Wanted my garage to look like a barn but having issues getting red vinyl siding

Metal or aluminum? What's better? What's cheaper?

Are there any cheap exterior coatings that can make OSB look good?

Just curious... What is the ideal siding material on the affordable side? For interior finishing, other than drywall? For exterior siding, other than vinyl or t1-11?

    Shawn's 32x32 two story Garage

I hear ya. I'm just really excited to get my own shop to work out of, eventually. For your cantilevered balconies, what measures did you need to take to ensure they don't rot or funnel moisture into the building? I just reskimmed the thread and must have missed the detail on their construction...

Excellent! Yeah, it is good for getting a feel for the space, FPS style. There are lots of pre-modelled items to place in there that help simulate the amount of **** a person can accumulate. They're all nice, shiny and expensive. My stuff wouldn't be.

    Steel Building for garage/shop

I inquired with a few companies. Lots of sales pressure and fast talking. I felt instantly uncomfortable. Too expensive for the size building I'm looking to put up anyway.

You're a stand up guy. I am mocking it up in some swedish design program (ecdesign) I have a free trial for. It's great for interior space and floor plans but has inexcusably bad models for staircases and such. Also, I haven't figured out how to model the whole building with a roof. Time...

Awesome build! I love how everything is as practical and affordable as possible. Great use of space. You've done me and many others a huge favour by documenting it all. I'm in the planning stages of a shop of my own. I want the same layout, but 28x32 (max I can fit in my yard)

    detached garage/shop project planning

That is a good idea. I was considering having cutouts with swivelling flaps in the garage door to run hoses to. For car exhaust it works fine but it would be unwieldy with smaller machines. Ive worked with a similar system to the one you described before . Looked expensive tho. Retractable hose...

    detached garage/shop project planning

In summer I like to keep the shop door open to tune carburetors and troubleshoot running conditions . I figured with tall ceilings and some air flow from a powered exhaust fan it wouldn't be so bad. Opening and closing the door all the time would kill any efficiency from an AC system, not to...

Roughly 60' behind the house House has a finished basement with bedrooms. Garage/Shop mostly, for a small engine repair business and small automotive jobs on the side. I'm no master tech, so I don't go crazy with big jobs. For myself, sure. Not on other people's dime. Tires, oil, brakes...

    detached garage/shop project planning

UPDATED 10/17/2016 Hi all, I'm 3 years in on a brand new house, and things are settling down finally to the point where I can address my complete lack of work space. The main usage of the garage would be for vehicle maintenance, small engine repair, and learning how to weld. I've moved a...

    looking to get started

Hi all, I'm new to home ownership, and new to mechanics. Better late than never. I've been doing lots of research lately trying to design a standalone garage/shop and most of my searches end up here. I've learned more on these pages in the past few weeks than all the other search results...
