I'm sure people put light bulbs in their clothes drawers to keep the flags printed on their tee-shirts illuminated.

Adding a rudder to my kayak

We have one on the ancient Klepper kayak my dad bought circa 1966... it helps as you mention in cross winds. The Kleppers are directionally quite stable w/ long keels, and the rudder definitely makes turning easier and less of an impact on one's paddling rythem. If you're boating in salt water...

need help identifying these thread dies

This post from Practical Machinist discusses these obsolete sizes; my references go back to the late 50s but these sizes appear older than that.... https://www.practicalmachinist.com/forum/threads/us-machine-screw-threads.355403/ Here's a copy of screw sizes from...

How come common metric sets only go to 19mm but common sae sets run to 1” which would be 25mm?

A 5/8"-11 grade 5 bolt is often torqued to 150 ft-lbs, which is the limit for 3/8" drive ratchets. 1/2" bolts (3/4" nuts & bolt heads) are really the working limit for 3/8" drive tools. Above that, go to 1/2" drive.

Looking for a quality benchtop mill

I used a Rong-Fu for many years (round column) with good success. If you can level it, a laser pointer mounted to the head that shines across the room on a vertical line makes it pretty easy to keep things lined up when raising the head. Failing that, raising it less than the quill travel makes...

    Torque wrench storage settings

It's a function of time and temperature.... left set to a high value, stored at high temperatures for months or years you'll have calibration issues. Left set at oom temp for a few weeks - don't worry about it, just remember to reduce the setting next time.

    Shop Vac suggestions

The iVac vacuum switch implements this for any shop vac, and supports using a separate circuit for the vacuum, distinct from the tool. https://www.rockler.com/ivac-dust-collector-switch-box?zCountry=US&promo=shopping

Single Axle Car Hauler, anyone made one before?

Yup... I have four dual axle trailers (boat, box, equipment and Airstream with torsion axles). Note that the bending forces on the axle are no different than those caused by cornering forces at the limit of adhesion, except that they're the tires fighting each other rather than centripetal...

Single Axle Car Hauler, anyone made one before?

This would be a woefully weak axle.... the forces on the axle are limited to those which the tires can generate, and those are with the tires working against each other.

    Sears sabre saw parts

I have (still) the Sears Best version in the catalog page above; the blade clamp broke in 1984 when I was cutting a hole in a roof (through plywood and asphalt shingles ) to install a attic ventilator. I'm still going to make a die filer from it, really I am.

    Basket for tractor

I had some time to add scabbards for the hedge trimmer and chainsaw along with some "Quick Fist" clamps to hold a shovel. The scabbards are getting primed and painted this weekend while I'm not busy w/ other projects. I'm still not sure how to hold the peavy as it's a bit long to carry in the...

    Running 250psi- what piping system?

Sil-Phos is a very useful self-fluxing brazing alloy for copper; it's widely used for refrigeration, and is much cheaper and easier to use for pure copper than high silver alloys. If you go with black iron pipe, steel hydraulic fittings are less expensive than class 300 fittings.

Milwaukee M12 Cut Off Tool - Sheet Metal Frustration

I (as is normal at least once a week) mirror imaged three hinges for the doors on my shop. I was pleasantly surprised when a 1/16" cut-off wheel in my M18 Fuel grinder quickly cut through the 3/8"x3" plates.

    Show your new tool arrivals

I was on the mainland yesterday (or, as we're wont to say on this island, "I went to America yesterday") to pick up our '96 F250, which is sporting a new heavy duty rebuilt transmission after spending an expensive week at the transmission spa. I had a bit of extra time, so I swung by HF to take...

    Basket for tractor

I have an ammo box on the left fender; I keep the 15' chain and choker setup there for when I'm dealing with trees. This loader was actually intended for a B7100; I made a new subframe and custom front drive adapter to use it on this tractor. I bought it from a friend; he thought the...
