A wrench is but a wrench...

Besides the Gedore BSW I just got, all my other wrenches are basic sets of Craftsman bought when they were still made in the USA. In ratchets and sockets I've been buying williams rather than snap-on, etc.

What Impact Socket for wheel removal

It's for my home use. I have a '94 Jag XJS and my wife an '07 Acura MDX. Along with an occasional friends car. Brands would be ok but mainly looking for 'features' like thin wall etc. As a shade tree mech I'm relearning as I haven't had the time since high school to work on my own cars. I'm...

A wrench is but a wrench...

Thanks for the replies. Any makes/models that are better at those things? I can see why some of them might be more of a personal thing - e.g. sits in hand?

A wrench is but a wrench...

or is it? Was looking at some of the tool threads and started wondering about wrenches - having just gotten a Gedore BSW box-end combo. Wrenches being such simple tools, is there anything different from one wrench to the next? I assume metallurgy but anything else? Is there any design...

Top 5 Must have shop power tools

I'll have to think about the auto half but for the woodshop half - none. I'm a handtool only kinda woodworker. No table saw, band saw, etc - just a till full of old disstons and a new Bad Axe. For the auto (now that I've though about it): Lift, larger air compressor, and some welding...

    Best mobile socket orginizer?

Saw these mentioned in a thread the other day: http://www.ernstmfg.com Can't say anything about them but I might give them a go soon myself. They seem to have a lot of good designs. I have the Lisle ones and they also seemed a bit bulky to me. The magnets do hold very well.

    Boar Hair Brush

Heard good things about Montana. Phil has some over at Detailer's Domain and I trust his stuff. Whatever you get, be sure to do the CD test before you touch your car with it. Caveat: I don't use one personally.

    Best extractor for home use

I currently have a motive power extractor that I've used with pretty good results for changing oil (though it's a bit messy to empty). I have a friend that would like to get an oil extractor for home use. See a lot of folks that have mighty-vac. What would be y'alls recommendation for an oil...

Ubiquitous New Guy "this or that" Thread

Don't earn my living turning wrenches so take my advice with a pillar of salt. I've been very happy with my Williams USA ratchets and sockets. Also love my Wiha screwdrivers. I've just got one of their drive-lok interchangeable head drivers for Christmas and very impressed. Learned over the...

    Floor creepers?

Any suggestions on one for somebody with mobility issues. I have progressive MS so it's hard to get around at times. Would like an American made one and so far leaning towards the standard adjustable Snap-on one.

    Attached or Detached

Hijack my own thread time... Speaking of designing our own retirement home, I'm open to non-conventiona/traditional/new building techniques as well as solar/wind, passive solar, and different hvac options. Is there a good internet resource or forum to start researching this stuff?

    Attached or Detached

Sounds like a both might be the answer. Woodworking will definitely be separate from the auto side no matter what I pick. We're looking at going back to Lubbock. Thanks for all the responses.

    Attached or Detached

As I approach my retirement from the Army for medical reasons, we're planning our dream house in the Texas panhandle. One thing I'm wondering about is whether it would be better to have an attached or detached garage (or both). I'd like to get a lift eventually if that makes a difference...
