How did Snap On become the standard?

I’ve never seen “pedantic” defined for four solid pages, but here we are.

How did Snap On become the standard?

    Pretty simple.

    Mandatory Water Cutoff Valve?

We have grid shutdowns for fire mitigation during wind events. That’s been a thing for a long time. That, in my opinion, is not remotely the same thing as giving the utility access to my personal thermostat or appliances at any point in time. There is not a scenario on earth where that would...

    Mandatory Water Cutoff Valve?

I have never heard of such a thing… and there’s no way in hell I’m giving the utility company the authority to dictate what my thermostat is set at, let alone shut it off at their discretion. That’s absolutely crazy.

    Mandatory Water Cutoff Valve?

Install a thermostat that allows the utility provider to set limits on functionality…or allows access in absolutely any way? Perhaps I read that wrong…

    Mandatory Water Cutoff Valve?

Why in the world would someone do this?

    Welding thin metal

I would. It wouldn’t bother me a single bit as long as it proved reliable.

    Welding thin metal

I’d be somewhat surprised if that part wasn’t stainless. No way I’d stick weld that, regardless of material. I’d find someone with a Tig.

    Bench Vise

The deals are still out there, but they are harder to find than they used to be. I got lucky and picked up a very nice 4-1/2” Wilton Cadet for $40 at an estate sale few months ago. I have it priced just high enough that it will probably sell, but if it doesn’t then I’d have to take it home and...

    Bench Vise

I’ve all but stopped going to estate sales on the first day. I find there are plenty of deals on the subsequent days, at a discount. I find a lot more deals on marketplace and at flea markets and random garage sales.

    Bench Vise

There absolutely are. Luckily most of them are lazy, and there’s still plenty of room when you’re willing to hustle

Nahh…I give cool **** to people I like all the time. Otherwise, yeah…I sell things for the most money possible. To do otherwise kinda defeats the point, doesn’t it?

    Bench Vise

I don’t think that was a legitimate accusation…just a reference to the fact that if you want the deals you’ve got to get out and find them.

That’s how I pay the bills. I find cool stuff, but it for as little as I can, and sell it for as much as I as I can. In the process, I get to keep some of the coolest stuff for myself. Easily the funnest job I’ve ever had.

    Car condo owners, in here

There’s that chasm again…for some folks a recession is a missed meal or a repossessed family car. For others, it’s nothing more than different numbers on a piece of paper.

Fuel tank cleaning (car) tips or tricks?

Option 1 - New tank. It’s worth the cost to eliminate the hassle Option 2 - Have it boiled at a radiator shop. This will reveal any pinholes and rust. Not as good as a new tank, but close. The steel fuel lines will be as much of an issue as the tank. Maybe more.

    Oatey Yellow Teflon Tape

It’s a fairly common thing in the stuff in my shop. Oil senders, vacuum ports, water temp senders and ports…all NPT. The intake on my Jeep pickup has three different sizes of NPT.
