    Question for all you woodworkers

I need something that will keep the planks from separating. Otherwise I will end up with gaps between the boards and dirt inside them.

    Question for all you woodworkers

I have a radiant floor concrete slab in my house that I want to cover with some nice hickory hardwood that I am going to saw from my own trees. Being that the floor is poured concrete with radiant tubes in it I do not have any way to fasten the planks to the floor. I don't think glue is an...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

I finally got the damn bearing changed. I tried the map gas torch. That got old fast. So I put a puller on the bearing and tightened it up as much as I could. Still no luck. I then cranked the heat up on my welder and welded 3 long beads on the inner part of the bearing. Still would not budge...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

The nut came off just fine. My M18 1/2" impact made short work of that. can't get the splined axle to let go.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Worked on replacing both front wheel bearings on the 05 grand cherokee. Drivers side was 20 minute cake job. Passenger side still fighting me after 2 days lots of soaking with PB, plenty of air hammer and some BFH. Still refuses to budge. Just can't seam to get the axle to move. I am thinking...

    Optimal work bench depth?

I have 2 different benches in my shop. one I think is 24" deep. and the other I think is 18 or 20. I like the shallower bench on the one wall because that is where I put my pegboard and have all my sockets and wrenches hanging on the wall. When that was 24" I had a hard time reaching the higher...

    The repurposing thread

How's the jack work on its side like that? How often do you have to reset it? Looks like you have almost enough stroke to do a 90 degree bend?

Ideas for bulding a 32x60 into a hill? Has anyone done this?

My bad on the truss direction. This project does look very doable. It will definintely not be cheap though.

Ideas for bulding a 32x60 into a hill? Has anyone done this?

Unfortunately for him the trusses will be running the opposite direction. I still think it can be done though. Just have to be creative.

Ideas for bulding a 32x60 into a hill? Has anyone done this?

I have not seen any designs for this but with the new way everyone is laying out roof structures I can see this working very well. It used to be trusses were placed at 24" o.c. then sheathing was added over the top and shingles. Now with new building materials (steel roofing) it seems trusses...

How did you decide door location in your shop?

I have been considering a door on all 4 sides of my barn. Not sure whether I do man doors or overhead doors. I also am planning to put a window over the top of the overhead doors for the natural light and ventilation. I have been in to many shops where there is no cross ventilation. Sure makes...

Ideas for bulding a 32x60 into a hill? Has anyone done this?

With my experience I have found trying to mate to an existing roof line is nothing but a potential leak hazard and a royal PITA. you would be better off with a higher roof on the new portion. Don't get me wrong. You can do it. But it typically requires quite a bit of work removing and...

How did you decide door location in your shop?

That has been my observation as well. It really make me wonder if anybody thought about that before they did it. Of course it may just be a garage to them and not need storage space or benches or toolboxes. But in a working shop I totally agree with the 6'. My latest design puts my lift 4' from...

How did you decide door location in your shop?

This question is entirely posed out of curiosity. I see many shops that confuse me when it comes to door locations. Most of the shops that confuse me are the ones that have a nice long wall and then the overhead door is right in the middle of it. I can't think of to many times I would actually...

Ideas for bulding a 32x60 into a hill? Has anyone done this?

Make sure the second floor ceiling height is over 6'. I am 6' tall my dad made his loft 5'. We both hate going up there. I would recommend no less than 7' but since it will be a storage area you don't need a super high ceiling. Also make sure you think about the door when designing it. sliding...

LED shop lights - Bulbs or integrated

I had piles of 4' fluorescent fixtures laying around. Finally just decided to buy led replacement tubes that are power one end and eliminated the ballast. I couldn't be happier. I did also rig some lights together using 18 gage wire and terminals. They are just hanging from the garage ceiling...

Ideas for bulding a 32x60 into a hill? Has anyone done this?

a series of floor drains may make more sense if you are worried about it. Draining back out the door would work but I would make the grade such that water would not run down the drive path to get in. especially since that drive path should go up into the shop.
