Reviving this old thread since I just bought a Buafflo 18 and have torn it down. Interestingly, mine also had a wood piece in the split of the front of the head. They must have put it there at the factory after customers kept cracking castings by cranking down too much on those adjustment screws.

Yup, silicon bronze. Local supply house only sell aluminum bronze in 50 lb boxes and I never think to order a smaller box.

Thanks! I was just concerned with forum etiquette- I am a profiteer on this one and don't really care if some people disapprove. I buy a lot of keepers, but this was bought with the intention of flipping it over for cash to spend on welding supplies and machine tooling.
