My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

I had a little time and made some small progress this weekend. While I was cleaning I found the plans I printed for building the walls. I decided to tack them on their respective walls before insulating for fun. Maybe some fool like me will find them when fixing something in the dark distant...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

I haven't gotten a ton done due to too much time at work. I trimmed back the remaining bead board to the top plate and started insulating some wall cavities: I added shims to the shared wall with the home to make sure the batts don't go anywhere in the future: With the vapor barrier on the...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

One of the major issues I wanted to address with this work was with the floor joists on the second floor of the home. When the wind blows hard from the west (often) it pushes air through the soffit and roof vent and into the cavities between the floor joists. This house wasn't made for...

Open junctions everywhere. It's a mess. My favorite is the 14/3 feeding the barn... Wired with an open junction on the dryer circuit. 30A breaker. I always wondered how my compressor ran so well until I traced that back. I don't run my compressor out there now. We eliminated a large loop of...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

I've been chipping away at the porch. Continued on electrical work and pulling some trim. While I did I found out that the windows in the house are double hung. All the downstairs windows are painted shut so I never saw the extra pulley. While doing the electrical we found that 50% of the...

Milwaukee M18 Chainsaw – Any Good?

I've got one. It's lightweight and pretty straight forward in design. It has a narrow kerf chain - some of the EGO and Greenworks have full size chain that is easier to source locally. Consider what you will use it for. You say light duty work- I think it's perfect. I did some rough cuts on...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

I’m expecting about two weeks total, but I don’t have anything to base that expectation on. They were dead stacked on dunnage under a tarp. I obviously intended to get to them sooner than 6 months. Most of the issues came from condensation not evaporating. Some boards are dry. Some are wet. No...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

Yes. The room is near the air return and I believe we can actually get circulation in there. A branch of the current HVAC sits very near the thermostat. The vent is never open because it causes the HVAC to short cycle. Plan is to re-purpose that branch to feed the room.

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

I've been continuing to work on this slowly and inconsistently. I worked to get everything cleaned up (fiberglass and dirt/debris) from doing the roof. I started checking the wood surrounding the door. It's currently a chalky substance and I wanted to see if I could return at least the...

    Question for the welders

I weld. AWS certified. Etc. I would hire this out. Should be cheap even at $100 an hour. Cheaper than buying a welder. Cheaper than messing it up. And I mean that I’m not even sure I would feel like setting up to weld it :D

    Shop Window Height

At the end of the day you're acting as the architect here. You know what you want to see and what your use case is. If there is something outside that you want to see - put the windows down low (it sounds like you want to see out). If you need light and cabinets and space on the walls, go high...

Tractors and plows and yard equipment, etc....

I think you'll get a lot of opinions on tractors. What are the activities that need to be done around the property? You only listed two that I can see. 1) Mow 10 acres 2) Transport Firewood With just these two someone might say to get a 4x4 B-series Kubota with a belly mower to consolidate...

    Woodshop Ceiling

I like pine ceilings. The weight makes it really nice if you're working alone. I second the white wash if you're concerned about too much wood appearance. I did this at my old shop, on my own, with a ladder. Bottom line is that you should do whatever is necessary to be done with it and get...

Can I frame off of these trusses safely?

Had one like that from HD at my last shop. Don't hit it with a ladder while it's running. Those cast aluminum brackets that hold the blades on are somewhat brittle. It doesn't look nearly as good when it's a 4 blade fan. These things come from China as a kit with 0 parts support. I just...

    20x40 shop

There is a lot of stuff that will nickle and dime you to death. Roof underlayment. Drip edge. Trim (around here 1x material is more expensive than 2x material). Doors and windows that you want to add (didn't see any on your estimate). I'd add 10-20% on top of what you have listed just to make...

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

Well I've been moving along slowly - there are some other work and home items slowing me down, but I did open up the wall a bit to trace the knob and tube... Which also revealed that the blown insulation didn't make it past some nailers they used for sheathing. This is likely the case all...

Below 265 SQ/FT So it begins, building a 12x14 "motorcycle garage" shed

That's what I was thinking! But I do have a tendency to overcomplicate things AND work at a glacial pace.

My Enclosed Porch Thread - A project of continually expanding scope

I always consider my hours. Usually it would “cost” less if I let someone else do the work and I worked - but the reality is I would probably take off work to “supervise” anyway…
