquitous New Guy "this or that" Thread

I think Channellock is the best bang for the buck in pliers. You should look at the Wilde pry bars/punches/chisels that Harry Epstiens sells. Craftsman offers rebranded Vaughan and Nupla hammers at reasonable prices.

    Needle nose pliers?

I don't think the tips of any of my long nose pliers (including: Channellock, Klein, and Knipex among others) are ground to match perfectly. I can't see that it really matters though as long as the jaws and cutiing blades are alligned correctly. Be sure to check out Channellock's Code Blue...

    Some tools don't feel good.

Thanks for the opinion, Trucky. I've been thinhaking about picking up some Pratt-Read drivers, but haven't had any experience with them.

    Columbian vise restoration

Nice vise. Even after being beat up and left for dead, she looks very useful. I can't comment on your girlfriend, but Grandpa is definitely a keeper!

    Harbor frieght, india?

Corporate heads make these decision, but consumers allow it. Corporations only make money if they are able to sell their products. If a company cannot sell its products it must either offer different products or go out of business. If the American people refuse to buy the global Ranger then Ford...

+1 That's a great deal on a very good grinder. You need to add that seller to your Christmas list.

    Need SK socket advice

+1. Your sockets look fine. I have many SK sockets (all made long before the alleged quality problems) and my sockets exhibit the same characteristics that yours do. In fact many of the older ones came with a very rough exterior finish (they were chromed, but not polished). SK has always made...

    Show your new tool arrivals

Those short SK DBEs are sweet! I like all those Superbars, and the KD wrenches as well. The KD wrenches were made in the USA by Danahar. They replaced the old KD line with the new Gearwrench line.

    A "better" 6-inch grinder?

That is one of the good ones, and it was made in the USA.

    A "better" 6-inch grinder?

I wouldn't say the block motors are as good as Baldors, but they are great grinders. They will outperform Chinese models sold today with hp ratings twice as high as their own.

    A "better" 6-inch grinder?

That appears to be a good old American made block motor grinder. If it is $20 is a bargain. If it is a block grinder, the model number will begin with a manufacturer prefix of 397 or 257.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The Columbian Hardware Company dates back into the 1800s. I forget when they were founded exactly, but I want to say 1870s or 1880s. The name was used until 1926 when it was changed to The Columbian Vise & Manufacturing Company.
