    Very dissapointed with Craftsman sockets

Have you returned the set of sockets yet? :) Danaher's Craftsman/Kobalt quality has been going down, but so have their prices. They're building a product to a lower price point these days. I bought the Kobalt 40 piece 3/8" ratchet set at Lowe's for $20 last week. The chrome inside the...

    Stupid Good Deal

I picked up the 3/8" set today. As others have said, I would have preferred 6 point and the insides of the sockets are a little rough. But for 20 bucks it's an amazing deal. I've replaced the metric shallow sockets with my 6 point Craftsman easy read sockets and I'll switch out the ratchet at...

    The Gimmick Tool Thread

Good grief, I had forgotten all about those. Somebody would haul one of these to a flea market for 10 cents? Anybody else fall for the Coleman Cold Heat? What a POS that was. Toward the end of my grandfather's life, it got progressively harder to find birthday/Christmas/Father's Day gifts for...

    paying off tools

Interesting. I've never worked flat $ either, so the idea is a little foreign to me. It seems like one of the few jobs where you're someone's employee but you bear the expense of almost every item required to do your job. It's like someone shows up for their first day at a desk job and...

Hiding or relocating sprinkler system controller?

Hi all, I'd like to do a whole wall of slatwall on one side of the garage and my sprinkler system timer resides right in the middle of the wall. I don't have any photos now, but I think it's kind of typical: mounted around waist height, dedicated power outlet. I'm wondering if I can move it...

    Garage Trash Can

That's a really great idea! When I was a kid my grandfather used a civil defense water drum from the bomb shelter under the post office where he worked. I'm guessing it had leaked and he brought it home. Had really cool graphics on it.

    Vinegar for rust awesome!

Re: Vinager for rust awesome! I'm with you on the smell of vinegar. I think it's one of those rare things where you're either wired to like the smell or it makes you gag. It reminds me of when my grandparents used to clean the coffeepot when I was a kid and if you don't like the smell of...

    Olympic Brand paint

I picked up two 5 gallon pails for $6.24 a piece today. :)

All tool in the shop, or box up spares etc and pack away?

Dang, what a great idea. I'm running into the problem of what to do with the duplicate "good but not as good" tools as I upgrade. And I have extra toolboxes too. I'm building an "upstairs" kit now!

    Olympic Brand paint

Five gallons of primer for $17? Get it! Have them tint it to whatever color you're using and do all but the top coat in primer. You've just saved a buttload on paint.

Snap On Brings Back Hard Handles From The Dead

Wow. I need to get into the imported acetate screwdriver handle business.

    Any good cabinet deals around?

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a set of cabinets from Ikea. What kind of coupons did you use?

When do you use a wrench over a socket/ratchet.

Wrenches are sometimes easier to deal with than ratchets when the task is very simple. For example, removing/replacing an oil drain plug feels like a wrench task more than a ratchet task. When you're turning the fastener maybe 1/4 inch with the wrench and the rest is by hand, a ratchet is...

    Any good cabinet deals around?

Do you have an Ikea near you? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/kitchen/12315/ Fourteen feet worth of anything is going to cost a mint unless you DIY or luck out with Craigslist or an auction.

Yep, happens all the time. The crazy thing here is that they're licensing to companies that make terrible products in their own category! If you're a tool company and you're licensing to a company that makes tools, those are your tools. You might as well consider them your OEM. It's not like...

And it's a big reason why Taiwanese workers are a lot more likely to develop cancer from hexavalent chromium exposure. Just saying.

Let's build a value priced tool set.

+1 to the Wiha screwdrivers. The 3k series is probably the best bang for the buck out there. Ratchets: Craftsman raised panel or the equivalent Kobalt. They're coarse and ugly as all get-out, but they're a good value.
