    One of my installers puts up a sheet metal template at rough in. He has them pre-cut for each brand. It helps keep the other trades from moving his lines around and provides a base to screw the brackets to with more adjustability than just a pair of studs.

    We use "Bear Skins" they come in pads you can hang on your belt and have adhesive on the back to hold them in place.

    I haven't used sawn lumber for stair stringers in many years. LSL's or LVL's, they're perfectly straight, cut cleanly, and the cost difference is insignificant. If you do use 2x12's you would have to go through a pretty big stack to find 3 that would be any good.

    Garage width

    This is a 20x30 garage works fine for me but I don't park 2 cars in it. I converted it from an unfinished shop building that was already on the property. Got a nice 600 sq.ft. apartment above it.
