    detached garage/shop project planning

Some more tail-chasing... I modelled the loft with 22" floor trusses, based on a span table I found. The models are just to show outside dimensions. It sure simplifies the design over the LVL setup. According to the charts, it would be a good deal stiffer too. Anybody here want to weigh in...

    detached garage/shop project planning

Alright, no responses so I'm gonna try again. I modelled my LVL idea with actual lumber dimensions, aside from the garage headers and trimmers, which are a rough approximation. This model has 10' walls on the "lift bay" side of the shop. 9' walls at the loft side, with 2x12 joists stacked on...

    detached garage/shop project planning

So jack studs? Good. For the beam connection, aren't there top mounted straps and structural fasteners to accomplish this? If it's all too much expense, I can handle one central post for the floor to bear on. Not the end of the world. I'm gonna mess around in sketchup some more to design...

    detached garage/shop project planning

Alright, I've searched the forum and read up a bit more on finehomebuilding.com, among other sources. This is what I've come up with, after studying some span tables for LVL beams from Weyerhauser. I'd like to stress that I'm just doing this for design purposes. I want to see what kind of...

    Gambrel Roof Design

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I'm planning a detached garage at the moment, and I too am interested in the barn plans trusses. I'm a complete novice at design and construction, but I'm eager to learn. I'm looking to build a gambrel roof shop in my yard. 28' wide by 34' long. 10' walls...

    detached garage/shop project planning

Anybody here have an idea for supporting the loft? All doors would be located on the eave side. Engineered floor joists? Steel I-beam or LVL to support the joist carrier? Sorry if my terminology is off, I'm still studying up on the lingo. I got myself a copy of "Graphic guide to frame...

    Moving a shed

Woops, forgot to update. On the 10th, I finished moving it into place. I promise I'll get the pictures sorted. I have some before and after pictures. Unfortunately, we had to boogie to get it moved, didnt have time to take pictures during. All is well, I leveled it and put it back on the...

    BendPak XPR-10A * 2000 F150 SuperCab

I, for one, am glad this thread exists. Down the line, I'm going to be needing a two-post lift. I've been casually researching the pros and cons of each, and this is the first legitimate, quantifiable complaint about the bendpaks I've read about. Most are general complaints about cylinder wear...

    Moving a shed

It does ****, indeed. I'm glad I did it, though. I had time off, and my friend is semi-retired (works about 16 hours a week). Learned a hell of a lot in the course of 2 days. Shut my neighbors up. They told me it was stupid to try. Cut your grass again, assh*les. :)

    Moving a shed

Picture this: Shed is 16' wide, 12' deep. The face of the shed is 16'. I have 2 4x4" skids temporarily bolted 10' apart, centered, running parallel to the sides of the shed. Those skids are what we've been rolling on so far. Pipe sandwich. 4x4 skid bolted to shed metal pipes 2x10 plank on...

    Moving a shed

The job is about half done, as of right now. This shed is way too heavy for the ski idea. Wouldn't budge. I can see that method saving a lot of time and tedium for smaller, lighter sheds though. One advantage of it's beefy construction is that there was no serious damage inflicted. Me and a...

    Moving a shed

I hear ya. I could be very wrong, but I assume the loft is adequate lateral bracing. It's not going anywhere, it supports a lot of weight without bowing. I emptied EVERYTHING out onto the lawn. Gives me the push to finally go through all the junk and reorganize. My wife is terrible for holding...

    Moving a shed

Thanks man! It's probably my poor grammar at fault here. This is from the first post, emphasis added: "I'm looking into buying sections of piping or pre-made heavy duty rollers to bolt to the floor, and pull it with my 4x4" Anyway, I'll give this silly idea a shot, and if it's too much of a...

    Moving a shed

Meeeow ! I got the ski idea here. I was going to go with pipe or rollers on tracks in the first place, if you read the first post. I get your point. Its all perfectly logical. It is a safer way to do it. No need to be rude. The fact of the matter is this is a one time operation. I'm not...

    Moving a shed

This is the original idea that I'm going with. In case anyone is wondering. Skateboard halves will be bolted onto front of the 4x4 skids. Skids are secured to bottom of the shed with carriage bolts and some metal brackets. Spaced 10 feet apart. I have a tow strap with 1 big hook on either...

    Moving a shed

It's a skateboard deck that I took the wheels off of, and sawed in half. Both ends curve upward and have a smooth finish. So I'll get some heavy duty ratchet straps or appropriate sized ropes and put em around the building. That's why I'm asking you guys. More experience/knowledge than me...

    Moving a shed

Gotcha. I have some 3/8" eye bolts I was gonna hook a tow strap to. I'll use LX's spreader bar idea as well. I think I'm going to attempt the ski Idea. I have an old skateboard I can use instead of a snowboard. I've got 4 low and a crabgrass infestation. I wanted to reseed before winter...

    Moving a shed

Ya, I initially borrowed a farm jack from a buddy. But after watching how tos and reading up on em, I ditched the idea. I used 2 cheapo 2 ton trolley jacks on scrap 2x10" boards to jack up one side at a side. Nice and steady. The farm jack was janky as hell.
