    Sorry Snap On.

HOLY MACKEREL!!!! What does that impact do that causes it to cost that much?

Do brand new Snap-On sockets come coated in oil?

My impacts cam with an oily film and I got them off the truck in one instance and sealed in a couple of other packs.

    Best 1/2 ratchet?

It only looks attractive. There’s a whole other pricing for SO here for us - don’t believe the SO site. I got a quote for C$ 6,441 tax in for a Classic 76 - comes to about USD5000 at today’s rate. Not sure what it costs for you, but I assure you we aren’t known for sweet deals in much here.

    Favorite low-tooth ratchet

So I assume that the low-tooth-count affairs are more durable? I’ve used cheater bars before I bought my FLLF80 but it does such an awesome job of tearing up sockets with just my body weight that I don’t think a cheater should be used. Would you say then that they are more for industrial and not...

    Best 1/2 ratchet?

I feel you pain! There are so many good deals south of the border, but shipping and import kills the value.

    Free tools

The best free (and worst) tool for me was the Snap On SDD204 pocket screwdriver - it was the start of an addiction / shopping spree. I didn’t think a day goes by when I don’t use it.

    Favorite low-tooth ratchet

Sorry for the question- but is there a reason where a low tooth-count rathchet is better than a 84T / Dual 80 / Eighty8 variety? I have finer ones like 120xp and Cobra 160 to overcome clearance issues. Just wondering what the application for 36-tooth ratchets would be please?

    Best 1/2 ratchet?

Parrothead is correct. Your reference to mastercraft means you are Canadian and 1/2” Snap-on is $200. I own the GW 1/2 120xp and it is a fine ratchet but Apex are less tan stellar to deal with when you need a warranty (and you will). Stay away from the US brands as getting the item serviced will...

    Pesky Toyota wheel nuts

Thanks for the pointers on the flip socket. Both trucks come by on Fridays, so I will inquire. The lug nuts are $2 apiece, but you will be surprised how many customers choose to not replace them.

    Pesky Toyota wheel nuts

They are all officially 21mm affairs - there is some sort of chrome cap that gets distorted over time and makes nut slightly smaller than a 22mm. Using a 22 further compounds the distortion and eventually we need to replace the whole set.

    Pesky Toyota wheel nuts

Tire season will soon be upon us and I am dreading those when nuts - a 21mm doesn't fit the all and a 22 had a bit too much play. Anyone have a recommendation for what size / brand to use please? Thanks!

it's useful to carry a mostly complete set of tools in your car

I don't keep any real tools to speak of in my car - there aren't many situations where CAA / Honda Roadside will not suffice. I generally dislike working on my car outside the shop, so would rather have it towed back.

What's your favorite "off" brands for tools.

Mastercraft - they have some had decent stuff and some of it is Gearwrench. I don't think there are many techs in Canada who don't own some. Pittsburgh Pro - those sockets got me by when I didn't have / know better. I love the 1/2 impacts.

Brands and items worth buying in Toronto?

I remember when Terry from Tech Pro used to come around in a Sprinter van - never been able to catch the store open. I’m kinda disappointed that it’s a 5 minute stop... Variety Tool is what I imagine an old school hardware store would be like with a sketchy vibe. He does sell stuff that not...

Brands and items worth buying in Toronto?

Tech-Pro tools at Warden and Ellesmere has some more unusual stuff. Same with Variety tools in the basement of Sheridan Mall @ Wilson. They had e-torx and triple-square before it was widely available, so you get the picture. BUT, expect plenty of import tools.

Tool brands that are hard to get

Wow! I can almost understand that at some level - it may not be the 2018 version of doing business but I see a rationale. I thought you got bounced out of the tool truck... I have heard of a tool truck guy who wouldn’t sell to non-pro users...

    The worst ratchet ever...

Thanks for all the replies - it is not my intention to bash on a brand or the opinions of an individual. I am just trying to get a point of reference for what a “bad” ratchet is because I was surprised that something I thought works adequately was deemed to be the worst. There are so many...

Tool brands that are hard to get

Cornwell will not sell you tools? Isn’t that the whole point of being a tool company - the exchange of shiny pieces of metal (and paper) for other shiny pieces of metal?

    The worst ratchet ever...

I recently watched a YouTube video titled “The Worst Ratchet Ever” where the premise was that the HF long handle flex head is terrible. So terrible that it earns that title. Thing is I have purchased one and it wasn’t bad. My colleague liked it so much I gave it to him and he uses it every day...
