    Dealership workbench almost done

In the center rear of the tabletop is not a power cord, but a retracting air hose with rollers. The hose has the cabinet company's name embedded in it. The top material is some sort of wood (I think) composite in two layers. Needless to say is was covered in grease, oil and grime. Scraped as...

    Dealership workbench almost done

As promised, some inside and detail photos are ready to post. This cabinet was made by Natkin, but those made by Alemite were more popular and the majority of those remaining out there. Behind the center doors is a integral shelf a little over half way up. I am replacing my roll around tool...

Although it would be extra kool, no roll down garage door cover for the middle section. Some do but not this one. Will post some photos of the inside tomorrow.

    Dealership workbench almost done

Several years ago I picked up a Dealership workbench from an ad on Craig's list. Posted some photos on here. Put it up on furniture dollies and shuffled it in and out of my way for several years. About a year ago one of my friends had some credit built up with a local media blaster. He gave...

Picked up an old Alemite Workbench

Boy that is in great shape, you should have no trouble selling it if you decide not to keep it. I have a similar bench that is in the process of being restored. Painter was putting color on my cabinets yesterday. Great find.

    Shop wipes from Dollar Tree

A friend dropped a case of these by my shop the first of the week. (I let him have the floor out of a total I am parting out). They do a great job getting dirt and grease off my hands. Would recommend them at a buck a pack. The pack reseals and keeps the towels moist.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

This is one of those chain-of-events things we all get into from time to time. Finally getting around to restoring my vintage mechanic's bench. It has been blown apart, all the sheetmetal media blasted, and primed and is at the painter's. It will go in the annex building with the lift. The tool...

Latest fab. project - downhill racer

Great work and you have done a lot of problem solving thus far. Compounding the oversteering problem is that having the king pin running parallel to he plane of the wheel causes a lot of tire scrub when he steers. Ideal would be to have a line extended thru the king pin intersect the patch...

Where can I find this speed rachet?

Was at a friends shop yesterday when he pulled out this "speed rachet" to remove a sparkplug. He said it came from a friend that got it from a grandfather . . . might be from the '30s. Attached is a photo (if I did it right) Says Craftsman. I would like to purchase one if I can find it . . ...

    Architectural question

The number and placement of the doors kind of depends on how you are going to use the space. My main building is 160' x 35' with only two external garage doors, one 8 x 7 and another 9 x 7. I use the front 1/4 for my shop and the rest is for storage of finished cars, project cars and parts...

    Learning the new tool box

There are magnetic sheets available that you can print on with your computer printer. Works pretty well unless you have a wooden tool box. If you are using the box alot and still having trouble finding tools, maybe it is a sign you need to rearrange your drawers . . . put the labels on the...

Do you know your Cylinder Index?

I am 61 so this is tough . . . 214 cylinders in assembled engines . . . mostly all air cooled 6 cylinders most of them run.

Latest fab. project - downhill racer

My suggestion on the body would be to make it out of fabric, like the early airplanes. Find the right fabric and you can glue it to your existing frame, heat it and dope it to shrink it tight then paint it. If you want a more rounded shape you can create the framework out of 1/4 or 3/8 tubing...

    50's Dealership workbench purchased

Thanks for all the comments. I am happy with my purchase. It should arrive at my shop Friday evening. Immediate plans are a good scrubbing and treating the rust, the long-term plan is to restore it. Most of you may not understand this, but I have a couple of other projects that I should get...

    50's Dealership workbench purchased

Dang Craig's list . . . Saw this dealership mechanics workbench for sale yesterday and thought if would fit well in my shop. It will take a lot of restoration but it is very complete and the trim is in great shape. It even has a sticker with the company name on the retracting air hose. A...
