Built this setup for my dads shop. Thought I'd see what you guys think.

Truly inspired. As others have repeatedly said "a work of art". I love it. You are very talented. And kudos to your dad for forgiving the '50 chevy truck bed thing. :-) John Minton, Architect

What Laser Distance Measurer Are You Using?

Another vote for Bosch. Very accurate. Works great outdoors. I check it with a tape occasionally and it's always spot on. Don't know how I got along without it. John Minton

School me on my roof design

Diggler306, I have been a registered Architect for 35 years and am very comfortable with structural design. Your triple 14" LVL over a 23.6' span will carry a total load of 6,227 lb. assuming you plan on adding a 1/2" gypsum board ceiling. The 2x6 joists at 24" o.c. spanning 11.5' will carry 16...

Homemade or low buck dust collection systems?

Google "Thein separator top hat". The top hat design is a refinement of Phil Thein's baffle separator. The top hat is more complex to build than the baffle, but the reviews are very positive. John

Can you use this strongtie product with 16' posts?

As an architect with 34 years of structural design experience I would say no. The Simpson post base will resist the uplift forces, but will not contribute to lateral resistance. Stay with the traditional pole building techniques. John Minton

    Convoluted Surfacing Wheels for Grinders

Thanks Ckadams. The same wheel I was looking at on Amazon is $3.60 more on Enco, but I ordered from Enco instead since they had the adapter I needed to reduce down to a 1/2" shaft. John Minton

Thanks Terry. That is exactly what I needed to hear. And yes, I am looking at the 3M wheels. John Minton

    Convoluted Surfacing Wheels for Grinders

I'm looking for a recommendation on a convoluted surfacing wheel for prepping aluminum car parts for a high polish finish. The wheels are expensive so I want to make sure I buy the right wheel. The available grits are listed as fine, medium, and course in either silicone carbide or aluminum...

Cold cut saw blade on abrasive chop saw?

Thanks Jack. I remember your post with the video of the circular saw cutting 3/8" thick steel plate. That post is what got me interested in a carbide blade for my abrasive chop saw. I did not realize at the time that a low RPM saw is required. I'll keep my eye on Northern Tool for the saw on...

Thank you all for the replies. Now I have an excuse to buy yet another tool. John

Cold cut saw blade on abrasive chop saw?

Does a 14" cold cut carbide steel cutting saw blade work on a 14" abrasive chop saw or are the rmp's too high on the abrasive saw? I'm guessing the arbor would need a bushing. John

Car Detailing - A "How To" write up/walk through WITH PICS

Great write up Willis. I appreciate the time you took to educate us. And like Larry G said ignore the aholes. There's one or two in every forum. I've seen clay bars mentioned a lot, but never have I seen a description of how they are used. With the exception of the lube mentioned in this thread...

How often do you change blast media?

Make sure you use a good drywall dust filter on that shop vac or it won't last very long. Even better is to add a water trap filter before the shop vac. John
