Tile guys: Exactly what tile did you use?

We've got enough, "Is tile the right answer for me?" threads, so let's not go there. If you did use ceramic or porcelain tile, exactly what tile did you use? I'm asking because I've pretty much decided to go this way, and have seen lots of tile that are one shade or another of "tan". I haven't...

Once in awhile you get to work on something fun

My neighbor owns a car I lusted after badly in my 20's, and needed to look for an oil leak. Mark

    Will VCT "cover" these?

Will VCT cover or mask these things: Birdbaths - You know, those little places that are slightly lower on a hand troweled floor, and where water stands? Assuming they are smaller/narrower than a tile, will the glue "fill these in", and cause the resulting floor to be flatter? Cut stress relief...

Help me fix a floor drainage problem

I hoping to VCT+epoxy my floor before winter, but I need to fix a drainage problem first. Here's what's happening: The lowest part of the floor is in front of the man door. When a snowy car is parked in the garage - which stays about 50* - all the water ends up in front of this door, and it...

    Taking great garage/mechanic photos

Like many, when I'm working on something - usually a vehicle - I find photos I find on the web invaluable. Good ones can be difficult to take, though, so let's talk about tips and tricks we use to make these photos better and more useful. I'll start, though I'm certainly no expert. Don't Use...

    Polyurethane directly on VCT?

Is there a polyurethane coating that will adhere directly to VCT? If so, can some sort of "grippy stuff" be added to it to improve traction when wet? I've got nearly 1500sf to do and, while I love the idea of using Fred's 1109 and then his polyurethane, that would completely blow the budget. Mark

What color VCT did you use?

Would you use it again? I'm not a big checkerboard guy, so I'm thinking of solid Pewter (Armstrong 51908) with a couple of Classic Black (51910) "driving lanes" leading to the in-ground lift. (It's offset from the door a bit, and I thought lanes would make it easier to line a vehicle up...

    School me on my compressor

I bought a 5hp, 80g Eaton a couple of years ago, and it's been fine. The only thing I don't like about it is that it came with a 150psi pop-off valve, even though it claims to be a "175psi" compressor, and the tank working pressure is 200psi. I replaced the pop-off with a 200psi one tonight...

Epoxy over VCT on a floor with radiant heat?

Any particular reason why this wouldn't work? Would the tiles stay down OK? Any decrease in heating efficiency? I need to do something with my floor this seems like the best solution, but I don't want to foul up my radiant heating system, or foul up the floor because of it. Mark

Is there a reasonable way to raise a garage floor 1/2"?

I'm really pleased with the garage we built a couple of years ago, but the only mistakes I'd like to correct are, literally, in concrete. I've got a roughly 30x32' flat floor and I'd like to raise the rear (away from the garage doors) 24' up 1/2", then slope the front 6' down to where it is...

What can I do to make my driveway last?

I had a new concrete driveway placed a year and a half ago, when the garage was done. One section is insulated with 2" Dow Hiload40, and heated for snowmelt purposes. Another new section isn't heated, and the third section is from the existing driveway. All are 4" thick, with rebar on 2'...

    Proper compressor pop-off valve setting?

I've got an 80g Eaton 2-stage compressor that's "rated" for 175psi. I assume that means I ought not pressurize the tank to greater than 175psi, right? I figured I'd set the pressure switch to fill to 165psi, or so, and to start the motor at 120psi, where I have my regulator set. Well, the...

Need a new garage door, but the floor isn't level

I visited my octogenarian parents over the holidays, and found that they desperately need a new garage door to replace the 45 year old wooden one they have. Their garage floor has settled on both edges, though, so the edges are an inch or inch and a half lower than the center. My dad put wooden...

Filling/sealing cracks in a concrete floor

My brother's garage floor was placed over steel beams so that his basement workshop is beneath the garage. The concrete has cracked over the years, though, enough so that melting snow from the cars is now leaking all the way through the garage floor and is dripping into his workshop. The cracks...

For those of you with multiple Liftmaster garage door openers

Do your remotes ever open the wrong door? I have two 3800's and a slightly older ceiling mount opener. I've got our 3-button remotes and the Homelink in my wife's car programmed with a button assigned to each door. Once in awhile you'll press a button, and the wrong door will activate. The...

Does left over PEX have any value?

I ended up with three boxes of left over 1/2" and 3/4" PEX from our heating project. I'd guess the longest piece is 80', or so, and most are probably 6-15' in length. Does this stuff have any value, or should I just pitch it? (This is NOT an ad. If I sell it, I'll put on the Craigslist...

OK to fix a backwards concentric vent this way?

I had a contractor install the concentric vent for my boiler last spring, as I had no experience doing roofing work. He did a nice job on that part. However, he installed the vent backwards, which I noticed this week when I fired up the boiler and saw steam coming out the intake. These things...

My radiant heat system is full of foam :-(

I hired a local heating company to fill my garage heat and snowmelt system, and now it's full of foam. When the guy left today it was at 12psi and I was running the system to mix everything and let it bleed out the air that was obviously still in it. Within an hour the boiler had quit with a low...

How do you keep dust off and out of your garage TV?

How do you keep dust, grinding sparks, and all the other junk that floats around a garage off the screen and out of the TV innards? I splurged a bit and bought a low-end LCD TV for the garage, and I'm hanging it today. It'll be up in a corner, mounted near the 9 1/2' ceiling. I thought about...

New Gladiator rolling cabinet arrived bent

I needed a new workbench and more storage, so I ordered the Gladiator 6' bench and a couple of the under-bench storage modules from Sears, at no small cost, even though it was all on sale. When I opened the first one last night, the side was creased and the caster mounts were bent badly, even...
