Tamper Proof Outlets / NEC Requirement

I'm going to be dealing with this soon enough... I installed new 200A service panels and dropped a few 20A circuits for my builders. The inspector had nothing to say about the outlets not being TR. My only ding was forgetting to strap my new ground line to the gas line, and he had a good...

    Homemade alarm system/noise maker.

Magnetic reed switches and relays are really simple to connect up to doors and windows. 140db alarm is pretty good, as truck horns seem to "blow through" the air quickly and take quite a bit of CFM to keep up.

    Surface mount conduit...

i'm going to be putting my garage together after the rest of the house is built, and I have settled on running 3/4" surface mount EMT everywhere. I don't want to keep parts for 3 different conduit sizes. Sure, I'll have 1.25" for my 100A sub, but 3/4 for everything else.... 3/4" is pretty...

    Repurposing Stove Circuit?

keep in mind North american units are basing internal timers and other things on a L-L 240V @ 60Hz, an EU spec machine is L-N 230V @ 50Hz. It all depends on too many factors.

    Repurposing Stove Circuit?

Clearly you have never owned a good espresso machine. :p Actually, to convert down to 120V and back up to 240 is going to be a huge efficiency loss. It's possible yes, but now you will need a up-converter that can handle resistive loads at huge amperages at 120V. Not really that practical...

    Hi-Definition

I have mixed feelings about CCA. On one hand, it's in a wall and not subject to movement or stress beyond original installation. On the other hand, it's CCA. Ideally you're wiring your house once, pay the extra $100 per box and do it "right". I'm sure your builder charged you for non-cca...

    Interesting power issue

My mom had a contractor built house done recently. The laser in the back bedroom was causing light flicker something awful. The culprit? 14AWG wire, daisy chained and back-stabbed through about 10 outlets on the branch. The home warranty paid for an electrician to drop a 12AWG from the nearby...

I like the structured cabling idea, as it has everything you need and you only need to pull once. As for the other bits of this thread. My house that I am paying money for, my rules. Find a contractor that will work with you and for you, not against you.

    Interesting power issue

Something is wrong if that load is making the house flicker. I'd still check for neutral problems or back-stabbed outlets. My espresso machine is 1600W and doesn't cause my garage lights to flicker. It's a triac controlled heating element, and will pulse to maintain an even pressure in the...

    Repurposing Stove Circuit?

If the current outlet is 50A the wire size is going to be ~6AWG. Depending on what size outlet the espresso machine takes, cramming 6awg wire in a outlet not rated for it, will be a problem. using the existing 6awg wire in the wall is a non-issue as long as you down-size the breaker for that...

    Interesting power issue

same thing happened to me in a bathroom light. The switch for the room was on it's way out. I took apart the switch after replacing it, the internal contacts were starting to turn blue. You could have the same issue in a branch breaker or even the main for the house. Never hurts to look...

    Cable/WIFI to detached garage

To get down to it... UTP CAT5/6/7/whatever, there really isn't a direct electrical connection between ethernet devices. The first component in an ethernet adapter / switch the cable touches is a 1:1 transformer. This is also what allows power over ethernet to work. You can bias the physical...

    Cable/WIFI to detached garage

my sarcasm was missed :( let's try it again.... It's low voltage, no code required! /s

    it's low-voltage cable, it's fine. :lol_hitti

    Cable/WIFI to detached garage

^x3 Extra conduit would be the great way to go. Personally as a network engineer, I would run the cat5e/6 along with the rg-6 or whatever spec coax you want. I'd rather have the cable unused than not there at all.

Kitchen Water Boilers... wiring up an idea?

For my friend who moved back from the EU, the espresso machine was a good $1K plus a few hundred more for the grinder. If you check some coffee snob forums like homebarista, you will find there is quite a niche market for EU spec machines, as their heating element wattages tend to be much...

Melted large (blue) wire nut: No breaker trip

I should clarify, I pulled these out of my kitchen remodel. The "thing" on the far left is what happens when a toaster and 1000W microwave are on at the same time.
