    Tinker, Tailor ....

In the back yard were a couple of slightly overgrown weeds. Both right where I want to put my new shop. No problem. How awesome are those stump grinders. Took him less than an hour to unload the machine, do three big stumps, plus a couple of smaller ones, load it back up and hit me...

    Tinker, Tailor ....

I can hardly believe that I've been a member here for over 7 years and amassed the grand total of 36 posts. But that's the price you pay after a divorce, rebuilding your life and possessions, which include a garage. Finally, a few months ago we (Mark II and I) managed to buy a house...

eliminating orange peel in paint: is it the gun or me?

I paint cars for a living and have my own shop. Orange peel comes from a variety of things but low or insufficient air, gun too far away from the panel and incorrect gun settings are the primary causes. Let's look at some of these in more detail: Air. HVLP guns are air hogs. They use 30-50%...

Need to identify these socket organisers

Ha!! Ebay only archives for 3 years, so no luck there, but your post did prompt me to search through old emails and I found one from Paypal confirming my purchase back in 2012. So, thank you, I've found them and ordered some more. Two full sets actually, which is possibly double what I need...

Need to identify these socket organisers

Yes, thanks, they do. I should have mentioned that Socketmat were the nearest thing that I'd found. The big difference with Socketmat is the spacing which is much wider compared to the ones I have, where spacing reduces for the smaller sockets.

Need to identify these socket organisers

Some years ago I bought some socket organisers that have worked really well for me. Even bought some extras but as the collection grows....well, now I need some more. Searched high and low but can't even find a picture of the same system and none of the usual places seem to have them. Can't...

    The Sidchrome thread

No Australian toobox is complete without at least some Sidchrome. They are very similar to the SP Motorsport in overall size and shape and come in sizes that the SP don't. Some older rings and flare nut spanners that don't open up. I'm not a huge fan of Sidchrome ratchets - find them a bit...

Proper method for priming painting with rattle cans?

Hmmm. OP, when the paint chips off, does it chip leaving bare metal or primer still on the piece? This will tell you where the bond problem is. Chipping usually indicates a bond problem or paint that is way too thick. In my shop (auto paint) we clean bare metal with wax & grease remover and let...

Why are American's tool boxes so big?

Not just this post, but all the others that blame SAE and Metric and seem to think that the rest of the world gets by on just one standard. Wrong, fellas. We've been officially metric for many years but I still need a full set of SAE. For some unknown reason until just recently you couldn't...

What an Australian Tool Collector might have in his toolbox

Yeah, Sears do some dumb things. I ordered a few things once and it all turned up in 4 different boxes. Best one though was this, box and complete contents:

What an Australian Tool Collector might have in his toolbox

The E sockets? Kincrome. I was impressed with what looked like quality and they have been. I have a paint repair shop so we come across those on body fittings fairly often. Great idea, eh? Just a flate plate with a handle on one end and socket rails riveted on. I found them first at a stall at...

What an Australian Tool Collector might have in his toolbox

Nice kit there, jedi. I see you've already ordered but you'll be happy with the SP Tools. The Motorsport range I find better than the standard spanners - longer and anti-slip. I also have a selection of SP sockets with which I'm also very happy. Couple of pics (notice the smattering of...

    Let's see your toolbox.

So, been on here a while and visit often but don't post much. A few months ago I had the chance to pick up and extra toolbox to relieve the strain on the old (well, not that old) one. The Christmas break gave me the chance to do some cleaning and re-organising. I know how you blokes love...

    sidchrome vs kincrome

Sidchrome are still good, not as good as they used to be, but a bit overpriced, IMHO. Kincrome are not bad for the price. Spanners and sockets are ok, some other things like pliers are a bit ordinary. They are a good step below Sidchrome though. That said, haven't heard of too many failures. I...

    Hello from Brisbane

Welcome Richard. What you choose for your benchtop depends on what kind of work you think you'll be doing on it. I have a couple of benches with MDF tops, one with pineboard and two are steel. All are used for different purposes so work well for their intended applications so I keep anything...

    School me on paint guns

This is such a minefield because there are so many variations. Probably best to decide whether you want HVLP or the older high pressure guns. HVLP needs a bigger compressor to deliver the air volume needed. True HVLP guns are maybe 50% more expensive than HP and LVLP is newer technology so...

Whats the most dis-liked tool in your shop ?

Stanley, actually. Yeah, scary. Notice how it was aimed out the door and there was no way I was going anywhere near that end! Made an adaptor for the press after this and these things went in the scrap metal bin.
