    Another cold air return question

Should the cold air return venting be sealed? In other words, is it OK if the cold air return has an opening in the small room where the furnace is? I'm thinking that's not good, as it keeps air from actually "returning" from the other parts of the house. Ours is setup that way, and I'm...

LM3800 problem: Openers sometimes open wrong door!

This just started in the last few weeks, but has now happened twice to me and twice to my wife: We have two LM3800's and a regular Liftmaster. The three button remotes and my wife's Homelink remote are programmed to open each of the three doors. Four times now, though, when we're either opening...

How do you add make-up water to your radiant heat system?

Or do you? I'm about to fill our garage/driveway snowmelt system, which is not connected to any source of water. I'm being asked by folks I'm hiring to finish a few details how I plan to add water and antifreeze to the system. Frankly, I don't. Should I? If so, how? Caleffi will happily sell...

Liftmaster 3800 remote light staying on

I installed 2 Liftmaster 3800's a few weeks ago, but the remote light on one of them will often stay on indefinitely. The only way to turn it off is to cut power to the opener and light for a few seconds. Any idea why, or what's wrong? I'm using the motion detector feature, which is really...

Plumbing valves OK for air line drain valves?

My plumber friend who's helping me with my air system installed what look like garden hose faucets on the drain legs. Is there any reason not to do that? They are actually kind of handy, but I don't know if they'll stand up to the pressure. Do any of you know? Thanks, Mark

Any RFI issues with GEB10IS ballasts

I hope I'm not getting to be known as the "RFI guy" on here... :bounce: I'm about to order $1000 worth of lights, and thought I'd check one more time: Do any of you with RFI interference from your T8 lights have GEB10IS ballasts in them? Do any of you have lights with these ballasts and *NO*...

Calling all Lithonia T8 light owners

Please take a look at the post I made this morning in the T8 RFI Experience Poll thread. If you'll post up your ballast part number and whether or not you're experiencing RFI, I'll take that info to Lithonia and see if they have a fix/recommendation. Thanks!! Mark

What do you use to hold tools, parts, and oil change pans under your lift?

My garage is nearing completion, and every vehicle we own needs maintenance. As I'm thinking through actually using the lift, though, I'm wondering what sort of rolling tray I can use to hold tools, parts and my oil drain pan. What do you guys use? Mark

    Do I need these braces?

Either to pass final frame, or for real-world structural rigidity? Here's what I'm asking about: Do the diagonal braces actually do anything after the building is up? I'm not too concerned about the front one, but that back one is really going to foul up the attic space. Can I take it, and...

Based on responses in another thread, I thought a little poll might be in order. Please let us know what kind (length, bulb count, brand and source) of T8 fixtures you have.

Insulating a mechanical room for sound suppression

I've walled off a 7x11' room to house my compressor, lift pump and boiler, as well as for bike storage. The walls are 2x6, and I'm putting 7/16" OSB and 5/8" drywall on both sides. Being a bit of a freak about noise, I was thinking of using 8 or 10" of fiberglass insulation stuffed into the 2x6...

    T8 vs T12, a few simple questions

With apologies to the late Dr. **** Treadway, I'm vacillating on the precipice of indecision. I've read all there is to read on here, and am more confused than ever. My situation: I'm about to light a 32x34 garage (915sf internal, after subtracting a 77sf utility room. Walls are 9'6", with a...

How do I move a 600+lb compressor off a pallet... by myself?

I'm about to order an Eaton compressor that weighs 630lbs. Assuming, for the moment, that I can borrow a pallet jack and get the pallet from the street into the garage, how do I go about getting the compressor off the pallet? I'm a scrawny 50yo, with no tools for this sort of thing. :bounce: I...

    QUICK!!! Framing/code question

I'm building a compressor room in my new garage today and have a quick question. Keep in mind that nothing is yet drywalled or insulated, just framed out on the inside. My question: When butting a non-weight bearing wall up against a weight bearing wall, but between 2 of the 16"oc studs, what...

Help me design my garage lighting

My marathon garage build is wrapping up, and I need to design the lighting. I downloaded the Visual lighting software, but it seems that one has to have at least some clue what they are doing to get good results with it. Imagine that... :bounce: So, I'm asking for help, please... Here's a...

What should I use to fill these concrete gaps?

I'm not sure how clearly the photo shows them, but I've got gaps behind my 2" insulation in the concrete stem walls I need to fill. What's the best filler for something like this? Great Stuff polyurethane (the stuff in the can)? Self-leveling polyurethane like I'll use for filling the saw cuts...

    Genie garage doors?

I got a bid from Ankmar - now DH Pace - for a couple of doors yesterday, and the guy said they are really Genie doors. I didn't know Genie made doors, but he said many of the "branded" doors around are Genies. Anyone know if this is true, and if they are worth anything? The samples I saw looked...

    Explosion proof conduit question

The installation manual for my Rotary in-ground lift specifies "explosion proof conduit, per code" be used between the control box and the in-ground lift mechanism, but the installation company said to just use plain ol' PVC. My question: 1) What is "explosion proof conduit"? Googling was...

Should I tie my slab to the stem walls?

We're about to pour our 31x33 6" floor, and I'm wondering if I should have them tie it to the stem walls with rebar? I'd do this because: 1) I've got an in-ground lift, and don't want the slab to move 2) I'll have radiant heat, and don't want the slab to move 3) I'll have a stick-built wall...
