Putting a basement under my garage (& back yard) ?

Planning to excavate to the property line is a mistake or possibly a disaster in the making, IMHO. (I'd also ditch the idea of increasing the garage footprint, the extra few feet isn't worth it). Find the geotech engr for that and hire them next. My point is that the soil conditions may make...

Putting a basement under my garage (& back yard) ?

Reading through this, IMO the critical issue is going to be the stability of the soil (during winter). The decision of how to deal with the garage depends very much on the soil conditions. For example what's the plan for shoring the soil during excavation? If none, have you planned for a 45*...

    New Member - Need Opinions

Great looking floor and good choice on the cracks. I'm actually surprised to see joints in a floor that size (guessing ~20x20). P.S. You should consider adding a location into your profile.

    Looking for some layout help

If the 8 foot fixtures are doubles (e.g. 4x 4 foot bulbs) then I think you're about perfect. I have 24 4 foot bulbs in a 20x20 with 9 foot ceilings. With 5k temperature bulbs, the lighting is white and bright but not blinding.

Shops lights: Big box brand (Lithonia) or Mercury brand from a jobber?

I just finished putting 12 4' Lithonia T8 wraps (SB-2-32-GESB) from HD. No RFI and with 5k bulbs in my 20x20 garage I have a nice even bright environment.

    my Porcelain tile garage project

What are you talking about? Porcelain is denser than concrete and absorbs less water (i.e. won't 'pop' if a wet spot is hit with slag).

    Garage Electric Feedback

FWIW, HomeDetest pricing has the upgrade at ~$1.25/foot for the wire, (and the recept. is actually cheaper, probably offset though by the breaker bein 50 vs. 40).

What was missed? I saw him using the load side of the first GFCI as the protect for the rest.

    Garage Electric Feedback

It's just future proofing. It appears the outlet is only a couple of feet from the panel (so minimal expense to upsize and run another conductor). Perhaps someday a Tesla (or other elec. car) needs a plugin, or someone decides pottery is fun and wants a kiln, or a vistitor wants to plug in...

    Garage Electric Feedback

Everything looks reasonable, but I would make the welder circuit be 50a and use 6/3 to a 14-50R. The welder can be adapted if it has a 6-50P.

Can sliding barn doors be mouse tight?

Get a barn cat. Feed it when looking thin (and mice aren't present)

Electronic ballasts are not what you might have experienced with older t12 fixtures. Disposal is typically just a trip to a recycling center.

Rookie finally laying porcelain tile in my single

tip, hire a 'gofer' ... A pre-teen can hand you stuff, and would be happy to get ~$5/hour cash. Eliminates the off-knees, on-knees pain (or down-ladder, up-ladder pain). A teen might be trainable to mix batches of thinset (or prep in other ways), and would be happy at ~$10/hour. An out-of-work...

I used to hoard it. Now I pile it during dry season, whatever didn't get picked from for a year got dumped in spring. Repeat.

    Rob's 20x20 refurb

It has been a while since I've updated, but progress is being made. 1) Wiring is done (aka. I won't need to get into a panel again) I have: * 1 120v/15a circuit for lights (3-way switched) * 1 120v/20a circuit along the east wall that is mostly dedicated for 'electronics' * 2 120v/20a circuits...

How to light my new garage.....

One other thing, you may not need an electrician. If you can see the black/white/green(bare)/red colors, it's possible to DIY to code for outlets and lights.
