My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

September 20, 2023 The heat gun is pretty slow, but the improvement to the quality and life of the planer blades cannot be understated. For such a cheap tool I can't believe the amount it has improved my project. It took a couple pieces of wood from looking like above to this: This was one...

Below 265 SQ/FT Unconventional Post & Beam Shed Build 12'x14'

Added some "shelves" to help deal with the excess and reclaimed wood from my porch project (see thread in sig). I used some collapsible brackets - cheap stainless - supposedly rated for 700 lbs (they are NOT), but they are a solution that allows me to drop them out of the way if I use up the...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

September 16th, 2023 I started working on the door jamb to the main house. It had been painted repeatedly and did not deserve another coat of paint: I used the heat gun to peel off the paint and a belt sander and some hand sanding to improve the surface: September 17th, 2023 I did some...

Below 265 SQ/FT Unconventional Post & Beam Shed Build 12'x14'

My wife got some flower beds out front of the shed. I believe it will be mostly mums and crocuses. My wife had a vision of a lit area to the side and behind the shed, she felt it was simple. Of course, it wasn't so simple. I got that wrapped up this weekend as well. Still more things to...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

Continued... The board fit in perfectly with a little persuasion. Here is how things sit today, I have a floor. This process was helped greatly by the early efforts in squareness (for the whole construction) and there was a little bit of luck that on the last row I only had to trim the...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

Going into labor day weekend I made a big push since it was likely the last weekend I have available this month. I worked with one good friend on Saturday to get all the paneling whitewashed and put up. Some of the paneling came out whiter. It's a bummer but I'll live with it. Sunday I...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

In the past we have used these cellular shades. I stole this image from Lowe's: They are inside mount and seem to achieve the goal of keeping the woodwork visible. I believe this is the direction she will go again. We're not big on curtains except in rooms that require regular sleeping.

Thanks. A lot of effort. Hopefully it pays off in the long term.

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

Life has been busy. I cut a floor vent and got a duct boot, but it was wrong and I ended up with this one for a 6x12 vent. Turns out I ended up over the foundation so I needed a low profile boot like above: All taped up and slowly ventilating the space: I pulled the current basement duct...

It may not seem like a big deal but with the electrical wrapped up I was able to finish insulating. I also managed to get one more set of casings wrapped up. For a brief moment it feels like the end could be in sight. I'm pushing to try and get MOST of it wrapped up by October 1st.

Here's how things look tonight. The frieze and stool are from the boxed beam beauty covers (1x10) brought down to 3/4". The fillet is a slice from a joist when they were cut down to 4 1/2" brought down to 1/2" x 1 1/2". The side casings and apron are floor joists.

Ironically, yes, I purchased one this week. https://www.homedepot.com/p/WEN-Multi-Purpose-Rolling-Planer-and-Miter-Saw-Tool-Stand-with-Extension-Rollers-MSA658T/316950937 My wife hasn't been able to help me out much due to a little one in the house so I got this to act as extra hands. It's...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

New Diablo blade on the saw and started working on getting the trim sorted. Now these being pulled from random floor joists and pieces of wood there is a bit of variation on how this takes the stain. But you know what? It's old and it's an old house, so I don't mind. The trim is rabbeted to...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

The electrical work was mostly wrapped up yesterday. A couple minor things left that I'll take care of during cleanup. To start we got a couple 4" "can" lights completed outside due to impending rain. One: Two: Illuminated: Inside we used (4) 6" "can" lights. These are all wafer style and...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

Slow weekend. Planer blades were pitched up so I started by replacing them: I also cut all the trim down to 4 1/2" width and then planed to 1 1/4" thickness. I think it is coming out reasonably well. The three pieces on the right are very sappy. I'm considering using them as the lower...

I cut down a board for the trim today. I believe I will use 4 1/2" around the windows and 5" around the doors. You have to use your imagination a bit but this is the rough idea: The wood cleaned up nicely. Hopefully some progress this weekend.

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

This weekend I started getting some wood planed and the windows oiled. The re-used wood will be for the trim out of the windows and doors hopefully. I borrowed an old Ryobi AP10 from a coworker and got to work in the shed: Planing wood is like an itch I didn't know needed to be scratched. I...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

As always my plans are bigger than my schedule has time for. I started by marking all the rafter locations. I may not need them but it's difficult to locate them when covered up. Where the ends of the boards meet I utilized a 33 degree angle to allow for weather changes. A few rows in I had...
