    Old Allen wrench uses

    Handy for fixing trail damage.

Any welders out there, how would you weld this metal rod to make a floating shelf bracket?

Drill and weld on the back to eliminate the need to clearance the shelf for the weld fillet. Sag should not be an issue as those type of shelves are not suited for heavy loading. The issue is not the bracket, but the attachment to the wall.

That stainless drink cup could use being polished up a bit to match the trim piece.

    Let's see your axes

A couple axes I've been cleaning up this week to keep myself amused. The first is a double bit axe that was my grandfather's apparently. I've had it for many years, it's always been rusty and though I had replaced the handle years ago, much abuse left it broken again. The head has been lying...

Squirrel damage to shop and house

The population we have is fairly local to our city and general area but are spreading causing concern for native species which are much smaller and can be out competed by the larger greys. They escaped from captivity back in the 1930s due to a flood.

Squirrel damage to shop and house

The ones I catch get to go cage diving in the rain barrel. We have eastern grey squirrels that are not natural to the area and thus are an invasive species and not protected. I used to catch quite a few when I first got after them, now we have a few bobcats frequenting our neighbourhood and...

    MP&C Shop Projects

If you want to wrap the wiring instead of using loom, you can get wrapping tape that is non adhesive. It is a bit stretchy and you can wrap the wires fairly tight with it and it clings to itself as you wrap, but does not adhere at all so no sticky mess on the wiring. You do need a single wrap of...

Need a way to shut off at night or a Timer switch for air compressor 220v

I did the same but wired the valve to the shop lights.

How is the wingnut securing the air cleaner lid going to handle the weight of the coil? Its a clever idea, but I'd be concerned about the offset weight causing the air cleaner to want to tip and unseal. Or is the coil being secured to the engine and this is just to conceal it?

    Pulley math

While this method will determine the ratio correctly it is unnecessarily complicated. The same result will come from simply dividing the pulley diameters. In your case: 7 divided by 3.5 gives you a 2:1 ratio which translates to mean for every 2 rotations of the drive pulley the driven pulley...

When you need a frame table

Nice truck, I'm apparently old as it's hard to wrap my head around classifying a 79 as antique. Classic for sure, but to me antique implies much older. :p Glad you could fix the damage.

What Happened to this Rear Axle? Snapped and then Welded Back Together?

I agree that someone made up a replacement axle from one or two that were not the right fit. Any axle I've seen break has created a nasty spiral fracture that could not be re-welded like that.

Shop Basics - The Over Looked Items

I use a cheap dollar store rubber spatula to scrape the oil dregs out of the tray into the bottle to go for recycling. Since I started doing that I have a lot less mess from the pans.

    What to call your haven?

Mine is a Garage/workshop. Cars, truck and motorcycle parking make it a garage. Tools, equipment and supplies make it a shop. Not a cave, it's not dark damp and smelly. My maker space is the area of the kitchen counter where the coffee maker is situated.

Was it worth it for you?

I built an addition onto my existing garage on our large city lot several years ago. I had initially proposed a larger addition than what was finally approved. Had to jump through a ton of hoops and did a lot of paperwork and paid a lot in fees, but it was worth it. Even though I ended up with...

How was thee cherry trim finished? Cherry is a photo reactive wood and will darken to its characteristic deeper reddish tone with time and exposure to sunlight. Even with stain and finish, it will likely change colour over time. Hopefully the wax does not end up lighter than the wood.

    The Milwaukee addiction thread! :)

I've been slowly switching over my cordless tools to Milwaukee's and have had my eye on an angle drill for a bit now. I hesitated because I was most interested in the smaller M12 drill but had no other 12v tools yet. That meant having to start out with batteries for it as well. No issue with...

    Improving basic dust collector

My experience having added a cyclone to my dust collector is that it runs far more consistently over time as it allows almost no dust to reach the bag and filter. That means the pleated filter does not get loaded up reducing the air flow. It also means I have a much larger dust capacity with the...
