Wisdom of crowds 1: "big box" vs "modules"

39x20 or 780sf for basically your automotive tools and a hoist? Seems like that could easily be done in 20x20 with a hoist in the middle and tools in a big "U" around the outside. A 160sf pantry closet? It seems like you could easily go down that list and probably get your 4000sf building to...

Forgot to turn the torque down to zero on torque wrench: calibration out of whack?

15 is pretty nominal. If you had used it to torque wheels at 80ft-lbs and left it for a few years I would have it calibrated but I think you are likely over thinking this. -Mark

2 part question about a new garage

You could also do the concrete work for both at the same time and pour the pad, then do the actual building afterwards. A bit more money but less than doing the whole thing and you have the convenience of all concrete being done and knowing it will look the same, age the same, etc. -Mark

    Lets see your workbench

Mine is intentionally not very deep as I have a very small double car garage so am trying to maximize space at all time. The "narrow" side (over the toolboxes) is 22" deep and the "deep" side (under the cabinets) is 26" deep. 22" is great for what I wanted, essentially a "prep" area so I have...

    Lets see your workbench

Version "2.0" of my workbench after removing the wheels off the boxes and building a 2x4 frame for the toolbox side, plus 2x 5/8" top sheets glued and screwed: Version 3.0 when money permits will be a stainless top over the plywood. -Mark

    Above 1200 Sq/FT Ford garage - 40X60X20

I am surprised there are no requirements at all around out buildings - I am not totally surprised your neighbors are unhappy, that is a very big "utility" building in direct eyeshot of a lot of folks. Nonetheless, should be awesome garage space - I'm very jealous! -Mark

I need your ideas! 22x22x8 2-Car Garage Open Layout

My garage is a 20x20 (actually just under) and we have similar goals. For me, my goal is to be able to park 2 cars in the winter time and then move one car outside to give me room to work on one car at a time. That's my 3D model of the layout. The stairs on the right hand side really cut...

    International tool box

Understood, but that is not the Super Heavy Duty model referenced in this thread, that is one of their cheap made in china boxes. All this to say, very different product at very different pricepoint! -Mark

    International tool box

I had two SHD boxes shipped to me around Christmas time (after they declared bankruptcy) through Home Depot Canada and they were super well packed and no deficiencies noted - just one data point. -Mark

    International tool box

Let's not repeat things on the internet that you don't know are true - that's how rumours get started. The International SHD series does NOT use metal screws to hold its casters on - it uses 4x M8 bolts per caster. Here is a photo of mine from when I received it. To the original poster...

My First Garage - 20x20 Attached in Vancouver, Canada

Honestly - I wasn't going to, and started bolting stuff to the wall, and now I wish I had given it more thought. I am going to see if the previous owner left me any matching paint and I might just do a few sections such as next to my work bench where the previous brackets ripped off paint. -Mark

My First Garage - 20x20 Attached in Vancouver, Canada

I've definitely been delinquent in updating this thread, but have been working on a few projects over the past while. As I showed in the initial render - my goal was to take my toolboxes off their wheels and build the work bench into an "L" shape to expand my work area. I lagged a 2x4 to the...

    Help Building a New Shop

This seems like a detail that is likely set out by your local building code - you should review that and start from there. There is no "need" to have drywall inside your garage from an insulation perspective, OSB is just as viable, but your local code is what you need to be on side with. -Mark

Mfatuation's 2-Car BMW Mpower Garage Build

I went to the link for the vinyl - unfortunately they don't have any of the same colors anymore! Too bad, it looks great and I'd love to have it on my garage wall. -Mark

    Fellow Canadians

Not even close. I went through this recently - I wanted to buy some new strong tool chests and didn't want to spend Snap On money. There is nothing available from Canadian Home Depot or Canadian Tire that is the same gauge of steel and sturdiness of construction as the HF. I ended up getting...

Change of plan, I am no longer willing to pay $7500 but instead $4501.33 plus shipping :D -Mark

    Snap-on tool set used value

For what it’s worth, I would write a check for $7500 easily if you were in WA. -Mark

    Snap-on tool set used value

If this is the set: https://store.snapon.com/US-Set-5-Complete-US-Set-5-P641842.aspx That is badass. The condition matters, but in like new condition, I think you'd get $5k for the toolbox alone and probably $10k for the tools if you sold them in small lots over time. -Mark

    Absolute Best Garage Cabinet System?

I would echo that if the criteria is truly "I want to spend unlimited money for the best available product" I would be looking at Lista. With that said, if the criteria is "I want the absolute best product for my home garage that would be a high level of quality and would never disappoint or...

Seeking advice on a tool/tool cabinet purchase in Iceland

I have read other Europeans who describe the European-market Snap On toolboxes as being made in Asia when the North American ones are made in the USA. They are not priced cheaper to justify this practice and I personally would not be paying Snap On prices for a made in China box... -Mark
