Dear Houston, Where can I buy small qty metal?

Metal Supermarkets franchise went under a while ago and online ordering is fine but try shipping a 6"x12" solid stock bar. That gets expensive fast. Only places I can find now are the big steel yards. For America's 4th largest city, its a cry'n shame that there isn't a similar shop that can...

Any Ford mechanics in the house? Thought I got a deal on a shoptruck :(

This is a common problem. You see it a lot in the 97-04 F150 Lightnings. They utilized the F250 and up fuel systems. You actually have 2 fuel pumps. One is always on and during heavy load, the PCM kicks the second one. When the secondary resistor pack fails it draws down the main fuel pump to...

Welders/Pipe fitters, got a filler metal question

Turned out good. Thanks for the advice. Overall, heres how it came out... Left side is the first "test" weld... pre-weld material temp was about 190F, on the right I got the material to about 260F before welding. One thing I had trouble with was the splatter. Seems it was excessive...

Tips for Keeping the Garage "Secure"

Its HOT here in TX right now... so anytime I am working in the garage the door is open. I am frustrated by the door to door sales and religious groups that walk right into the garage to sell/save me. I usually keep my Ruger 9mm on top of my tool box as a deterrent. Once they see that, they...

Welders/Pipe fitters, got a filler metal question

Thanks... Its API L80... It was a pup joint that the driller was scrapping because they over torqued it. Don't have any spec on the make-up of the steel. We are building a display for our client and he wants to use these twisted pieces in it. My TIG is a Miller Diversion 180... No ability to...

Welders/Pipe fitters, got a filler metal question

I have a section of L80 pipe and some parts I machined out of L80. What filler metal can you/would you use? I only have a MIG and TIG, no stick process here. The weld has to be strong but will not hold pressure... Thanks.

Fabricators, Which saw would you choose?

Thanks for the replies. I am referring to a "wet" cold saw. The links being posted make horrible cuts, spray sparks and chips all over, and are not very repeatable in cut accuracy. With either saw, I definitely want a coolant system. Either isn't cheap but the work I do can't look cheap.

Fabricators, Which saw would you choose?

I do a bit of fabrication work on the side building displays for industrial equipment so I cut everything from aluminum, brass, copper to stainless and mild steel. I have been using a chop saw for hard metals and a standard miter saw for aluminum. Its time for an upgrade as I am getting busier...
