My new 3,500 lb cast iron precision work table

I don't post much on here but figured people would like to see my new table. I'd been wanting a better work surface for TIG welding and general inspection and found this beauty at an auction. 48" x 120" x 4.25" so I'm estimating the weight at about 3,500 lbs. It's webbed cast iron and...

Sounds good. Send me a DM if you'd like me to make it for you- I probably won't see a reply on this thread.

    Machinist Commission Request

The head of the bolt looks odd- is it dished out? It may be lighting, but it also looks like a gold chromate finish that's worn away everywhere else, or??? My lathe won't cut metric threads, but a die can cut the threads easily enough. Have to see what sizes of 4140 I have in the garage.

Wilton No. 60 Swivel Jaw Vise pin

Here’s what I used- Flexbar quick setting putty.

Wilton No. 60 Swivel Jaw Vise pin

Thanks for the reply! The original pin was threaded for ease of removal, which I'll duplicate here. I'm not a mold maker by any stretch, so I don't think I'll try stoning the hole to find high spots, but that would be really good. I've got a rotab and mill, but my thinking was to use the taper...

Wilton No. 60 Swivel Jaw Vise pin

Certainly seems possible that a bad pin has made it uneven.

Wilton No. 60 Swivel Jaw Vise pin

Interesting idea with the wood dowel. Can definitely see that it could have been messed up in the past- this is certainly not out of the question.

Wilton No. 60 Swivel Jaw Vise pin

Hmm, it's a very shallow taper- 1.428 degrees by my gage ball measurements. Had a friend double check my math and he got the same result I did. The measurements above are by definition kinda rough- measuring a tangent on a cone is impossible to do accurately with calipers. By putting a small...

Wilton No. 60 Swivel Jaw Vise pin

That's basically what I did with the rubber- it's made for inspection and CMM work to conform to parts. The problem comes with measuring it- on a sine plate sitting on my granite plate, then setting the sine plate to be level to the granite. The rubber is so soft that the indicator can depress...

Wilton No. 60 Swivel Jaw Vise pin

I've got a 1960's vintage Wilton No. 60 6" swivel jaw vise and the lock pin was damaged when I got it. I foolishly didn't keep the original and made a new one that was close, but not on the exact taper. I'm trying to remedy that but after 5 sample pins in aluminum, I'm not dialing it in close...

New lathe in the shop- Monarch Series 60 22.5x54”

Paint is original. I’ve done rust removal and cleaning but the paint is as-is. I bought it March 3rd and did the handwheel last weekend, so a month and a half or so overall.

New lathe in the shop- Monarch Series 60 22.5x54”

Just depends on what you’re using it for. If you turn larger items and use high speed steel tools you’ll be fine forever. To turn small diameter stock with carbide you need more speed. I was able to sell the LeBlond for quite a bit more than I paid for this Monarch so it was a no brainer to...
