Prewiring Network and Cable - Worth the Cost or DIY?

I had ~30 runs of cat6,~18 RG6, and ~25 22awg alarm wires ran in my new place. The general was going to give me the time frame to run all the cable myself, but I also had the electrician bid the LV cable as well. Best $ I ever spent. The electricians did amazing and clean work. The wall...

    Orienting a 5-15 receptacle

I had to turn my Mom's RV outlet ground up so the 90 degree cord was not strained. This way it hangs cleanly down the wall and over to the trailer. I'll rotate the outlet as needed, based on typical use. I do like ground up for shops personally.... but if I have a device with a 90 degree...

Pre wiring for a ductless minisplit

Interchangeable terminology. :D I'd rather see 120/240 in writing myself as there is a difference... but most of us are in North America. We'll assume that you mean 240 when anything other than 208 is mentioned.

    Sub Panel Yes or No?

I had a whole thing written, but scrapped it for the question of how well would your new AFCI breakers play with you ham radio? If you need separation of space between your transmitter and main panel, it might not be a great idea to run a sub panel. It might be just as easy to pull 3 12awg...

have primary 200a panel in Garage, want a sub panel for garage

In the network world, this is called over-subscription and is standard practice. The same applies to many other fields as well. In your electrical panel, you can have way more breakers than you have available amps feeding it. I can have 400A of breakers behind my 200A main. The problem is...

Attached garage subpanel for EV charging

IIRC, the tesla wall charger only needs 240V and ground, no neutral. You can get probably get away with #2 thhn and 1" EMT conduit, maybe a ground if you are so inclined. The tesla wall charger has decent instructions. If you do add conduit and panels, run it through a meter pan so you have...

    which breaker box style

I went with a 80 circuit 40 space copper bus Siemens panel for a new build. My only regret? ONE local hardware store carries 1 each of the 15A and 20A AFCI breaker. None of the local big stores carry the Siemens breakers. The do carry the eaton stuff, but Siemens / Eaton are not listed to...

Using a welder as a generator?

Thanks guys for the input. $1600 does seem a bit low for something that retails up in the $10k range. I'm going to keep looking in to this and keeping my eye on the market. Also, never though of it, thanks for the tip on checking serial numbers. Plus with a welder, I'll get extra jeep guy...

Using a welder as a generator?

I wanted to ask the question to the forum here, as some of you have decent sized gensets for your homes. Part of my new build, I have a generator circuit (and lockout) installed in my main panel. I would like to get a 7.5kW -10kW generator to run the house in any extended power loss situation...

Generator to back feed house from garage

This is why we have opinions and facts. I'm glad I'm not your neighbor. I'll leave this here: There are numerous power company videos about back feeding dangers. You're apparent lack of care scares me, but might not be a problem for very much longer. :shocking: edit: video starts at 19:30

That feeling you get when all of your romex is combed

Not sure about trimming, but the sales photos make it look like you can. The point of buying the wireguide load center over a standard one is because it has full-length neutral bars as well as little plastic guides to stuff the neutral coils in to neatly. But oh well, at least there are...

Generator to back feed house from garage

my bad,,, I was mainly pointing out the price... It doesn't take $1000 to install something that meets code. But it will take a lot of effort. But that is usually the case at home depot. The cheaper something is, the more labor and hassle it takes to install correctly. :p

That feeling you get when all of your romex is combed

We went over these points in the initial walk-through. Concerns of inferior materials were mitigated by my credentials as a network engineer and wasn't buying cheap-*** CCA cables. We talked about other things like speaker and alarm wire, and wanted to make sure I had ordered all of the...

Generator to back feed house from garage

Here is an interlock unit made specifically for my panel. (Siemens) Siemens-Standby-Power-Interlock-Kit-150-Amps-and-up This was installed when the AHJ inspector approved the panel and meter. Legal and UL listed. Here is the panel with everything else installed. There is no way that the...

Generator to back feed house from garage

As always, it's the AHJ, adopted NEC code cycle, and any local service providers' rules you need to follow. Places like Florida have stupid LEGAL blocks from you back feeding your house with a generator, interlock or not. They key point to making a typical generator back-feed safe, is that...

That feeling you get when all of your romex is combed

I've had that experience, and it *****. When I had a few contractors bid the job, they all invited their subs. I got to speak with the electrician and let him know that I had some requirements to feel them out. Surprisingly, a few different general contractors used the same electrician from...
